  • From senior student to novice worker : learning trajectories in political science, psychology and mechanical engineering.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - Abingdon, England : Routledge. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 31:5, s. 569-586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This longitudinal study focuses on the transition from higher education to working life. Research has hitherto described the transition in rather general terms, and there is still only limited knowledge about how graduates construe themselves as professionals, or how they experience the transition to the sociocultural contexts of working life. In this study, the transition is viewed as a trajectory between different communities of practice. Three different Master’s programmes at Linköping University are focused on and compared: political science, psychology and mechanical engineering. The specific aims are to: (i) identify aspects of identity and knowledge formation as reported by informants, both as...

  • Gender differences in leaders’ crisis communication : a sentiment-based analysis of German higher education leaderships’ online posts
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 49:4, s. 609-622
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined the communication styles of rectors and vice-rectors of German public universities during the COVID-19 pandemic to explore the influence of gender on leadership communication. We collected data from social media and university websites; and analysed the language used to identify transformational, transactional, and servant leadership styles. Our results showed that female leaders demonstrated more positive communication than men and a stronger preference for transformational leadership, while male leaders tended to use a transactional style. Additionally, we found that both male and female leaders exhibited a high degree of empathetic concern for their stakeholders, contributing to the overall positive tone of communication. These findings suggest that gender may play a role in how university leaders communicate during times of crisis, highlighting the importance of inclusive and compassionate leadership in higher education.

  • A Societal Perspective on Self-employment – Sweden as an example
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 46:7, s. 1436-1448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • European Union policies emphasise the importance of entrepreneurship and self-employment to maintain economic growth, a solution influenced by the USA and research from schools of business. There are expectations of higher education graduates that they are innovative, will start businesses and will employ others. However, transferring a solution from one country to another may not be as simple as that. This study questions the recommendations made in EU policies which mainly focus on how to support individuals to become self-employed. Extensive data from the Swedish population registry of approximately 90,000 tertiary-educated people, all born in the mid-1970s, is used to analyse the extent to which this group became self-employed. Results show that societal and cultural differences need to be considered when creating such policies.

  • Broadening Recruitment to Higher Education through the Admission System - Gender and Class Perspectives
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 32:1, s. 97-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alternative entrance routes into higher education have been established in Sweden in order to facilitate the entrance of under-represented groups of students. The question is whether or not the additional entrance possibilities have served their purpose and, if so, to what extent. This is a longitudinal study using register data on one whole cohort, with the aim to follow these individuals’ educational careers up to university matriculation. The analyses simultaneously consider effects of gender and class. Results show that upper middle-class men are most successful in utilising every one of the additional entrance possibilities. The additional entrance possibilities have increased class bias in higher education even more, and the Swedish Scholastic Assessment Test, in particular, is an important contributor to this bias.

  • Intuition—the way to meaningful knowledge
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 27:4, s. 431-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can we create conditions for higher education which develop a student’s ability to acquire meaningful knowledge and take actions that carry the stamp of reality? How can we create conditions where the students develop the capacity to do their very best, even in a changing, complicated and unforeseen situation? This article emphasises the role of intuition in the learning process where rational knowing alone does not suffice. To my epistemological suppositions of different aspects of intuition I attach some practical, didactic examples applied to a university course in psychology. I deal with knowledge that is complex, problematising, personal, empathetic, strategic, and in a real-life context.

  • Student support and tuition fee systems in comparative perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 46:11, s. 2152-2166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to outline a new approach to the comparative analysis of student finance systems based on social rights, an approach widely applied in other areas of social policy. It focuses on rights codified in national legislation and financed by central governments, and the collection of indicators measuring formal eligibility and entitlements using model family analyses techniques. We illustrate the usefulness of the approach by exploring the relationship between the generosity and the degree of low-income targeting of student support in 21 OECD countries. The results show that student support is less generous in countries that concentrate benefits on students from low-income families.
