  • A revision of the genus Crocuta (Mammalia, Hyaenidae)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Palaeontographica. Abteilung A, Palaozoologie, Stratigraphie. - : E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung. - 0375-0442. ; 322:1-4, s. 1-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genus Crocuta evolved in Africa no later than 4 Ma and dispersed from that continent between 2.5 and 2 Ma. At its peak in the late Pleistocene, Crocuta had a geographic distribution that encompassed most of the Old World, except for the northernmost parts of Siberia. Herein, we describe new material of Crocuta from Africa, review the fossil record of the genus in the rest of the world, and revise its species-level taxonomy on the basis of metric and morphological data. We conclude that the genus comprises at least seven extinct species in addition to the extant C. crocuta and that the fossil record includes a number of transitional specimens that cannot be classified to species. Extinct African species are C. venustula (synonyms: C. dietrichi, C. dbaa; early Pliocene – early Pleistocene), C. ultra (early – middle Pleistocene), and C. eturono (late Pliocene). Asian species are C. honanensis (early Pleistocene) and C. ultima (middle – late Pleistocene), possibly with an unnamed species in the early Pleistocene of India and Pakistan. European species are C. intermedia (middle Pleistocene) and C. spelaea (middle – late Pleistocene).

  • Ctenodactylid rodents (Rodentia, Ctenodactylidae) from the early Oligocene Nanpoping fauna of Lanzhou Basin, Northwest China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Palaeontographica. Abteilung A, Palaozoologie, Stratigraphie. - : Schweizerbart. - 0375-0442. ; 326:1-6, s. 151-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ctenodactylid rodents prospered during the Paleogene in East and Central Asia, and due to their high diversification, they are important for biostratigraphic correlations. Here, we present new and diverse material from the late early Oligocene Nanpoping mammal fauna of the Lower Member of the Xianshuihe Formation from the Lanzhou Basin, Central China. Nine species -Tataromys plicidens, Tataromys sigmodon, Tataromys minor, Yindirtemys ulantatalensis, Yindirtemys shevyrevae, Alashania tengkoliensis, Karakoromys decessus, ?Euryodontomys ampliatus and Helanshania deserta -were recognized and described here in detail, the latter five species for the first time from early Oligocene Nanpoping fauna of the Lanzhou Basin. For the Lanzhou Basin, ctenodactylids show the maximum richness in the early Oligocene and have a comparatively high diversity compared with other contemporaneous faunas until the abrupt decline at the late Oligocene, with only Yindirtemys left. Ctenodactylid diversification in the early Oligocene may be related to the semi-arid climate with episodes of higher precipitation, and the following niche partitioning.

  • The “Homotherium” from Langebaanweg and the origin of Homotherium
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Palaeontographica. Abteilung A, Palaozoologie, Stratigraphie. - 0375-0442. ; 227, s. 123-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Craniodental and postcranial material from Langebaanweg, Cape Province, South Africa identified as or associated with Homotherium is described. Parts of this material have been described as the earliest Homotherium, but it is here concluded that the material shares no apomorphic traits with Homotherium and is better referred  to Amphimachairodus sp, indet. The earliest Homotherium known to date comes from the Odessa Catacombs, Ukraine or the Lonyumun Member, Koobi Fora Formation, Kenya, both dated slightly older than 4 Ma. Despite suggestions to the contrary, there remains  a substantial morphological gap between Homotherium and its progenitors.
