    • Life and Death at Hierapolis. Norwegian excavations in a Hellenistic–Roman– Byzantine town in Asia Minor From 2007 to 2015 the University of Oslo, invited by The Italian Archaeological Mission at Hierapolis in Phrygia, conducted archaeological research in the North-East Necropolis at Hierapolis. The aim of the project was to document all visible tombs and sarcophagi of the necropolis and excavate selected tomb areas and tombs. The research, including osteological, DNA- and isotope-analyses, investigated the life of the inhabitants over a long period of time (ca. 100–1300 A.C.) with reference to tomb architecture, landscape perception, organization, entrepreneurship, ritual practices, genetic relations and origins, demography, health, sickness, diets, and individual movement patterns. Many of the aims are answered in the article, here shall only be mentioned two important discoveries: cremation has been documented as late as the 5th/6th centuries A.C., in periods of crisis perhaps used to signal pagan opposition to imposed Christian practices; the life conditions in the Roman/ Early Byzantine period were much better than in that of the Middle Byzantine period.

  • In: Viking. - : University of Oslo Library. - 0332-608X .- 2535-2660. ; 82, s. 153-172
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article is based on letters addressed to Arthur Nordén (1891–1965), from his Norwegian colleaguesAnton Willhelm Brøgger (1884–1951) and Sverre Marstrander (1910–1986) during the Nazi occupation ofNorway, which lasted from 9 April 1940 to 8 May 1945. The letters provide unique historical insights intoBrøgger’s and Marstrander’s activities during the war and reveal how they were engaging with Swedisharchaeological colleagues during the Nazi occupation of Norway. While there is no doubt the relationshipbetween archaeology and Nazism during the Second World War is a complex issue, and one that has beenaddressed by a number of researchers (e.g. Nordenborg Myhre 1984, 2002; Hagen 2002), these lettersreflect particular solidarity between Swedish and Norwegian colleagues. They act as aging photographscapturing unique insight into personal experience and agencies. The expressed solidarity in words andactions strengthened existing collegiality and friendships. The letters add to a more nuanced understandingof the history of our discipline.

  • 2017
  • In: Viking. - Oslo : University of Oslo Library. - 0332-608X .- 2535-2660. ; 80, s. 25-38
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In order to show its potential, this article introduces a non-intuitive chronological Bayesian analysis of the pre Roman Iron Age settlement site at Askim Church in Østfold, Norway. The archaeological background is provided by an article by Grethe Bjørkan Bukkemoen (2015). The calibration program used to perform the Bayesian analyses is BCal (Buck m.fl. 1999). The analysis suggests that the settlement commences in the early part of the 3rd c. BCE and comes to an end in the early part of the 1st BCE. Presently, its continuation during the Roman Iron Age is unknown. The main part of the analysis concerns the dating of the houses 1:1 and 1:2 which overlap each other – House 1:1 being the older of the two. The time gap between the two buildings seems too large to be filled by the adjacent House 2, which is younger than House 1:1 and older than House 1:2. In the discussion the chronological analysis is used to corroborate and develop Bukkemoen’s discussion on the pre Roman Iron Age farm house as a social agent. It is suggested that the pre Roman Iron Age house, which initially is determined by the subsistence landscape, is replaced by the late pre Roman Iron Age house, which in its turn defines the subsistence landscape.

  • Brunstad i Stokke, Vestfold – Et bosettingsområde fra rundt 6000 f.Kr., med spor etter gjentatte besøk, grav og deponeringer
  • 2019
  • In: Viking. - : University of Oslo Library. - 0332-608X .- 2535-2660. ; 82, s. 33-62
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents the results from the investigation of two Mesolithic sites, lok. 24 and lok. 25, at Brunstad in Stokke, south of Tønsberg in Vestfold, Southeast Norway. At their time of use the two sites, separated only by a rocky outcrop, were situated by a cove on a small island in the archipelago of the Oslo Fjord. A total of c. 16,000 artefacts, predominantly of flint, were recorded, as well as c. 60 hearths. Radiocarbon dates witness to repeated stays on this island between c. 6400 and 5600 cal. BC. Towards the south lok. 24 was delimited by a small marsh, which also existed at the time when the Brunstad sites were inhabited. Four complete and two fragmented stone adzes found directly in the wetland, may indicate deliberate (ritual) depositions. The find of a decorated, broken sandstone plate from the northern edge of the wetland might strengthen such an interpretation. On lok. 25 an inhumation was uncovered. In a carefully stone-lined grave-pit, an adult individual had been deposited with flexed hip and knees. The grave, dated to c. 5900 BC, is the first recorded Mesolithic grave in East Norway, and one of very few Mesolithic graves from Norway overall. The grave and traces of other ritual actions are discussed in relation to the settlement site as well as in a wider Scandinavian context.
