  • The value of forests for tourism in Sweden
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 22:3, s. 671-680
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden has a vast quantity of forests and the Right of Common Access allows tourists to freely enter any forest no matter who owns it. An economic valuation study was carried out in two tourism areas, one in the southern part of the country and one in the northern part. It was shown that a considerable portion of the value to tourists is attributable to forest characteristics. Furthermore, the results suggest that this value can be increased by modifying forest management practices; for example, by making clearcuts smaller, even if there were more of them, and by increasing the proportion of broad leaved trees in forest stands.

  • Risk Creation in Traveling - Backpacker adventure narration
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 28:3, s. 597-617
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses, through examples from in-depth interviews with long-term budget travelers, how culturally and socially constructed narratives about risk and adventure are manifested hv individuals in backpacker communities. Such manifestation is carried out through consumption of, for instance, experiences, plates, food, medicine, and clothing. It is argued that tales and acts of "risk and adventure" work particularly well in individuals' efforts to "narrate identity". The paper also addresses a need for more gender sensitive research, through suggesting that adventurous women mar be caught in an intersection between two logical systems. the reflexive life project of "late modernity" open to both genders and the adventure as a historically rounded masculine practice.

  • Changes in Skiing and Snowmobiling in Swedish Mountains
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 30:2, s. 485-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research note examines the changes in mountain tourism in Sweden during the last 20 years (1980-2000), asking in which areas mountain tourism is increasing or decreasing, what the changes in different activity participation rates are, and what might account for those changes. It is indicated that the southern-most county of the mountain region (Dalarna) had become the most popular location by the late 1990s. The increasing visits to this area close to the Swedish population centres may be related to the occurrence of shorter vacations and increased demand on people's time. Not only the geography of mountain visits is changing, but activities are changing as well. Downhill skiing (including snowboarding) had increased from 22% in the 1980s to 36% in the 1990s, while snowmobiling had increased from 9% in the 1980s to 16% in the 1990s.

  • Visitor flows, trajectories and corridors : planning and designing places from the traveler's point of view
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 82:May, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research underlines the importance of understanding the tourist destination as a demand-driven construct. Visitors activate different configurations of supply elements that produce a complex and dynamic fabric referred to as a space of flows. Today, we have the means to understand how these flows shape the evolution and gestalt of tourist places. This article proposes a new framework combining three concepts and related foundational theories: visitor flows, trajectories, and corridors. In tandem, they describe how tourism manifests itself in space and time. Trip decision, trip execution, and tourist performance unfold through social mechanisms generating the totality of visitor flows. Stakeholders must understand how visitor flows in their destinations emerge and evolve in order to decide on specific design interventions.

  • Place distinctiveness, psychological empowerment, and support for tourism
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 70, s. 137-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • • Residents must first find community distinct in order to be psychologically empowered.• Psychological empowerment mediates relationship between place distinctiveness and support for tourism.• Destination managers should consider raising resident awareness of community uniqueness to boost support for tourism.

  • A wider research culture in peril: A reply to Thomas
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper calls for greater rigor when it comes to issues relating to research around the ‘impact’ of research impact. It addresses some of its criticisms but also expands on the research program associated with the impact of tourism research. We conclude by addressing the fundamentality of the challenges posed by ‘research impact’. We argue they go to the very core of academic scholarship, as the commoditized neoliberal treatment of impact represents an existential challenge that goes beyond tourism research.

  • The impact of tourism research
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 77, s. 64-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exceedingly competitive climate of academia has increased the emphasis on performance-based research funding. In this paper we evaluate the UK's government assessment of research impact and critically comment upon the implications for future research conduct. The key findings are as follows; firstly we provide a summary of UK tourism research impact. Secondly, we demonstrate the effect of the resulting significance gap, and comment upon the consequences of the Research Excellence Frameworks' (REF) research impact assessment in terms of a research culture change. Lastly, we proposition that the current assessment structure can have negative long-term consequences in that key issues facing tourism fall outside 'good' research impact.

  • Tourism Evolution : On the Synergies of Tourism Studies and Evolutionary Economic Geography
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 43, s. 370-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evolutionary Economic Geography (EEG) is receiving increasing interest from tourism scholars. EEG has proven to be a useful explanatory paradigm in other sectors, e.g., high-technology and creative sectors. There remains, however, a lack of theoretical discussion on evolutionary principles of economic change within relatively low-technology service sectors, of which tourism is a prime example. This paper introduces EEG to a wider tourism audience by presenting the core principles of EEG and how they relate to tourism studies. A selection of new research paths combining EEG and tourism studies is highlighted together with a number of latent research synergies which can progress both EEG and tourism studies. The paper calls for further empirical and conceptual engagement with EEG by tourism scholars.
