  • Occupational Balance in People with Schizophrenia
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 26:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to illuminate the concept of occupational balance and to study its relation to occupational engagement as assessed by the POES, health related factors, and quality of life among 72 persons with schizophrenia. Three constructs: being under-occupied, being over-occupied, and having occupational balance, were developed to help assess occupational balance. The inter-reliability testing of occupational balance resulted in good agreement on average. The descriptive statistics showed that 32 participants were deemed to be under-occupied, 35 participants had occupational balance, while five participants were over-occupied. Significant statistical differences were found between the subgroups of being under-occupied and having occupational balance regarding negative symptoms, sense of coherence and quality of life.

  • Psychosocial Factors’ Influence on Work Ability of People Experiencing Sick Leave Resulting From Common Mental Disorders
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 31:3, s. 283-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A description of how people with the experience of long-term sick leave resulting from common mental disorders perceive that psychosocial factors influence their work ability. The Worker Role Interview was conducted with 14 informants and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The informants believed in their future work ability. Most had had to adjust their habits and routines to manage their working and private lives in relation to their mental health problems. Occupational therapists need more knowledge about how to strengthen clients' beliefs in their occupational abilities and how to organize their daily activities in a balanced fashion.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - Philadelphia : Routledge. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 29:1, s. 85-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the structure and content of an occupational therapy group treatment program intended to enable lifestyle changes for return to work, used with women who have stress-related disorders. The Redesigning Daily Occupations-program constitutes three phases. Phase I focuses on occupational self-analysis. Phase II focuses on setting goals and strategies for change, and Phase III is a job placement program that provides opportunities to implement the strategies when work is restarted. The program may be of use for the target group and additional populations where people experience difficulties in organizing their daily occupations. The program outcome should be evaluated. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

  • A systematic review and narrative synthesis of occupational therapy-led interventions for individuals with anxiety and stress-related disorders
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - Philadelphia, PA : Routledge. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 35:2, s. 179-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anxiety and stress-related disorders are highly prevalent and impede participation in life activities. Occupational therapists work extensively with people diagnosed with these disorders but the effectiveness of their interventions is unclear. A systematic search strategy identified 19 papers describing 13 studies. Studies varied in methodology, intervention type, and theory base. The results show the potential for lifestyle approaches, occupational science-based programs, and skill-building to improve mental health. The variety of interventions and methodologies of many studies means that the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions for this population is not yet determined. High-quality research is required to replicate interventions with emerging potential for effectiveness.

  • Occupational therapists’ perception of the Tree Theme Method™ as an intervention in psychosocial occupational therapy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 27:1, s. 36-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated how occupational therapists experience utilization of the Tree Theme Method, an intervention based on creative activities and life-story telling and making. The Tree Theme Method is comprised of five sessions in which the therapist asks the client to paint symbolic trees, with specific themes representing their present life situation, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and the future. Nine occupational therapists in mental health care were asked about their experiences when using the Tree Theme Method. The informants formed two focus groups and each group was interviewed twice. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify five categories including: (1) therapeutic frames, (2) therapist requirements, (3) client requirements, (4) the therapeutic relationship, and (5) the Tree Theme Method as a multi-dimensional process. Overall the informants were satisfied with the intervention with some variation as to therapists' perception about the helpfulness of the tool. The Tree Theme Method was experienced as a structured method of starting a therapeutic process and initiating a therapist-client relationship. The therapeutic attitude, self-knowledge, and expert knowledge seemed to be important prerequisites for the therapists when using the Tree Theme Method intervention.

  • Experiences of Occupational Value When Doing Creative Activities in a Mental Health Context
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - Philadelphia, PA : Routledge. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 38:4, s. 383-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Everything a person does generates a unique experience of occupational value, and occupational values can in turn generate meaning in life. Doing creative activities positively influences subjective health and well-being. This article provides information about how and to what extent people diagnosed with mental illness experienced occupational value when participating in an intervention with creative activities. Thirty-three participants provided data within a mixed-methods design. Data were analyzed by quantitative non-parametric statistical methods and qualitative directed content analysis. Interventions with creative activities enable a high degree of experienced occupation value and are associated with all dimensions in the occupational value triad. © 2022 The Author(s). • Performance of occupations in daily life among individuals with severe mental disorders
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; :2, s. 33-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of this study were to describe self-perceived capability to perform daily occupations, functional cognitive ability and differences between self-perceived capability to perform daily occupations and cognitive levels among individuals with severe mental disorders. Fifty-one persons participated in the study. The participants completed a structured interview concerning their own perceived experiences of daily occupations, they were also observed during performance of a standardized task and assigned a cognitive level score. The results showed that most participants perceived small problems in Activities of Daily Living. On the other hand, Play and Leisure Activities seemed problematic to them. The participants' cognitive levels seem to correlate with their performance of Work and Productive Activities. The results also showed that a structural tool focusing on capability to perform daily occupations enabled mentally disabled persons to have a perspective of their own. Together with observed assessment it gave complementary information about these people's occupational performance. These shared identified occupational problems could serve as a foundation for planning individually adapted interventions
