  • Media-driven Men and Media-critical Women? : An Empirical Study of Gender and MPs’ Relationships with the Media in Norway and Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - London : Sage. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 32:2, s. 167-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is an investigation of how members of the Norwegian and the Swedish parliaments relate to and perceive their relationships with the media. Based on surveys conducted among members of the Norwegian Storting and the Swedish Riksdag, we find that male MPs have more frequent and somewhat less formal relationships with media and journalists compared with female MPs. The results also suggest that male MPs have adapted to the media and their logic more than female MPs. Female MPs also appear to be more critical towards the requirements imposed on politicians who want to get media exposure, compared with male MPs. Analysis reveals that gender differences are smaller among Swedish than Norwegian MPs.

  • The autonomy of globalizing states : bridging the gap between democratic theory and international political economy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 32:1, s. 43-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scholars of democratic theory and international political economy often disagree over the effects of globalization on state autonomy. Yet, each approach pays minimal attention to the contributions of the other to their common object of study. In an effort to remedy this situation, I identify the premises and procedural habits of each approach which tend to make it appear irrelevant to the other, and then adjust them to remove the appearance of irrelevance without impairing the integrity of each approach. The argument is illustrated by observations from Britain, France and Sweden in recent decades.

  • The continuum of election violence : Gendered candidate experiences in the Maldives
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 44:1, s. 107-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on election violence often does not capture its psychological and gendered dimensions. Gender differences on the continuum of violence, as acknowledged in other fields, are applied here to election violence. Specifically, this article explores ways to unveil the forms of election violence that are hidden from the view of an external observer because they are either not carried out in public or not recognized as violence. Survey data and interview material was collected from men and women political candidates participating in the 2014 national elections in the Maldives. The study concludes that the continuum of violence is relevant for adequately assessing the full range of illegitimate acts used against men and women candidates to affect electoral races. Women candidates in the Maldives were more exposed than men candidates to threats and to verbal and figurative sexualized aggression.

  • Institutional foundations of global well-being : Democracy, state capacity and social protection
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 42:5, s. 705-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is an article about the foundations of human well-being. It makes two integrated contributions. We first examine well-being around the contemporary world, finding a remarkable correlation between subjective and objective measures and a considerable variation in overall well-being among countries. We then argue that certain institutional conditions have laid the basis for these differences. Integrating insights from several research strands, we outline a new explanatory model of popular well-being that considers the interactions between three institutional provisions: a well-functioning democracy, advanced state capacity, and an encompassing social protection system. To test the relationships implied, we used a new dataset involving more than 100 countries in the contemporary world that extends six decades back in time. Our investigations indicated that all three factors play a role in promoting popular well-being. However, to understand how, we need to consider the ways in which they can complement, substitute and mutually reinforce each other.

  • The dynamics of the winner-loser gap in satisfaction with democracy: Evidence from a Swedish citizen panel
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 38:5, s. 625-641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several studies have demonstrated a gap in support for the political system between electoral winners and losers. This research has generated a large stock of knowledge about the causes and effects of this winner-loser gap. However, we know little about the dynamics of the winner-loser gap over time. Drawing on a unique Swedish panel survey, this study investigates the stability of the winner-loser gap among Swedish voters over an electoral cycle of four years. The empirical analyses demonstrate a substantial consistency of the gap over time also when controlling for other determinants. The winner-loser gap thus seems to be a stable phenomenon rather than a short-lived election effect. The results are robust to different specifications and statistical techniques.

  • Problems in Paradise? : Challenges to future democratization in democratic states
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 33:1, s. 25-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What are the challenges to future democratization in states regarded as democratic? This study shows that some states that are traditionally regarded as democratic consist of political institutions in need of further democratization. On average, states that are classified as democratic have one or two institutional dimensions in need of further democratization. The main institutional dimensions in need of democratization are functions of government, rule of law, personal autonomy and individual rights. In order to investigate challenges to future democratization, the study presents a methodology that uses Freedom House Index and Polity Index in a new innovative way.

  • Leader-driven foreign-policy change : Denmark and the Persian Gulf War
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 34:5, s. 582-597
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In contrast to most previous research on foreign-policy change, this article investigates how an individual decision-maker can have an impact on major changes in foreign policy. The article takes as its theoretical point of departure the concept of leader-driven change, which focuses on the determined efforts of a political leader to change policy. Empirically, the article investigates the change that occurred in Denmark’s foreign policy when its government decided to participate in the United Nations sanctions against Iraq in August 1990. The article finds that the foreign minister was the main initiator of the policy change, that his personal characteristics played a decisive role, and that the Gulf crisis created a window of opportunity for the foreign minister to initiate the change in policy. In implementing the policy change, however, the foreign minister could not act independently, since he needed the support of other political actors. On the basis of these empirical      findings, the article suggests a new theory of foreign-policy change.

  • Political Participation and Regime Stability : A Framework for Analyzing Hybrid Regimes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 30:1, s. 7-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In past decades a number of countries that have moved away from outright authoritarianism have not transformed into democracies, but rather into regimes that combine democratic and non-democratic characteristics, sometimes labeled hybrid regimes. This article develops a framework for analyzing hybrid regimes. Empirically, the article examines three cases, Tanzania, Russia, and Venezuela, looking specifically at electoral participation and support for the opposition, as well as the potential for political change, i.e. public discontent and conditions for mobilization. The article demonstrates that the stability of hybrid regimes is related to the incumbents' ability to circumvent the opposition, but also to the lack of interplay between citizens and opposition parties.

  • The legislature as a gendered workplace : Exploring members of parliament's experiences of working in the Swedish parliament
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 40:2, s. 197-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Do men and women legislators have equal opportunities to carry out their parliamentary duties? An important first step to uncover the parliament’s inner life is to evaluate members of parliament’s (MPs) experiences of their work environment. In this article, we explore the Swedish parliament where women have held over 40% of the seats for two decades to test the persistence of gendered norms and practices. Using an originally-collected survey dataset of 279 Swedish MPs (82% response rate), we find that female MPs experience greater pressure, higher levels of anxiety, and are subject to more negative treatment than male MPs. Yet, while men and women report participating in debates and influencing their political party’s agenda to the same degree, we conclude that the Parliament’s working environment remains gendered in that women pay a higher personal cost for their political engagement.

  • The Information Revolution, Security and International Relations : (IR)relevant Theory?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 27:3, s. 221-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is twofold: to analyze the impact of the information revolution on security and to clarify what existing international relations theory can say about this challenge. These pertinent questions are initially addressed by a critical review of past research. This review shows that the concern for security issues is largely confined to a specialist literature on information warfare and cyber-security, while neither the general literature on information society nor security studies pay any serious attention to information-technology-related security issues. The specialist literature is mostly policy oriented, and only very rarely informed by theory, whether from the international relations discipline or any other field. In this article, three general international relations “schools” (realism, liberalism, and constructivism) are scrutinized with regard to what they can say about security in the digital age. It is argued that the liberal focus on pluralism, interdependence, and globalization, the constructivist emphasis on language, symbols, and images (including “virtuality”), and some elements of realist strategic studies (on information warfare) contribute to an understanding of digital-age security. Finally, it is suggested that pragmatism might help to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and overcome the dualistic, contending nature of international relations theories.
