  • Conceptual modeling in a document management environment using part-of reasoning in description logics
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 32:1, s. 51-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The notion of giving support to composite objects in systems is gaining strength in a number of areas. In this paper we examine the usefulness of introducing part-of reasoning in a description logic in a document management environment. We identify key issues in both expressivity and inferencing. We define a language that allows for differentiating between different kinds of parts and definition of domains, number restrictions and ordering of parts. We identified also questions and inferences which are useful in document management. This has led us to define a part-of hierarchy for individuals and inferences concerning the assembly of composite objects.

  • The constituents of business interaction - Generic layered patterns
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 47:3, s. 327-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to perform business modelling as apart of information systems development, there is a need for frameworks and methods. The paper proposes a framework for business interaction based on a language/action perspective. The framework is an architecture of five generic layers. The first layer concept is 'business act', which functions as the basic unit of analysis. The following four layer concepts are 'action pair', 'exchange', 'business transaction', and 'transaction group'. The framework is inspired by a similar framework constructed by Weigand et al. The paper makes a critical examination of this framework as a basis for the proposed framework. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • A transition logic for schemata conflicts
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 51:3, s. 277-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conflict detection and analysis are of high importance, e.g., when integrating conceptual schemata, such as UML-Specifications, or analysing goal-fulfilment of sets of autonomous agents. In general, models for this introduce unnecessarily complicated frameworks with several disadvantages regarding semantics as well as complexity. This paper demonstrates that an important set of static and dynamic conflicts between specifications can be diagnosed using ordinary first-order modal logic. Furthermore, we show how the framework can be extended for handling situations when there are convex sets of probability measures over a state-space. Thus, representing specifications as conceptual schemata and using standard Kripke models of modal logic, augmented with an interval-valued probability measure, we propose instrumental definitions and procedures for conflict detection.

  • Conceptually-grounded mapping patterns for Virtual Knowledge Graphs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virtual Knowledge Graphs (VKGs) constitute one of the most promising paradigms for integrating and accessing legacy data sources. A critical bottleneck in the integration process involves the definition, validation, and maintenance of mapping assertions that link data sources to a domain ontology. To support the management of mappings throughout their entire lifecycle, we identify a comprehensive catalog of sophisticated mapping patterns that emerge when linking databases to ontologies. To do so, we build on well-established methodologies and patterns studied in data management, data analysis, and conceptual modeling. These are extended and refined through the analysis of concrete VKG benchmarks and real-world use cases, and considering the inherent impedance mismatch between data sources and ontologies. We validate our catalog on the considered VKG scenarios, showing that it covers the vast majority of mappings present therein.

  • User behaviour modeling and content based speculative web page retrieval
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - Amsterdam : Elsevier Science Publishers B. V.. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 59:3, s. 770-788
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a transparent and speculative algorithm for content based web page prefetching. The algorithm relies on a profile based on the Internet browsing habits of the user. It aims at reducing the perceived latency when the user requests a document by clicking on a hyperlink. The proposed user profile relies on the frequency of occurrence for selected elements forming the web pages visited by the user. These frequencies are employed in a mechanism for the prediction of the user’s future actions. For the anticipation of an adjacent action, the anchored text around each of the outbound links is used and weights are assigned to these links. Some of the linked documents are then prefetched and stored in a local cache according to the assigned weights. The proposed algorithm was tested against three different prefetching algorithms and yield improved cache–hit rates given a moderate bandwidth overhead. Furthermore, the precision of accurately inferring the user’s preference is evaluated through the recall–precision curves. Statistical evaluation testifies that the achieved recall–precision performance improvement is significant.

  • Special issue on conceptual modeling – 34th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2015)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 107, s. 1-2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We are happy to bring you this special issue of Data and Knowledge Engineering based on the 34th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2015), which was held on 19–22 October 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden. Since 1979, when its first edition was held in Los Angeles, the ER conference has been the flagship conference series and the premier international meeting space for the Conceptual Modeling community. In 2015, the conference attracted 131 submissions from all parts of the world, 41 of which were accepted as long and short papers. The technical program also included four keynotes, nine workshops, five tutorials, a Ph.D. colloquium, a demo session, and a panel session. The conference covered a broad range of areas in conceptual modeling, from ontology-based modeling and data model semantics to conceptual modeling for big data and applications of modeling in health and social care.

  • Artificial intelligence in digital twins—A systematic literature review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Data & Knowledge Engineering. - 0169-023X .- 1872-6933. ; 151
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial intelligence and digital twins have become more popular in recent years and have seen usage across different application domains for various scenarios. This study reviews the literature at the intersection of the two fields, where digital twins integrate an artificial intelligence component. We follow a systematic literature review approach, analyzing a total of 149 related studies. In the assessed literature, a variety of problems are approached with an artificial intelligence-integrated digital twin, demonstrating its applicability across different fields. Our findings indicate that there is a lack of in-depth modeling approaches regarding the digital twin, while many articles focus on the implementation and testing of the artificial intelligence component. The majority of publications do not demonstrate a virtual-to-physical connection between the digital twin and the real-world system. Further, only a small portion of studies base their digital twin on real-time data from a physical system, implementing a physical-to-virtual connection.
