  • Viewing oneself as a capable person - experiences of professionals working with older Finnish immigrants
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 31:4, s. 759-767
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2016 Nordic College of Caring Science. The proportion of older immigrants in the population is expected to increase in Sweden. Research indicates that older immigrants face the double burden of frailty, caused by a weaker health status, and the immigration process. Health promotion interventions can be used to prevent frailty and support healthy ageing in this population. Healthcare professionals are a crucial part of health promotion and the present study aimed to explore healthcare professionals' experiences of health in context of daily life among older immigrants to and provide a basis for the development of a health promotion intervention targeted at older immigrants. Four focus group discussions were conducted with professionals who worked with home-dwelling older people from Finland, currently living in Sweden. Participants represented a variety of healthcare professions. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The healthcare professionals perceived that health in daily life was (i) connected to the view of oneself as a capable person and (ii) participants strove to maintain their own origin. The findings highlighted that when planning for health promotion interventions for older immigrants, the point of departure should be to recognise the person as a person and the background of immigration is not the first issue to address. Therefore, a person-centred health promotion intervention is recommended to open a dialogue between healthcare professionals and older immigrants, so that a common view of the intervention can be reached.

  • The effects of high alkali impregnation and oxygen delignification of softwood kraft pulps on the yield and mechanical properties
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : De Gruyter Open Ltd. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 37:2, s. 223-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated whether the yield improvement after high alkali impregnation (HAI) is maintained after oxygen delignification and whether the potential of oxygen delignification to increase the mechanical properties is affected by high alkali impregnation. The yield improvement achieved by high alkali impregnation (1 %) was preserved after oxygen delignification, particularly of glucomannan. The total fiber charge and swelling increased after oxygen delignification regardless of the type of impregnation in the cooking step. The tensile index improvement obtained by oxygen delignification was retained if this was preceded by high alkali impregnation. The stiffness index was higher and elongation slightly lower after HAI impregnation than after a standard (REF) impregnation. Fibers obtained through high alkali impregnation seem to be slightly less deformed and slightly wider than fibers obtained after a standard impregnation.

  • The impact of bleaching on the yield of softwood kraft pulps obtained by high alkali impregnation : Bleaching and high alkali impregnation impact
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : De Gruyter Open Ltd. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 37:4, s. 593-608
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High alkali impregnation (HAI) increases the total yield of softwood pulps following kraft cooking. This yield improvement is also maintained after oxygen delignification. This study evaluates how bleaching with either chlorine dioxide or hydrogen peroxide affects the final yield of samples obtained with standard and HAI. The chemical composition, viscosity, brightness, mechanical and morphological properties were studied. Compared to cooking after standard impregnation the yield improvement achieved by HAI was preserved in both types of bleaching sequences (2 % units for chlorine dioxide and 4 % units for hydrogen peroxide). The introduction of charged groups into the cellulose fibers was higher with hydrogen peroxide bleaching than with chlorine dioxide however, no significant impact was seen on the swelling or mechanical properties. The brightness was higher for the pulps bleached with chlorine dioxide compared with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide bleaching resulted in similar brightness development for both standard and HAI. Fibers bleached with chlorine dioxide had the highest curl index (16-17 %) compared to the fibers bleached with hydrogen peroxide (15 %). © 2022 the author(s)

  • Family members' experiences with intensive care unit diaries when the patient does not survive
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 32:1, s. 233-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to explore how family members experienced the use of a diary when a relative does not survive the stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).METHOD: A qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach was used. Nine participants who read/wrote eight diaries in total were interviewed. The collected data were analysed using a hermeneutic technique inspired by Geanellos.FINDINGS: The analysis revealed an overall theme 'the diary was experienced as a bridge connecting the past with the future', which was a metaphor referring to the temporal aspect where there was the period with the diary up until the patient's death and then the postbereavement period. The diary contributed to both a rational and emotional understanding of the death of the patient and disclosed glimmers of light that still existed before the illness deteriorated. Further, the diary bridged the space between family members themselves and between family and nursing staff. It helped to maintain a feeling of togetherness and engagement in the care of the patient which family members found comforting.CONCLUSION: Family members of nonsurvivors had a need to have the ICU time explained and expressed. The diary might work as a form of 'survival kit' to gain coherence and understanding; to meet their needs during the hospital stay; and, finally, to act as a bereavement support by processing the death of the patient.

  • An interpretive phenomenological method for illuminating the meaning of caring relationship
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - 0283-9318. ; :20, s. 45-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is a part of a larger project in which the aim is to illuminate the meaning of the caring relationship between patients and nurses in daily nursing practice. Empirical studies in this area inspired from the interpretive phenomenological method are not commonly used. The aim of this paper is to describe how an interpretive phenomenological method was used to illuminate the meaning of the phenomenon caring relationship in daily nursing practice. Data were collected during 16 nursing care proceedings using participant observation with field notes, and in addition to that two interviews, one patient and one nurse. The interpretation moved back and forth between the whole and the parts in a dialectic process. Initial interpretive understanding of interviews and field notes, meaning units and comprehensive understanding were presented. Themes from the patient's interviews were competence, lack of continuity, strain and vulnerability. Themes from the nurse's interviews were competence and striving. Themes from the field notes were interactions towards a goal. The use of interpretive phenomenology offered an opportunity for learning to understand the meaning of the phenomenon caring relationship in daily nursing practice with both strengths and limitations. This study gave an understanding of the phenomenon through the illumination of the patient's and the nurse's thoughts, feelings and actions in the nursing care proceedings that led to a more profound knowledge about how they together create an encounter through their unique competence.

  • Characterisation of dissolved spruce xylan in kraft cooking
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - Stockholm : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 26:4, s. 380-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Xylan dissolved during kraft cooking and later redeposited on fibre surfaces has been demonstrated to affect paper strength properties. Earlier studies have demonstrated that it is the xylan characteristics, rather than simply the amount of xylan, that influence the strength-enhancing effect of xylan. To use xylan optimally, it is useful to understand xylan’s beneficial characteristics and how cooking conditions affect them. In this study, spruce chips were kraft cooked under various cooking conditions and the xylan in the black liquor was characterized. We found that dissolved spruce xylan had a much higher amount of bound lignin than found in previous studies of xylan dissolved from hardwoods. The ionic strength of the cooking liquor affected the amount of dissolved xylan as well as the uronic acid content of the xylan.

  • Process modifications to obtain a prehydrolysis kraft dissolving pulp with low limiting pulp viscosity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 35:3, s. 332-341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cellulose can be directly dissolved in cold alkali without derivatization. However, this requires low cellulose molecular weight, i. e. low pulp viscosity, preferably below 300 mL g−1. This can be achieved by for example acid or enzymatic hydrolysis of the dissolving pulp. However, it would be beneficial to manufacture pulp with sufficiently low viscosity without an additional treatment stage prior to dissolution. Unit processes in pulping can be operated in such a way as to reduce the molecular weight of cellulose. The approach of the study was to modify the conditions in unit pulping processes in order to obtain a low pulp viscosity of fully bleached prehydrolysis kraft pulp. A high charge of alkali in the oxygen delignification reduced the cellulose molecular weight significantly. Increased temperature, 120 °C compared to 98 °C, had also a significant effect on viscosity. By performing peroxide bleaching at acidic pH, the viscosity could be sufficiently reduced even when oxygen delignification was performed at lower temperature. However, for high brightness, a chlorine dioxide stage is needed.
