  • Parenting hassles mediate predictors of Chinese and Korean immigrants' psychologically controlling parenting
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 47, s. 13-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined: (1) the mediating role of parenting daily hassles in the associations between three predictors (child temperament, maternal psychological well-being, and marital quality) and psychologically controlling practices in two Asian immigrant samples. We also explored the moderating role of maternal acculturation in the path from parenting daily hassles to psychological control. Participants were 152 Chinese and 165 Korean immigrant mothers with preschool children in the U.S. Multi-group path analysis revealed that easier child temperament, higher psychological well-being, and better marital quality were each associated with fewer parenting daily hassles, which in turn were associated with less psychological control. These general mediating effects held for both groups. However, the indirect effects of child temperament, maternal psychological well-being, and marital quality through parenting daily hassles were further moderated by acculturation for Chinese immigrant mothers, but not Korean immigrant mothers. The culturally similar and different findings across the two groups were discussed.

  • The importance of near-seated peers for elementary students academic engagement and achievement
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 57, s. 42-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although students are part of a group of classmates, they spend the majority of time during lessons with students who are seated next or close to them. Therefore, near-seated peers in elementary school classrooms might play a crucial role in students academic development. It was hypothesized that near-seated peers influence students academic engagement and achievement, especially when they are also friends. Participants were 559 fourth sixth grade students (21 classrooms; 51.9% boys; Mage = 10.65 years, range = 8-12). Longitudinal social network analysis (RSiena) showed that students academic engagement and achievement got better when friends scored better, and vice versa, regardless of their physical position in the classroom. In contrast, near-seated peers who were not befriended got more diverse scores over time. These results imply that teachers should consider students friendships and academic engagement and achievement in designing seating arrangements. Moreover, it is recommended to actively monitor ongoing peer influence processes.

  • Parent-youth discussions about politics from age 13 to 28
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 62, s. 249-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been commonly assumed that post-adolescent youth have fewer political discussions with parents than do adolescents, due to transitional events in young adulthood and the emergence of new age-appropriate socializing agents, like peers, colleagues, and romantic partners. We proposed a contrasting view that post-adolescent youth have more frequent political discussions with parents due to their increased political interest over time. Using an accelerated longitudinal design (n = 4286), we found that neither transitional events nor political discussions with other socializing agents decreased political discussions with parents. The long-term developmental trajectories for political discussions with parents and youth's own political interest showed a linear increase from adolescence to young adulthood. Cross-lagged models showed that youth's political interest positively predicted political discussions with parents over time and vice-versa. These findings indicate a need to see political discussions with parents as a parent-youth bidirectional process.

  • Best friends in adolescence show similar educational careers in early adulthood
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 33:2, s. 102-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigated the role of best friends in educational career development from adolescence to adulthood. Participants' (N = 476) reciprocal best friendships were identified at age 15, while their educational attainment was investigated in early adulthood (age 26), their intelligence (IQ) at age 13, and parental education, educational expectations and academic achievement at age 16. The results revealed that adolescent best friends ended up pursuing similar educational careers in adulthood. Furthermore, three kinds of partner-effects were found when adolescents' prior career behaviors were controlled for: (1) best friends' intelligence predicted adolescents' later academic performance; (2) best friends' parental education predicted adolescents' educational expectations; and (3) best friends' educational expectations predicted adolescents' educational attainment in early adulthood.

  • Sexual orientation, peer relationships, and depressive symptoms : Findings from a sociometric design
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sexual minority youth report poorer mental health than heterosexual youth. According to the minority stress framework, this results from sexual minority individuals being societally marginalized, which for sexual minority youth may include being poorly integrated in the peer context. A sociometric approach was used to test whether peer relationships, measured broadly as friendship, acceptance, disliking, and bullying relationships, mediated the link between a sexual minority orientation and depressive symptoms in adolescence. Analyses were conducted across three samples from the Netherlands and Belgium (N = 352; N = 1848; N = 263). Sexual minority respondents reported higher levels of depressive symptoms than heterosexual respondents, yet sexual orientation differences in peer relationships were small. Moreover, no link between peer relationships and depressive symptoms was found. Consequently, indirect effects were small too.

