  • Reflections of men and women in advanced old age on being the other sex
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 30:2, s. 193-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study reported in this paper is part of the Umeå 85+ project in Sweden. The aim was to investigate gender perspectives among ‘the oldest old’, by asking men and women in advanced old age living in a sparsely populated area of northern Sweden to reflect on how life might have been if they had been born the other sex. Thematic narratives from nine men and seven women were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The content of these narratives was resolved into eight categories in two domains, respectively men's and women's reflections about being born the opposite sex. The narratives of both the men and women indicated that they were satisfied with their actual birth sex. The men were aware that if they had been born female, they would probably have experienced more hard work and had a more restricted life, and they were conscious of both women's relative powerlessness and their greater ability to manage and organise work within the home. The women's narratives described a femininity characterised by longing for a state of being unconcerned when young, and their narratives also displayed awareness of women's physical strength and that men's lives had also been hard.

  • Resilience among old Sami women
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 36, s. 1738-1756
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is lack of research on old indigenous women’s experiences. The aim of thisstudy was to explore how old women narrate their experiences of wellbeing andlack of wellbeing using the salutogenetic concept of resilience. Interviews fromnine old Sami women were analysed according to grounded theory with the followingthemes identified: contributing to resilience and wellbeing built up from the categoriesfeeling connected, feeling independent and creating meaning; andcontributing to lack of lack of resilience and wellbeing built up from the categoryexperiencing lack of connectedness. The old Sami women’s narratives showedthat they were to a high extent resilient and experienced wellbeing. They felt bothconnected and independent and they were able to create meaning of being anold Sami woman. Having access to economic and cultural capital were for the oldSami women valuable for experiencing resilience. Lack of resilience was expressedas experiences of discrimination, lack of connectedness and living on the borderof the dominant society. Analysis of the Sami women’s narratives can give wider perspectiveson women’s health and deepen the perspectives on human resilience andincrease the understanding of minority groups in a multicultural world.

  • Changing residential mobility rates of older people in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 32:6, s. 963-982
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lifestyle of the baby boomers as retirees has been assumed to differ from older cohorts due to them being financially more stable and having grown up during the welfare state expansion. Many baby boomers live in large houses with gardens that require maintenance and labour. Recent studies have indicated that a growing share of those born in the 1940s in Sweden express a wish to change residence at retirement or in old age. A need to verify such results statistically was identified to confirm whether there has been an increase in residential mobility among older people. As a result, moves that took place during 2001–06 of the total cohort born in the 1940s were compared to similar moves by those born in the 1930s, ten years earlier during 1991–96, i.e. those aged 57–66 in 1996 and 2006. The study used a register database, Geoswede, containing the entire Swedish population. The study showed increased residential mobility rates among the 1940s cohort compared to the cohort born in the 1930s. However, explanations for the differences between the cohorts were not evident.

  • Patterns of changing residential preferences during late adulthood
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 39:8, s. 1752-1781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earlier research on residential mobility has demonstrated a tendency for the young old of the 55+-population to prefer peripheral locations, whereas older age groups choose central locations. Here, we present survey results indicating that such late-adulthood differences in preferences are supported by age–related shifts corresponding to differences in housing preferences expressed by individuals in peripheral as well as central locations in Sweden. A sample of 2,400 individuals aged 55 years and over was asked to select the seven most important characteristics of a dwelling from a list of 21 alternatives (SHIELD survey 2013). The preferences expressed were used as dependent variables in logistic regressions to determine to what extent the housing preferences of older people are linked to age, gender, socio-economic status and type of geographical area. The results demonstrated a close link between neighbourhood characteristics and housing preferences. Owning the dwelling, having a garden, and access to nature were stressed as important by individuals living in non-metropolitan middle-class areas and in suburban elite areas. The youngest cohort expressed similar preferences. Older age groups instead stressed the importance of an elevator, single-storey housing, and a good design for independent living; preferences that have similarities to those expressed by individuals living in large cities and smaller urban centres where such housing is more readily available.

  • Architecture and the Swedish welfare state : three architectural competitions that innovated space for dependent and frail older people
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 35:4, s. 837-864
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2012, three architectural competitions were held as part of the strategic programme 'Living Well, Growing Old', launched by the Swedish government in 2010. The intention was to use the innovative quality of the architectural competition in order to conceive future-oriented built environments for the ageing Swedish society. In Sweden, several architectural competitions with a focus on space for dependent and frail older people have been organised over the past century. Architectural design has been incorporated into reforms for social care of older people. This study focuses on the relationship between architecture and sociopolitical visions in three architectural competitions, realised in 1997, 1948 and 1979. The study demonstrates that architectural competitions within this field are more than a list of functional and spatial requirements for architects to respect. Instead, they are socio-political statements that define spatial frameworks within an ideological view on how ethically to provide care for dependent and frail older people in a welfare regime.

