  • A review on agent-based technology for traffic and transportation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Knowledge engineering review (Print). - New York : Cambridge University Press. - 0269-8889 .- 1469-8005. ; 29:3, s. 375-403
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last few years, the number of papers devoted to applications of agent-based technologies to traffic and transportation engineering has grown enormously. Thus, it seems to be the appropriate time to shed light over the achievements of the last decade, on the questions that have been successfully addressed, as well as on remaining challenging issues. In the present paper, we review the literature related to the areas of agent-based traffic modelling and simulation, and agent-based traffic control and management. Later we discuss and summarize the main achievements and the challenges.

  • A Multi-Agent System Architecture for Coordination of Just-in-time Production and Distribution (extended version).
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Knowledge engineering review (Print). - : Cambridge University Press. - 0269-8889 .- 1469-8005. ; 17:4, s. 317-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multi-agent system architecture for coordination of just-in-time production and distribution is presented. The problem to solve is twofold: first the right amount of resources at the right time should be produced, then these resources should be distributed to the right consumers. In order to solve the first problem, which is hard when the production and/or distribution time is relatively long, each consumer is equipped with an agent that makes predictions of future needs that it sends to a production agent. The second part of the problem is approached by forming clusters of consumers within which it is possible to redistribute resources fast and at a low cost in order to cope with discrepancies between predicted and actual consumption. Redistribution agents are introduced (one for each cluster) to manage the redistribution of resources. The suggested architecture is evaluated in a case study concerning management of district heating systems. Results from a simulation study show that the suggested approach makes it possible to control the trade-off between quality of service and degree of surplus production. We also compare the suggested approach to a reference control scheme (approximately corresponding to the current approach to district heating management), and conclude that it is possible to reduce the amount of resources produced while maintaining the quality of service. Finally, we describe a simulation experiment where the relation between the size of the clusters and the quality of service was studied.

  • User validation in ontology alignment: functional assessment and impact
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Knowledge engineering review (Print). - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 0269-8889 .- 1469-8005. ; 34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • User validation is one of the challenges facing the ontology alignment community, as there are limits to the quality of the alignments produced by automated alignment algorithms. In this paper, we present a broad study on user validation of ontology alignments that encompasses three distinct but inter-related aspects: the profile of the user, the services of the alignment system, and its user interface. We discuss key issues pertaining to the alignment validation process under each of these aspects and provide an overview of how current systems address them. Finally, we use experiments from the Interactive Matching track of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 2015–2018 to assess the impact of errors in alignment validation, and how systems cope with them as function of their services.

  • Measuring the strength of threats, rewards, and appeals in persuasive negotiation dialogues
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Knowledge engineering review (Print). - : Cambridge University Press. - 0269-8889 .- 1469-8005. ; 35, s. 1-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to propose a model for the measurement of the strength of rhetorical arguments (i.e., threats, rewards, and appeals), which are used in persuasive negotiation dialogues when a proponent agent tries to convince his opponent to accept a proposal. Related articles propose a calculation based on the components of the rhetorical arguments, that is, the importance of the goal of the opponent and the certainty level of the beliefs that make up the argument. Our proposed model is based on the pre-conditions of credibility and preferability stated by Guerini and Castelfranchi. Thus, we suggest the use of two new criteria for the strength calculation: the credibility of the proponent and the status of the goal of the opponent in the goal processing cycle. We use three scenarios in order to illustrate our proposal. Besides, the model is empirically evaluated and the results demonstrate that the proposed model is more efficient than previous works of the state of the art in terms of numbers of negotiation cycles, number of exchanged arguments, and number of reached agreements.

  • A survey and taxonomy on intelligent surveillance from a system perspective
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Knowledge engineering review (Print). - : Cambridge University Press. - 0269-8889 .- 1469-8005. ; 33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent proliferation of surveillance systems is mostly attributed to advances in both image-processing techniques and hardware enhancement of smart cameras, as well as the ubiquity of sensor-driven architectures. Owing to these capabilities, new aspects are coming to the forefront. This paper addresses the current state-of-the-art and provides researchers with an overview of existing surveillance solutions, analyzing their properties as a system and drawing attention to relevant challenges when developing, deploying and managing them. Also, some of the more prominent application domains are highlighted here. In an effort to understand the development of the advanced solutions, based on their most distinctive characteristics, we propose a taxonomy for surveillance systems to help classify them and reveal gaps in existing research. We conclude by identifying promising future research lines.
