  • Life on the edge : Elites, wealth and inequality in Sonora 1871-1910
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Revista de Historia Economica - Journal of Iberian and Latin American Economic History. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0212-6109 .- 2041-3335. ; 41:1, s. 7-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper engages with and aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion regarding the role of economic and political elites in inequality dynamics and their reproduction over time. We reconstruct the distribution of wealth employing a sample of wills from the El Colegio de Sonora database covering the period of 1871-1910. We show that the rapid industrialisation and modernisation process that occurred in northern Mexico during the late-19th and early-20th centuries led to a continuous increment in wealth concentration at the top of the distribution. The Gini index measure of 0.58 for the 1871-1885 period rose to 0.80 in 1901-1910. Rather than a natural or «Kuznetsian» inevitability fundamental (kuznetsian) necessity, however, our subsequent analysis of the wills of the upper classes suggests a critical role played by the political economy at the time and highlights the importance of control over natural resources on inequality dynamics.

  • Endogenous processes of Colonial Settlement : The success and failure of European settler farming in sub-Saharan Africa*
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Revista de Historia Economica. - 0212-6109. ; 34:2, s. 237-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper comments on studies that aim to quantify the long-term economic effects of historical European settlement across the globe. We argue for the need to properly conceptualise «colonial settlement» as an endogenous development process shaped by the interaction between prospective settlers and indigenous peoples. We conduct three comparative case studies in West, East and Southern Africa, showing that the «success» or «failure» of colonial settlement critically depended on colonial government policies arranging European farmer’s access to local land, but above all, local labour resources. These policies were shaped by the clashing interests of African farmers and European planters, in which colonial governments did not necessarily, and certainly not consistently, abide to settler demands, as is often assumed.

  • SWEET BUSINESS: QUANTIFYING THE VALUE ADDED IN THE BRITISH COLONIAL SUGAR TRADE IN THE 18TH CENTURY
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Revista De Historia Economica. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0212-6109. ; 32:2, s. 223-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been a lot of research into the economic contribution of the periphery to European economic development during the early modern era. This paper estimates quantitatively the value added in the sugar trade from the Caribbean to Britain in the 18th century. The trade generated a value equivalent to around 1 per cent of British gross domestic product (GDP) by the early 18th century, growing to 4 per cent of GDP a century later. The results show that the sugar trade constituted a dynamic and rapidly growing part of the British economy, most importantly the tertiary sector.

  • Military Wages and Coup d’État in Spain (1850-1915): the Use of Public Spending as a Coup-Proofing Strategty : The USE of PUBLIC SPENDING AS A COUP-PROOFING STRATEGY
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Revista de Historia Economica - Journal of Iberian and Latin American Economic History. - 0212-6109. ; 40:2, s. 205-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1833-1874, Spain suffered 0.7 coups per year. By contrast, the Restoration (1874-1923) saw the eradication of successful coups. This can be partially attributed to the turno pacífico, which allowed the main political parties to alternate in office without dragging the military into politics. We suggest, however, that the reduction in coup risk was also associated with a conscious budget policy. This, though, did not rely on increases in total military expenditure (which actually stagnated during most of the Restoration), but on the steady improvement of officers' remunerations and promotions. This strategy was probably detrimental to Spanish military capacity abroad, but was consistent with the objective of keeping the military out of politics.
