  • Rare earth elements leaching from Chadormalu apatite concentrate : Laboratory studies and regression predictions
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering. - : Springer. - 0256-1115 .- 1975-7220. ; 28:2, s. 557-562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The extraction of rare earth elements from apatite concentrate of Chadormalu plant of Iran was studied with the dissolution of ore in nitric acid. The parameters of acidity: 60%, solid to liquid ratio: 30%, leaching time: 30 minute, agitation rate: 200 rpm, temperature: 60 °C and particle size (d80): 50 microns were determined as the optimum operational conditions. The recoveries of lanthanum, cerium, neodymium and yttrium were achieved at 74, 59, 72 and 73%, respectively, in the optimized conditions. Multivariable regression was used to predict La, Ce, Nd, Y and total REEs (Y+Nd+Ce+La) leaching recoveries, using experimental data from laboratory studies. It was achieved quite satisfactory correlations of 0.93, 0.98, 0.99, 0.97 and 0.99 for the prediction of Y, Nd, Ce, La and total REEs recoveries, respectively. It was shown that the proposed equations accurately reproduce the effects of operational variables on the different REEs recoveries, and can be used to optimize the REEs leaching plant.

  • A review on particle dynamics simulation techniques for colloidal dispersions : Methods and applications
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0256-1115 .- 1975-7220. ; 33:11, s. 3069-3078
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal dispersions have attracted much attention both from academia and industry due to industrial significance and complex dynamic properties. Accordingly, a variety of attempts have been made to understand the complicated physics of colloidal dispersions. Particle dynamics simulation has been playing an important role in exploring colloidal systems as a strong complement to experimental approaches from which it is hard to get exact microscopic information. Our aim is to provide a well-organized and up-to-date guide to particle dynamics simulation of colloidal dispersions. Among diverse particle dynamics simulation techniques, we focus on Brownian dynamics, Stokesian dynamics, multi-particle collision dynamics, and self-consistent particle simulation techniques. First, the concept of the simulation techniques will be described. Then, for each simulation technique, pros and cons are discussed with a broad range of applications, including concentrated hard sphere suspensions and biological systems. It is expected that this article helps to identify and motivate research challenges.

  • Deactivation of Pt/Wire-Mesh and Vanadia/Monolith Catalysts Applied in Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx in Flue Gas
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0256-1115 .- 1975-7220. ; 24:4, s. 583-587
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study the deactivation of Pt/wire mesh and vanadia/monolith catalysts by aerosol particles of some inorganic salts (K2SO4, KCl and ZnCl2) with high or low melting points has been investigated. The aerosol particles may either diffuse within the matrix of the catalysts and block the mezzo and micro pores, or deposit on the outer surface of the catalysts and form a porous layer causing a mass transfer resistance that ultimately deactivates the catalysts. It has been observed that in both Pt/wire mesh and vanadia/monolith catalysts the deactivation effect of ZnCl2 was more pronouced compared to other salts. As an example, after 31 hours of exposure to ZnCl2, 10% of the catalysts activities was lost. This may be related to the ZnCl2 lower melting point in comparison with other poisons. These results are in agreement with the previous findings for deactivation of wire-mesh catalysts used for oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and CO by exposing the catalysts to the aerosols generated from inorganic salts.

  • Bio-based composite as phase change material including spent coffee grounds and beeswax paraffin
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering. - : KOREAN INSTITUTE CHEMICAL ENGINEERS. - 0256-1115 .- 1975-7220. ; 40:9, s. 2342-2355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New types of bio-composite phase change materials (BCPCM) with improved thermal properties were made from spent ground coffee powder (C), beeswax (W) and low density polyethylene (LDPE). Beeswax is a relatively accessible phase change material of organic origin, with a significantly lower unit price compared to conventional phase change materials (PCM). The observations by SEM and FTIR spectroscopy showed that the BCPCMs were physically combined. Through these techniques, it was discovered that ground coffee was effectively impregnated with natural wax and LDPE. According to the thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), the thermal stability of BCPCM was improved, due to the use of waste coffee grounds, in the working temperature range. The biocomposite possesses excellent performance as characterized by 136.9 J/g (W70C10PE20)>, 127.31 J/g (W70C20PE10)>, 126.95 J/g (W70C30)>, 121.08 J/g (W70PE30) of latent heat storage and tends to decrease the supercooling degree as compared with pure beeswax during melting/solidification process. By adding LDPE to the PCM, the melting time is reduced, demonstrating an improvement in thermal energy storage (TES) reaction time to the demand. The experimental results showed that the fraction of oils (12%) in spent ground coffee powder can participate in the improvement of the thermal properties of BCPMC. The use of biocompatible PCM by-products is suitable for applications in the field of heat storage because it is affordable and environmentally beneficial.

  • Application of fuzzy partial least squares (FPLS) modeling nonlinear biological processes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering. - 0256-1115. ; 21:6, s. 1087-1097
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We applied a nonlinear fuzzy partial least squares (FPLS) algorithm for modeling a biological wastewater treatment plant. FPLS embeds the Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy model into the regression framework of the partial least squares (PLS) method, in which FPLS utilizes a TSK fuzzy model for nonlinear characteristics of the PLS inner regression. Using this approach, the interpretability of the TSK fuzzy model overcomes some of the handicaps of previous nonlinear PLS (NLPLS) algorithms. As a result, the FPLS model gives a more favorable modeling environment in which the knowledge of experts can be easily applied. Results from applications show that FPLS has the ability to model the nonlinear process and multiple operating conditions and is able to identify various operating regions in a simulation benchmark of biological process as well as in a full-scale wastewater treatment process. The result shows that it has the ability to model the nonlinear process and handle multiple operating conditions and is able to predict the key components of nonlinear biological processes.