  • The use of common spaces in assisted living schemes for older persons: a comparison of somatic and dementia units
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ageing and Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 36:4, s. 837-859
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores how common spaces in assisted living schemes for older persons are used by the residents. Observation studies, group interviews with staff and individual interviews with residents, relatives, architects and key stakeholders in the context of Swedish elder-care were conducted. Common spaces are the major location for in-house social interaction on the units. The results show a higher presenceon the dementia units, compared to the somatic units. No significant correlation was found between the residents’ mobility limitations and their degree of presence in the common spaces. The results also suggest a contradiction between the staff’s intentions to provide a social context and the capabilities of the residents. Although common spaces are not used much between meals, the residents stress their importance for social interaction, suggesting that common spaces have important qualitative aspects, rather than quantitative. The results also how that few of the residents used the common spaces together with their relatives. The increasing use of assistive technology creates a shortage of space, suggesting a conflict between the efforts to create a home-like environment and the use of assistive technology.

  • Developing a carer identity and negotiating everyday life through social networking sites : An explorative study on identity constructions in an online Swedish carer community
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 38:11, s. 2304-2324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An overarching reason why carers do not utilise support services is that many people who perform care-giving do not necessarily self-identify as a carer. Understanding the development of carer identities is therefore crucial for the utilisation of different carer-focused health services. This study arose from the European Union-funded INNOVAGE project and aimed to describe how older carers conceptualise and understand their identity as carers on a Swedish online social forum. Theoretically the study adopts a constructionist approach and the method of netnography was applied. The findings reveal that a change in self-perception occurs in the process through which a carer role is acquired. The presence or absence of recognition for the older carers’ capacity, knowledge and life situation is seen as filtered through the needs of the care recipient, making the carer identity into an invisible self. This is not least the case when the identity is constructed in alliance with conceptual and moral obligations found within a marital discourse. Nevertheless, the opportunity for online communication may help to create a virtual space of social recognition through which different experiences attached to caring can be discussed. The significance of online communication is here understood as the possibility it presents for carers to be recognised by other carers. It is a process through which an invisible self can become visible.

  • Post-disaster quality of life among older survivors five years after the Bam earthquake : implications for recovery policy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 31:2, s. 179-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Older people are among the most vulnerable in major disasters. In their aftermath, it is crucial to institute efforts that will maintain a high level of elders' quality of life (QoL). This paper presents QoL assessments of elderly survivors five years after the Bam earthquake in Iran, and evaluates the determinants. A cross-sectional analysis of 210 randomly-selected survivors was carried out in 2008 using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. A comparison of the results with data on the general population showed that experiencing the earthquake may adversely affect psychological dimensions of QoL even five years after, but paradoxically the earthquake resulted in better social relationships in affected communities than in the general population. Lower QoL associated with female gender, higher age, living alone, severe earthquake-related injury, poor quality of living conditions, increased dependency in the activities of daily living, living in an urban area, and being temporarily housed. Recovery experts and donors should carry out long-term monitoring of health status and QoL in disaster-affected communities, with a focus on psychological wellbeing. Intervention programmes that emphasise post-disaster quality of care and satisfactory housing may lead to better QoL of the victims and may shorten the recovery phase.

  • ‘We don't talk about age’: A study of human resources retirement narratives
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 42, s. 2588-2614
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the societal and policy level, delaying retirement is generally agreed upon to solve the problem of the increasing proportion of older workers in Sweden, as in many other countries. At the same time, two co-existing narratives that create legitimacy for early versus delayed retirement were found in our study, among both societal- and organisational-level actors. Older workers are viewed as either representatives of productive ageing and a solution to labour shortage problems, or as a barrier to recruiting younger, more promising employees with new skills. Through inductive qualitative analysis, this study shows in what way human resources departments are taking part in the institutional work of maintaining retirement-timing narratives in Swedish workplaces. The existing general organisational narrative of ‘the business case’ is used to mute discussion about delaying the retirement age, except for a select few. Their maintenance of this narrative is supported by the way in which the societal-level narratives target the individual, often backgrounding the role of employers.
