  • Notes On Agile and Safety-Critical Development
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Software Engineering Notes. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0163-5948 .- 1943-5843. ; 41:2, s. 23-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agile approaches have been highly influential to the software engineering practices in many organizations, and are increasingly being applied in larger companies, and for developing systems outside the pure software domain. To understand more about the current state of agile, its applications to safety-critical systems, and the consequences on innovation and large organizations, a seminar was organized in Stockholm in 2014. This paper gives an overview of the topics discussed at that seminar, a summary of the main results and suggestions for future work as input to a research agenda for agile development of safety-critical software.

  • Emerging Software Engineering Research Networks in (East) Africa
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0163-5948. ; 46:2, s. 18-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Software engineering (SE) researchers and research networks from emerging communities are often not visible in already established Software Engineering venues for a multitude of reasons. This limits the opportunities and mutual bene ts that can arise from collaborations between global and emerging Software Engineer- ing networks. This article focuses on a rst attempt to provide a map of the African software engineering research community with focus on the networks of two big East African Universities. We hope that this very initial mapping e ort will help to raise aware- ness in the international community about the variety of software engineering research in Africa. We formulate some suggestions for making our academic Software Engineering community more inclusive.

  • Sustainable Capacity Building in Software Engineering Research in Africa: The Example of the BRIGHT Project
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0163-5948. ; 45:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The software industry is a key engine of economic growth in Africa, which calls for sustainable and innovative approaches to build capacities in software engineering research and education for the continent. This paper presents the BRIGHT project as an example for a collaboration that aims to build such capacity. The collaboration includes institutions in Sweden and Uganda. The goal of the collaboration is to train faculty in software en- gineering and to build a supporting research environment, which includes the creation of networks with the software engineering community at a global scale as well as connecting academia and the local software industry. So far, the project has resulted in 50 publications, a software engineering research centre, software engineering summer schools, and conferences.

  • Graphical notations for active rules in UML and UML-A
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Software Engineering Notes. - : ACM Press. - 0163-5948 .- 1943-5843. ; 28:2, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active rules (i.e., event condition action rules, triggers) have been put forward as a technique for reacting to important events, and thereby avoiding polling or embedding rule processing in applications. Despite the promises of active rules technology, the usage of active rules is low in practice. It has often been claimed (by database researchers) that the reason why few active rules applications have been built is due to the lack of support in analysis and design phases. Hence, there are very few notations or guidelines available for software engineers who develop active rules applications. In this paper, we propose modelling templates for UML state-charts and UML-A statecharts for how software engineers can capture the fundamentals of active rules. By following the proposed modelling templates and notations for active rules, it will be easier for software engineers to develop applications that rely on active rules technology.

  • Software Engineering for Smart Cyber-Physical Systems - Towards a Research Agenda : Report on the First International Workshop on Software Engineering for Smart CPS
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Software Engineering Notes. - : ACM Press. - 0163-5948 .- 1943-5843. ; 40:6, s. 28-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are large interconnected softwareintensivesystems that influence, by sensing and actuating, thephysical world. Examples are traffic management and power grids. One of the trends we observe is the need to endow such systemswith the “smart” capabilities, typically in the form of selfawarenessand self-adaptation, along with the traditional qualitiesof safety and dependability. These requirements combined withspecifics of the domain of smart CPS – such as large scale, the roleof end-users, uncertainty, and open-endedness – render traditionalsoftware engineering (SE) techniques not directly applicable; makingsystematic SE of smart CPS a challenging task. This paperreports on the results of the First International Workshop on SoftwareEngineering of Smart Cyber-Physical Systems (SEsCPS2015), where participants discussed characteristics, challenges andopportunities of SE for smart CPS, with the aim to outline anagenda for future research in this important area.

  • Software engineering for large-scale multi-agent systems-SELMAS 2004 : workshop report
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0163-5948. ; 29:5, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is intended to sum up the results of the Third International Workshop on Software Engineering for Large-Scale Multi-Agent System (SELMAS 2004) held in Edinburgh, Scotland, May 24--25, 2004, as part of the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2004). The main purpose of this workshop was to share and pool the collective experience of people, both academics and practitioners, who are actively working on software engineering for large-scale multi-agent systems. The call for papers elicited some 24 submissions, of which 14 papers were accepted for presentation. A set of selected workshop and invited papers are to appear in a Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS, Springer) volume. The workshop consisted of an opening presentation, two keynote talks, four technical sessions of paper presentations, and two panels. During the workshop we informally reviewed ongoing and previous work and debated a number of important issues. The SELMAS 2004 website can be found at <http://www.teccomm.les.inf.puc-rio.br/semas2004>. We begin by presenting an overview of our goals and the workshop structure, and then focus on the workshop technical program.

  • 1st International Requirements Engineering Efficiency Workshop – REEW 2011
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Software Engineering Notes. - : ACM. - 0163-5948 .- 1943-5843. ; 36:3, s. 26-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Requirements engineering research has for a long time focused on specification quality, leading to recommendations of how to engineer “perfect” requirements specifications. Practitioners, however, do not have the time, resources, and interests for overdoing requirements engineering. Rather, many situations call for shortcuts that allow investing effort in those concerns that are critical for success, while reducing effort in other areas where risk is comparably smaller. The social context, smart collaboration processes, and novel ways of looking at the interface between stakeholders and the supplier can be a basis to increase the yield of requirements engineering, while reducing required effort. The International Requirements Engineering Efficiency Workshop (REEW 2011) aimed at initiating, facilitating, and nurturing the discussion on efficient approaches to engineer just good-enough requirements. Requirements engineering was seen as a means that can be simplified, automated, or combined with other practices to achieve successful systems in an economically efficient manner. REEW 2011 provided a platform for the community of practitioners and research experts that are interested in productivity enhancing approaches to requirements engineering. This report describes the workshop results including tactics, practice, and trade-offs for achieving requirements engineering efficiency.

  • Preliminary Experience from the DICE System - A Distributed Incremental Compiling Environment
  • 1984
  • Ingår i: ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0163-5948.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The DICE system Is a highly Integrated programming environment which provides programmer support in the case where the programming environment resides in a host computer and the program Is running on a target computer that Is connected to the host. Such a system configuration is also suitable for remote debugging and maintenance of production versions of programs that has been installed in a user environment. The system contains tools such as an screen-oriented structure editor, a statement-level incremental compiler, a screen-oriented debugger and a program database. The debugger uses the same facility for pointing and display as does the editor, and it uses the incremental compiler for insertion of breakpoints and statement evaluation. Most of these tools are automatically generated from compact descriptions. This paper describes some aspects of a prototype version of the system and gives some preliminary data on the performance. Also, strategies for implementing portable programming environments are discussed and are exemplified by the DiCE system.
