  • Prorocentrum micans promote and Skeletonema tropicum disfavours persistence of the pathogenic bacteria Vibrio parahaemolyticus
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences. - : National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR). - 0379-5136 .- 0975-1033. ; 42:6, s. 729-733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a common pathogen causing food poisoning with lethal results. Composition of phytoplankton communities could be a possible source affecting survival, persistence and proliferation of V. parahaemolyticus in marine environments. In this experiment an environmental strain of V. parahaemolyticus, isolated from the southwest coast of India, was exposed to one dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum micans and one diatom, Skeletonema tropicum. Results show that P. micans facilitate and S. tropicum prevents persistence of V. parahaemolyticus.

  • The relationship between variation of phytoplankton species composition and physico-chemical parameters in northern coastal waters of Mumbai, India.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Indian Journal of Geo marine Sciences. - 0379-5136 .- 0975-1033. ; 44:5, s. 673-684
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Present study consists the relationship between phytoplankton community structure and physico-chemical parameters in Mahim Bay and Manori Creek. Altogether, 230 phytoplankton taxa comprising 131 diatoms, 82 dinoflagellates and 17 marine flagellates were recorded. Centric diatoms were the most common taxa, followed by thecatedinoflagellates. Seasonal blooms of diatoms and dinoflagellates occurred in the summer and at the end of the south-west monsoon. Additionally, we here report the f irst finding of two harmful dinoflagellate species, i.e. Pyrodinium bahamense and Dinophysis norvegica , in Indian coastal water. Dinophysis cf. norvegica was observed sporadically at Manori Creek. Except for PO 4 3 - , levels of major nutrients were low at both sites. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the relative abundance of some species was influenced by heav y metals and salinity. Dinophysis , Protoperidinium , Ceratium and Leptocylindrus were inversely correlated to salinity, whereas some of the marine flagellates (e.g., Chrysochromulia , Heterocapsa , Heterosigma and Fibrocapsa ) and dinoflagellates (e.g., Noctiluca and Amphidinium ) were seen alongside higher levels of heavy metals, such as Fe, Ni, Cu and Cd.
