  • Reforming heat and power technology course structure using student feedback to enhance learning experience
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education. - : SAGE Publications. - 0306-4190 .- 2050-4586. ; 49:4, s. 410-434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main outcomes of an engineering course should be for the students to achieve the educational goals, enhance their problem solving capabilities and develop essential skills for their future career. In that context, it is important to understand what motivates the students and what helps them develop an engineering mindset. This paper discusses the improvement of a course with the use of student feedback to motivate students and help them develop essential skills. The purpose of the paper is to provide insight into how different aspects of the course are linked to the students’ growth. Different activities have been integrated in the course over the past years. The effect these have on the student motivation to follow the course and develop skills, knowledge and interest in the subject is discussed through the analysis of student performance, student feedback and the experience of the lecturers. The improvements in the course based on the student feedback were received positively by the students, whose learning experience improved, even though the workload of the course was high. Their motivation to successfully complete the course has also increased through the changes in the delivery of the course and the support by the teachers. The combination of student feedback and teacher experience is key for the improvement of a course, while ensuring that the students develop their engineering knowledge. Therefore, the teachers should strike a balance between helping the students find the solution and encouraging them to think on their own in order to develop essential skills.

  • A simplified structural analysis of statically indeterminate continuous thick beams
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education. - : Sage Publications. - 0306-4190 .- 2050-4586. ; 44:4, s. 257-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the study presented here, a simplified exact analytical solution of the problem of indeterminate continuous beams is derived and compared with the numerical solution, finite element. For the analytical method, the structure is divided into a simply supported element with internal support moments. The moments are first calculated with the help of boundary rotation conditions by taking into account both the shear andbending deformations. Second, the deflection functions of the beam members are derived. The results of a two-span continuous beam show that both methods yield an excellent agreement. The advantage of the presented method is that it is simplified, general, not time-consuming, and it can be standardized to this type of structures. Solution methods discussed in this paper can be of interest within the framework of mechanical and civil engineering education in which bending and shear of thick beamsare taught.

  • Teaching embedded control system design of electromechanical devices using a lab-scale smart farming system
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education. - : Sage Publications. - 0306-4190 .- 2050-4586.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the design and monitoring of a lab-scale smart farming system through the integration of control and app designs that can be used for teaching embedded control application to electromechanical systems. A combination of sensors and actuators is used to develop an Arduino-based embedded feedback control system that could be implemented in a smart farming environment. Specifically, we look at controlling electromechanical devices to actuate the fan and water pump to provide the optimal temperature and moisture, respectively, to enhance plant growth in a smart farming setting. The effectiveness of the feedback control is tested by conducting a plant growth experiment. Using garden cress (Lepidium sativum) as a case study, the plant grown in the controlled temperature and moisture settings shows substantially healthier growth compared to the one grown in the non-controlled environment. In addition, an app is designed and developed to transform the Arduino data stream from the sensors into valuable insights that could help the users to monitor and improve the overall crop health. The developed system in this paper enables students to learn integral skills from interdisciplinary engineering fields (e.g. systems, control, mechanical and computer) to solve an agricultural problem.

  • The Shifting Politics of Public Services : Discourses, Arguments, and Institutional Change in Sweden, c. 1620–2000
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Policy History. - 0898-0306 .- 1528-4190. ; 32:4, s. 463-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses the inherent conflict between public and private interest from a long time-perspective, using the example of Sweden from 1620 to 2000. The main argument is that there have been two equally decisive historical shifts in the political discourse on how to organize public services in the past: First, a shift from an early modern patriarchal discourse to a more expansive articulation of publicness during the nineteenth century. Second, a shift toward privatization and deregulation in the late twentieth century. Both these shifts must be considered to fully explain the changing forms of public organization up to the present day. Theoretically, the concept of “publicness” is used to explain the political discourses on the organization of public services. Drawing on three discursive chains, the argument is that the political development was affected by the politicians’ conception of the political community, the form of organization, and by perceptions of values such as equal access and modernity. Our results demonstrate how and why political arguments for or against private service providers have motivated profound changes in the way public services are perceived of and organized.