  • Do friends' co-rumination and communication with parents prevent depressed adolescents from self-harm?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 41, s. 120-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the role of both ease of communication with parents and co-rumination with one's best friend in the link between depressive symptoms and self-harm in a sample of Italian adolescents. Furthermore, it analyzes the possible differences between boys and girls in this link. Questionnaires were administered at a six-month interval at 711 adolescents attending three different schools (M-age = 15.53). Moderation and multiple-group analyses were conducted using a path approach. Results showed both ease of communication with parents and co-rumination with one's best friend decreasing the likelihood of engaging in self-harm. Depressed adolescents were less likely to develop self-harm when they perceived communication with parents as easy. Multiple-group analysis verified this relation only for girls. The findings highlight the importance of interpersonal relationships in decreasing the likelihood of engaging in self-harm, and stress the role of a positive family setting in helping particularly depressed girls not to self-harm.

  • Self-determination theory and the role of political interest in adolescents' sociopolitical development
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 50, s. 71-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we adopted an agentic perspective and used self-determination theory to analyze the role of political interest in youth's sociopolitical development. Inspired by this theoretical framework, we identified indicators of the needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence within the political sphere. We followed two age cohorts (Swedish 13- and 16-year-olds) over one year, with a total of 1992 adolescents, who are at a crucial age for sociopolitical development. Results from autoregressive structural cross-lagged models indicated that political interest predicted significant increases in autonomy, relatedness, and competence over one year, but these psychological needs did not predict a change in political interest over the same time period. The findings speak in favor of an agentic perspective, suggesting that political interest can serve as a basis for youth's political development.

  • Linking self and society: Identity and the immigrant experience in two macro-contexts
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to compare identity processes associated with the immigrant experience in two macro-contexts, the U.S and Sweden. Using a qualitative narrative approach, we explored how immigrant and non-immigrant youth negotiate their identities in the intersection between individual selves and society, by studying how they experience deviations from societal expectations and whether such deviations were associated with alternative group belonging. The sample consisted of 59 narratives written by 1st and 2nd generation immigrants and non-immigrants (age 16–25). Results indicated that the U.S. participants were more likely to define themselves using racial and multi-ethnic categories, whereas Swedish participants relied on national labels. Additionally, U.S. participants showed clear evidence of deviations from societal norms, but also found belonging in social groups from those deviations. Swedish participants showed some deviations, but little evidence of group belonging. The findings highlight the contextual nature of identity development within an immigrant context. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

  • General mental ability and satisfaction with school and work : A longitudinal study from ages 13 to 48
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied developmental psychology. - : Elsevier. - 0193-3973 .- 1873-7900. ; 30:4, s. 398-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although it has been proposed that general mental ability (GMA) may affect the adjustment process, few studies have examined the relation of mental ability to individuals' sense of satisfaction with school and work. The present study investigated the importance of mental ability for school and job satisfaction, using a Swedish sample of 298 men and 399 women, followed longitudinally from the age of 13 to middle age (43 years for women, and 48 years for men). Mental ability had a weak positive correlation with school satisfaction at age 13 but not at age 16, whereas a tendency was found for a negative relation to job satisfaction at the age of 26. Adolescent levels of mental ability were associated with greater intrinsic job satisfaction in middle age for both sexes, and greater extrinsic job satisfaction for men. Longitudinal structural equation modeling indicated that the effects of general mental ability on school and job satisfaction were mediated by school and work achievement, respectively. The same model fit both sexes.

  • Spinning Membranes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 599:1-2, s. 118-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present new solutions of the classical equations of motion of bosonic (matrix-)membranes. Those relating to minimal surfaces in spheres provide spinning membrane solutions in AdS(p) X S-q, as well as in flat space-time. Nontrivial reductions of the BMN matrix model equations are also given.
