  • Among demons and wizards : the nuclear energy discourse in Sweden and the re-chantement of the world
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society. - : Sage publication. - 0270-4676 .- 1552-4183. ; 30:1, s. 43-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1956, the Swedish Parliament decided to invest in a national nuclear energy program. The decision rested on the conviction that it would be in the interest of the nation to use the assets of natural uranium, the advanced reactor technology, and the expertise on nuclear physics that the country had at its disposal. Since the decision concerned the largest investment ever in Swedish industrial politics, the scientists and engineers had to promise that it would lead to a prosperous future. In this article, the utopian discourse and the rhetoric that were developed to support the Swedish nuclear energy program are analyzed. An important conclusion is that the scientific, technological, political, economic, and moral discourse was not sufficient to create political and civil support. Instead, the scientists and engineers had to turn to the world of myths. Thereby, the conflicts between nuclear physics and magic, scientific objectivity and demons, and rationalistic belief in progress and irrational ideas of faith were dissolved. In Sweden, as in many other Western countries during the 1950s, the world was not disenchanted, but re-enchanted.

  • The Role of Marketization in the Europeanization of Defense Industry Policy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0270-4676 .- 1552-4183. ; 30:3, s. 176-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • European integration has increased to encompass security-related policies. One such policy is defense industry policy, which traditionally has been a national concern rooted in defense and security policy. Efforts have been made since the 1990s to create a European defense industry market. However, there have been different ideas of how this goal should be achieved or which model for state–industry relations the market should rest on. Using Sweden to illustrate the development, this article argues that for the Europeanization of defense industry policy, marketization has played a vital role. Building on official documents and interviews, the article analyzes the efforts to create a European defense industry market, marketization of Swedish defense industry policy, and the increased interaction between Swedish and European defense industry policy processes. The analysis also shows domestic challenges that the processes of Europeanization and marketization have brought about.

  • Responsibility in Engineering : Towards a New Role for Engineering Ethicists
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0270-4676 .- 1552-4183. ; 30:3, s. 222-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, the management of technology has focused on the stages before or after development of technology. In this approach the technology itself is conceived as the result of a deterministic enterprise; a result that is to be either rejected or embraced. However, recent insights from Science and Technology Studies (STS) have shown that there is ample room to modulate technology during development. This requires technology managers and engineering ethicists to become more involved in the technological research rather than assessing it from an outsider perspective. Instead of focusing on the question whether or not to authorize, approve, or adopt a certain technology or on the question of who is to blame for potential mistakes, the guiding question in this new approach is how research is to be carried out.

  • Key factors in planning a sustainable energy future including hydrogen and fuel cells
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0270-4676 .- 1552-4183. ; 26:4, s. 264-277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, a number of future energy visions, especiallythose basing the energy systems on hydrogen, are discussed. Some often missing comparisons between alternatives, from asustainability perspective, are identified and then performedfor energy storage, energy transportation, and energy use invehicles. It is shown that it is important to be aware of thelosses implied by production, packaging, distribution, storage, and end-use of hydrogen when suggesting a "hydrogen economy."It is also shown that for stationary electric energy storage, fuel cell electrolyzers could be feasible. Zero-tailpipeemissionvehicles are compared. The battery electric vehicle has thehighest electrical efficiency, but other requirements implythat plug-in hybrids or fuel cell hybrids might be a betteroption in some types of vehicles. Finally, a simplified exampleis applied to the overall results and used to discuss the needsand nature of an energy system based on intermittent energysources.
