  • Smart Maintenance: Instrument Development, Content Validation and an Empirical Pilot
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 40:4, s. 481-506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Scholars and practitioners within industrial maintenance management are focused on understanding antecedents, correlates and consequences of the concept of “Smart Maintenance”, which consists of the four dimensions data-driven decision-making, human capital resource, internal integration and external integration. In order to facilitate this understanding, valid and reliable empirical measures need to be developed. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a psychometric instrument that measures the four dimensions of Smart Maintenance. Design/methodology/approach: The results from two sequential empirical studies are presented, which include generating items to represent the constructs, assessment of content validity, as well as an empirical pilot test. With input from 50 industrial experts, a pool of 80 items that represent the constructs are generated. Thereafter, using data from 42 industrial and academic raters, the content validity of all items is assessed quantitatively. Finally, using data from 59 manufacturing plants, the dimensionality and factor structure of the instrument are tested. Findings: We demonstrate content validity and provide evidence of good model fit and psychometric properties for one-factor models with 8-11 items for each of the four constructs, as well as a combined 24-item four-factor model. Originality/value: We provide recommendations for scholarly use of the instrument in further theory-testing research, as well as its practical use to assess, benchmark and longitudinally evaluate Smart Maintenance within the manufacturing industry.

  • Total quality beyond North America A comparative analysis of the performance of European Excellence Award winners
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 33:1-2, s. 197-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to assess whether the implementation of a total quality management (TQM) approach positively affects the financial performance of European companies. This paper tests whether North American results showing the relative out-performance of companies that have successfully implemented TQM approaches are replicated in Europe. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanDesign/methodology/approach - This research uses the same methodology as the seminal work of Hendricks and Singhal. The winning of a Quality Award is used as a proxy for the sound implementation of TQM. Publicly available share price and accounting data is analysed over a ten year period. Changes in the performance of award winning companies relative to non-award winning companies are tested using a matched-pair comparison approach. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanFindings - The results confirm that, despite evident and marked differences in company structures and institutional environments between North America and Europe, stronger performance is again achieved by the TQM-oriented award winning companies. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanOriginality/value - There is little empirical research establishing the link between TQM and improved financial performance within Europe, with most existing studies presenting findings only based on perception data. The findings presented in this paper close some of the limitations of previous European studies and use rigorous research methods to estimate the financial and business impact of TQM on company performance in Europe. Furthermore, extending Hendricks and Singhals seminal study to include Europe, has been an objective of those in the European TQM practitioner community ever since the early results were published.

  • Developing integrated solution offerings for remote diagnostics : a comparative case study of two manufacturers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 29:5, s. 539-560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper analyzes two manufacturing firms entering condition based maintenance business reveals the complex nature of establishing integrated solutions. Existing literature on integrated solutions is contrasted critically against empirical findings. Design/methodology/approach – Descriptive, comparative case study focuses on solution offerings in two different companies. The data consist of 57 thematic interviews of both manufacturer and customer representatives and company documents. Findings – In integrated solutions, value is created incrementally through the customer-provider co-production process. Building integrated solutions business requires managing the interdependence of the solution components – both within the provider company and the offering, and between the provider and the client – to enable this collaborative process. Research limitations/implications – The case studies were first conducted separately and later compared. However, despite some minor differences in case methodologies, no problems were encountered in the comparative analysis of the data sets. Originality/value – The paper departs from the canons of earlier literature as it proposes a revised definition for integrated solution offerings; it emphasizes balanced amalgamation of multiple perspectives instead of just replacing the old ones; it questions the view of solutions development as a straight-forward implementation process; and it switches perspective from the manufacturer to the business of the client as the main system.

  • Measures vs actions : The Balanced Scorecard in Swedish Law Enforcement
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 23:12, s. 1475-1496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of organizational performance have overwhelmingly relied on evidence gathered from private sector firms. Nevertheless, the past several years have witnessed increasing interest in enhancing effectiveness and efficiency in the public sector, in turn generating considerable investment in the deployment of performance metrics in such settings. Though extant evidence provides many perceptive insights into the specifics of performance frameworks in public sector organizations, little is known about the measurement of organizational performance in police work. Our investigation drew upon the deployment of the balanced scorecard in Swedish Law Enforcement, an organization that long ago implemented the new paradigm of policing, which consisted of enhancing the quality of urban life on the mere making of arrests. Results from this investigation concur with other studies indicating that public sector organizations tend to assume a stakeholder perspective on performance measurement. In particular, Swedish Law Enforcement developed a set of measures of external success and internal performance that addressed present, past, and future time dimensions. Implementation of the balanced scorecard in police work, though, raised some problems. Our study details concern about the aggregation of non‐financial performance measures. More importantly, some crucial areas in the new concept of policing (such as community policing) were neglected by the system. Conversely, the system focused on monitoring some easy‐to‐measure indicators that provided a traditional view of police work while some crucial areas of policing were not measured. This focus ultimately lessened the operational potential of the balanced scorecard system. Our study also puts forward some suggestions for future research in this area.

