  • Socioeconomic determinants and metabolic syndrome : Results from the Isfahan Healthy Heart Program
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Biomedica. - 0392-4203. ; 87:3, s. 291-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing in Iran. We assessed the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and Mets components in the Iranian population. Materi- als and Methods: The sample for this study comprised a random cross-section of men and women from two province districts who participated in the Isfahan Healthy Heart Program (IHHP) in 2007. Each participant completed a questionnaire, underwent anthropometric testing and blood pressure measurements, and pro- vided a blood sample. Mets was defined based on ATPIII criteria. Several SES dimensions, such as education, occupation, and number of children, as well as home, car, and personal computer ownership, were assessed to determine the participant’s SES. Results: A higher-than-average income, car ownership, owning or renting a private home, and having a computer are increasing towards increment in SES. All MetS components were more prevalent in participants defined as having a lower SES, while low HDL levels were more common in participants having an SES II (P>0.001). A multivariate analysis showed that having the lowest SES (I) increased the risk of MetS by 1.72 [1.44-2.07], whereas subjects having an SES III had a 1.23 [1.04-1.47] lower risk for MetS. Conclusions: The relationship between SES and Mets is due largely to behavioural factors, such as practicing unhealthy eating habits. Given the high prevalence of Mets in Iran, we propose that regular health check-ups may be useful in the early detection of the syndrome and, consequently, in the prevention of its effects. In addition, the early detection of MetS may result in the early diagnosis and prevention of car- diovascular diseases. (www.actabiomedica.it)

  • Health promotion in nursing education : Attitudes among nurse students
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Biomedica. - Fidenza : L'Ateneo Parmense. - 0392-4203. ; 86, s. 91-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) European Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery has called for the explicit inclusion and application of health promotion in all nursing curricula. However, research indicates that there are deficiencies in nursing education regarding health promotion in both the theoretical and practical elements of education. Insight into the experiences of European nursing students’ attitudes, positive or negative, about working in health promotion may provide a clue whether health promotion will be regarded as an important task and to what extent it will have priority in different parts of Europe. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare Italian and Swedish nursing students’ attitudes towards health promotion practice on matriculation to nursing school and after a three-year nursing education, and to explore whether attitudes towards health promotion practice correlate with BMI and smoking. Method: The study involved students who started their nursing education in autumn 2009 (n =240). Data were collected via a questionnaire. Results: The results show that the Swedish students had a more positive stance on health promotion than Italian students did. After completion of a three-year nursing education programme, Italian students’ attitudes on health promotion had improved, while no such development was seen in Sweden. Further, no correlation between lifestyle issues and attitudes to health promotion was found. Conclusion: Health promotion in nursing education may have important influence on students’ attitudes and thereby on the quantity and quality of future health promotion practice. © Mattioli 1885.

  • Multi-modality Imaging Evaluation of a Rare and Complex Case of Single Ventricle Physiology; the important role of Cardiac MR
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta bio-medica : Atenei Parmensis. - 0392-4203. ; 93:S1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Congenital heart diseases (CHD) represent a major clinical and diagnostic challenge for correct abnormality identification and subsequent successful therapy; even more challenging is following-up patient health after multiple post-interventional corrections often required in complex cardio-vascular abnormalities. We describe a multi-modality imaging evaluation of a complex congenital cardio-vascular diseases, underlining the relevance of cardiac magnetic resonance to non invasively solve some issues related to postsurgical changes.

  • Vieussens’ ring coronary collateral circulation : a natural bypass history
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Biomedica. - 0392-4203. ; 93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “Vieussens’ ring” or “arterial circle of Vieussens” is a crucial hetero-coronaric pathway, bridging proximal right coronary artery (RCA) and left anterior descending artery (LAD) when a hemodynami-cally stenosis is established in the either of the vessel. In detail such coronary collateral circulation is usually supplied by branches of the conus artery. We present a case of a 62-year-old man who was admitted to our emergency department complaining of chest pain. Coronary angiography showed LAD occlusion at the mid tract with delayed and slight opacification of its distal segment sustained by Vieussens’ ring. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) was subsequently performed which confirmed the presence of such natural bypass and evaluated its relationship with adjacent structures. Imaging, particularly CCTA of-fers a valid tool in assessing the hetero-coronaric collateral vessel. Due to its high spatial resolution it may provide many information about the coronary anatomy by delineating their origin, course and termination. (www.actabiomedica.it).

  • Concomitant invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and aspergillus sinusitis in a patient with acute leukaemia
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Acta bio-medica : Atenei Parmensis. - 0392-4203. ; 77:Suppl 4, s. 23-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A 67 years old male otherwise healthy who had undergone surgery for nasal polyposis ten years earlier was recently diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. During induction treatment the patient developed sino-pulmonary aspergillosis caused byAspergillus flavus. The patient developed severe reactions against amphotericin- B and thereafter Abelcet, whereas he tolerated treatment with AmBisome. Surgery of the nasal cavities was performed whereas surgery of the pulmonary infiltrates was not possible. During subsequent treatment for his leukaemia and long periods of neutropenia, the patient was on AmBisome treatment and there were no signs of progression of the Aspergillus infection. The antifungal treatment was considered to be successful. The patient was referred back to his local hospital and antifungal treatment was switched to oral itraconazole.

  • Comparative study on anti-proliferative potentials of zinc oxide and aluminium oxide nanoparticles in colon cancer cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acta bio-medica : Atenei Parmensis. - : Mattioli 1885. - 0392-4203. ; 90:2, s. 241-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Use of commercial products containing nanoparticles formulated from zinc oxide (ZnO) and aluminium oxide (Al2O-3) has increased significantly. These nanoparticles are widely used as ingredient in cosmetics, and also in food packaging industry although their toxicity status is yet to be studied. Here, we aimed to explore the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and aluminium oxide nanoparticles (ANPs) in human HT29 colon cancer cell line.
