  • The dialect of São João da Chapada : possible remains of a mining language in Minas Gerais, Brazil
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0165-2516 .- 1613-3668. ; :258, s. 143-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the analysis of a specific vocabulary, possibly the remains of a mining language spoken by descendants of Africans. It analyzes 149 lexical items that were registered in the 1920s in a rural region of Minas Gerais, near the city of Diamantina. Based on earlier historical and linguistic studies, as well as on dictionaries of relevant African languages, the lexical study aims to analyze 149 words and expressions in order to verify the etymologies, and determine whether they fit the demographic data available on the origins of the slave population in this area. The second aim is to analyze the distribution of the lexical items in different semantic domains and word classes and compare the observed tendencies, as well as other linguistic characteristics and social functions, with other mining languages and/or similar Afro-Brazilian and Afro-European varieties. The results indicate that Umbundu maintained a high status in the area, and that this variety was not limited to mining activities, but was probably used in everyday life as a secret code that was part of the strategies of resistance among slaves.

  • Sweden's multilingual language policy through the lens of Turkish-heritage family language practices and beliefs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language. - : Mouton de Gruyter. - 0165-2516 .- 1613-3668. ; 2023:283, s. 77-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study eplores the language maintenance efforts of Turkish heritage-speaker families in Sweden and their relations to state-level language policy from three angles. First, Swedish mainstream language ideology is described as it manifests in legislation, language policy and mother-tongue tuition. Then, the language practices of the families of 105 Turkish/Swedish children (age 4 to 7) are characterised via a questionnaire survey. This is complemented by findings from a follow-up study two years later, where ten of the families participated in interviews and home observations. Parents preferred to speak Turkish and wanted their child to learn and speak Turkish alongside Swedish. Another common denominator was the children's early, extensive preschool attendance. Parent-child interaction was predominantly Turkish, although second-generation parents raised in Sweden reported higher uses of the majority language Swedish. Exposure to Swedish increased over time due to schooling, sibling interaction and media use, but third-generation children still spoke Turkish to a considerable degree. In their heritage-language maintenance efforts, many parents enlisted the support of grandparents, mother-tongue tuition, and literacy activities. Parents generally considered Turkish and Swedish equally important and showed low levels of anxiety regarding their children's bilingualism, unlike what has been reported in studies of the same ethnolinguistic group in other national settings. The interviews revealed that parents who consulted Swedish health professionals and teachers were advised to speak and support the heritage language (Turkish) and maximise exposure to it in the home. Whilst unusual from an international perspective, this is in line with the official multilingual language ideology in Sweden.

  • English as Eastern : Zhuang, Mongolian, Mandarin, and English in the linguistic orders of globalized China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0165-2516 .- 1613-3668. ; 271, s. 35-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Socially constructed and globally propagated East-West binaries have influenced language ideologies about English in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), but they are not hegemonic. This essay explores how East-West language ideologies are reformed in mergers with Mandarin-minority language ideologies. It discusses two separate but similar recent studies of minority language speakers and language ideologies in the PRC, respectively by Grey and Baioud. Each study reveals aspects of how Mandarin and English are being socially constructed as on the same side of a dichotomous and hierarchic linguistic and social order, in contradistinction to minority languages. The essay thus problematizes the construction of English as a Western language and Mandarin as an Eastern language; both in academic discourses and in wider social and political discourses. The essay uses Asif Agha’s theory of “enregisterment” to unify the points drawn from each study. It concludes that the language ideologies and practices/discourses under examination reproduce the displacement of a subaltern status; we describe this process as dynamic, internal Orientalism and “recursive” Orientalism, drawing on foundational theory of language ideologies. This essay paves the way for further studies of recursive Orientalism.

  • Introduction : Defining language emancipation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language. - 0165-2516 .- 1613-3668. ; 2011:209, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As we know, the interaction between humans is often characterized and regulated by some kind of power hierarchy or pecking order both at the individual and collective levels. Emancipatory politics means the changing of this hierarchical power structure, so that a new, democratic (or at least more democratic than before) structure emerges. According to Anthony Giddens, emancipatory policy is concerned with reducing or eliminating an illegitimate domination of some individuals or groups by others, so that justice, equality, and participation for all will become possible (Giddens 1991: 210-215). This introduction deals with emancipation in the context of language and linguistic rights. First, some definitions of language emancipation are given and discussed and examples of different kinds of emancipatory developments are described. In this introduction examples are taken primarily from the Nordic countries. Second, the importance of revalorization of a stigmatized language and culture and the impact of modernization on language emancipation are discussed. Third, some ethical issues are taken up. This introduction ends with a brief presentation of the rest of this thematic issue of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language. It comprises six case studies illustrating some of the “many faces of language emancipation”, and a coda which sums up and evaluates the case studies in the context of language emancipation at the end.

  • "She didn't expect to get a slap" : Modeling "proper" conduct among teachers and students in training classes for care workers in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0165-2516 .- 1613-3668. ; 2020:262, s. 39-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current study is carried out in an ethnically diverse three-semester vocational adult education programme in Sweden for those who aspire to register as assistant nurses. The data is based on field notes taken during participant observations and video-recordings of the classroom interaction in a course on dementia care in the autumn of 2014. In Sweden, care work is framed by the goals stated in The Swedish Social Services Act, which is to promote the elderly’s right to self-determination and independence. In the class in which this study was carried out, this policy informed the teaching of “good” communication practices. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how the strategies taught in school that embody this policy come into conflict with the seemingly unavoidable dilemmas experienced by trainee students on the work floor. We analyse two examples of teachers acting out hypothetical scenes for the purpose of modeling proper caregiver conduct in dealing with frail, powerless individuals with dementia. The students’ descriptions of their own conduct in managing challenging resident behaviour are thereby considered as accountable actions. The article brings into focus the complexity of the power relations and institutional asymmetries at play concerning the teaching situation in training classes for care workers.