  • On the road to digital servitization – The (dis)continuous interplay between business model and digital technology
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 41:5, s. 694-722
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The authors seek to understand the process of digital servitization as a shift of manufacturing companies from the provision of standard products and services to smart solutions. Specifically, the authors focus on changes in the business model (i.e. the value proposition, the value delivery system and the value capture mechanism) for digital servitization.Design/methodology/approach – The authors examine a Chinese air conditioner manufacturer, Gree, who became the global leader with their smart solutions. These solutions included performance-based contracts underpinned by artificial intelligence (AI)-powered air conditioners that automatically adjust to environmental changes and are capable of remote monitoring and servicing thanks to its Internet of things (IoT) technology.Findings – To successfully offer smart solution value propositions, a manufacturer needs an ecosystem value delivery system composed of suppliers, distributors, partners and customers. Once the ecosystem relationships are well aligned, the manufacturer gains value with multiple value capture mechanisms (i.e. efficiency, accountability, shared customer value and novelty). To arrive at this point, a manufacturer has to pass through different stages that are characterized by both discontinuous and continuous interplay between business models and digital technologies. At the beginning of each stage, new value propositions and value delivery systems are first discontinuously created and then enabled with digital technology. As a result, new value capture mechanisms are activated. Meanwhile, the elements of the existing business model are continuously improved.Research limitations/implications – By combining process-perspective and business-model lenses, the authors offer nuanced insights into how digital servitization unfolds.Practical implications – Executives can obtain insights into the business model elements, they need to change over the course of digital servitization and how to manage the process.Originality/value – A longitudinal case study of a traditional manufacturer that has achieved stellar success through digital servitization business models development.

  • The effects of lean production on worker job stress
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 26:9-10, s. 1013-1038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose-This empirical paper seeks to address the neglected work condition aspect of lean production (LP) implementation, specifically the relationship between LP and worker job stress. Design/methodology/approach-The Karasek job stress model was used to link shopfloor practices to expected worker stress. The model incorporates the effects of job demands (physical and psychological), job control and social support. The study employs management and worker questionnaires, management interviews and structured plant tours. The response variable is total worker job stress-the sum of the physical and mental stress levels. The independent variable for the first question is the degree of lean implementation at the sites. Findings-The results are based on 1,391 worker responses at 21 sites in the four UK industry sectors. About 11 tested practices are significantly related to stress and an unexpected non-linear response of stress to lean implementation is identified. Results indicate that LP is not inherently stressful, with stress levels significantly related to management decisions in designing and operating LP systems. Practical implications-The hypotheses tests shed light on the relationships between LP practices and job stress, and reveal a significant managerial influence on stress levels. The regression model shows the scale and significant lean practices of this influence, with the work practices explaining 30 percent of job stress variations. The stress reduction and stress control opportunities identified in the study show the potential for designing and operating effective lean systems while also controlling stress levels. Originality/value-This is the first known multi-industry empirical study of the relationship of job stress to a range of lean practices and to the degree of lean implementation.

  • Converging production models : the STS versus lean production debate revisited
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 33:8, s. 1019-1039
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Against the background of the often politicized debate on the advantages and disadvantages of production models based on sociotechnical systems (STS) theory and lean production (LP), this paper develops a notion of a hybrid model consisting of elements of both STS and LP and tests its validity by empirical examination. Design/methodology/approach - A representative sample of manufacturing plants in Sweden was surveyed. The questionnaire measured the hybrid model in three specific constructs: STS in terms of an integrated work organizational design featuring multifunctional teams, decentralized responsibilities and integrated functions; LP in terms of adoption of lean practices such as just-in-time; and plant performance in terms of productivity, quality, delivery and speed. The obtained data were subjected to multiple regression analysis to test our convergence argument while controlling for plant size, order fulfilment practice and production process type. Findings - A relationship between the elements of STS and LP is found. Implementing elements of both production models together leads to better plant performance than implementing either one in isolation. Furthermore, plants having an integrated work organization are possibly more successful in adopting the principles of LP, which in turn leads to improved plant performance. Originality/value - In contrast to earlier research, the paper argues based on empirical findings that there is no inherent conflict between STS and LP. Rather, these production models have evolved over time and converged into a hybrid. The strong relationship between work organization design and LP practices suggests a need for a broad and parallel change effort for high performance impact.

  • Supply-side resilience as practice bundles : a critical incident study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 36:8, s. 948-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a typology of supply-side resilience capabilities and empirically validates these capabilities and their constituent bundles of practices. Design/methodology/approach - The study is primarily qualitative, employing the critical incident technique to collect data across 22 firms and seeking to validate how and why practice bundles form and relate to operations performance. It contains a frequency of occurrence analysis for the purpose of triangulation, a minor statistical part to provide some additional evidence of bundle formation and correlation between adoption of bundles of practices and recovered operations performance after upstream supply chain disruptions. Findings - Four supply-side resilience capabilities are conceptualized along two dichotomous dimensions - "proactive/reactive" and "internal/external" - in a 2x2 matrix as proactive-internal, proactive-external, reactive-internal and reactive-external resilience capabilities. Empirical support for the conceptualized typology is found. Bundles of specific practices that can be associated with each capability are identified. Moreover, the study finds a relationship between these practice bundles and recovered operations performance. Research limitations/implications - The statistical part is used just to provide some additional evidence through factor and regression analyses that these capabilities exist and do benefit adopting firms. Practical implications - Specifies practices that lead to recovered operations performance in the event of supply disruptions. Originality/value - Advances current theory by operationalizing resilience as a set of dynamic capabilities in terms of practice bundles that aid in recovering operations performance upon supply disruptions.
