  • Giorgio Agamben and the spatialities of the camp: An introduction
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B. Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0467 .- 0435-3684. ; 88:4, s. 363-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Italian political philosopher Giorgio Agamben's conclusion that the camp has replaced the city as the biopolitical paradigm of the West is as difficult to digest as it is easy to see how it responds to contemporary political tendencies in the world today. In this introduction to this theme issue on Giorgio Agamben and the spatialities of the camp, a detailed exposition emulating the structure of Agamben's seminal book Homo Sacer: is conducted, tracing the genealogies of Agamben's ideas and commenting on his swiftly enhanced importance in the social sciences and humanities. The introduction concludes by outlining some possible research fields in human geogrphy where much insight could be gained if Agamben's work is given more detailed consideration.

  • Beyond Space. Border Making in European Integration, the case of Ireland
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B. Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0467 .- 0435-3684. ; 85:3, s. 123-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current ambition to enlarge the European Union (EU) from fifteen to twenty-seven member states has brought to the fore questions about European integration and its overarching aim. On 7 June, 2001, the Irish people decided not to ratify the Nice Treaty. However, the Irish 'no' was not considered to be an expression of political resentment that could impinge on further development of European integration, but rather a sign of an information deficit. According to the EU top down rhetoric, the Irish people had not yet realised what it means to be, act and think as Europeans in Europe. The Irish referendum serves in this respect as a crucial juncture which brings to the surface otherwise veiled discursive power mechanisms that frame sociopolitical action within the EU discourse. This article analyses EU transcripts and speeches, as well as Irish newspaper articles prior to and after the referendum in order to depict these many-faceted mechanisms surrounding the border-making processes in European integration. It is argued that the Irish referendum, rather than altering the process of European integration in any significant way, has served the endeavours to fix a consolidated European Space. In other words, the European space that we live in is conceived of as if it could be presupposed beyond space.

  • Labour and landscapes: The political economy of landesque capital in nineteenth century tanganyika
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B. Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0467 .- 0435-3684. ; 89B:3, s. 233-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a long-term and global perspective irrigated and terraced landscapes, landesque capital, have often been assumed to be closely associated with hierarchical political systems. However, research is accumulating that shows how kinship-based societies (including small chiefdoms) have also been responsible for constructing landesque capital without population pressure. We examine the political economy of landesque capital through the intersections of decentralized politics and regional economies. A crucial question guiding our research is why some kinship-based societies chose to invest their labour in landesque capital while others did not. Our analysis is based on a detailed examination of four relatively densely populated communities in late pre-colonial and early colonial Tanzania. By analysing labour processes as contingent and separate from political types of generalized economic systems over time we can identify the causal factors that direct labour and thus landscape formation as a process. The general conclusion of our investigation is that landesque investments occurred in cases where agriculture was the main source of longterm wealth flow irrespective of whether or not hierarchical political systems were present. However, while this factor may be a necessary condition it is nota sufficient cause. In the cases we examined, the configurations of world-systems connections and local social and economic circumstances combined to either produce investments in landesque capital or to pursue short-term strategies of extraction.

  • Towards a conceptual framework of place attractiveness: a migration perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0467 .- 0435-3684. ; 92:1, s. 97-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedThe attractiveness of places is currently gaining a high policy salience in policymakers’ efforts to draw mobile capital. Yet, while there are a growing number of empirical studies considering the migration of people and the attractiveness of places, there is an acute lack of conceptual understanding of the phenomena that hamper discussions between researchers and policymakers. This article suggests a conceptual framework whereby place attractiveness can be better understood from a migration perspective. The empirical material for this article mainly draws upon interviews that were carried out with migrants who seem to have considered at least one alternative in their search for a suitable destination. The conceptual framework, which comprises the main result of the article, illustrates that needs, demands and preferences are central and empirically identifiable components for properly appreciating place attractiveness in a migration context. It is argued that the attractiveness of places increases with the successive fulfilment of these factors; but on the other hand, the more factors a migrant seeks to fulfil in his or her destination selection, the fewer the choice possibilities. The article moreover shows how a life-course perspective needs to be integrated in such analyses since not only do migrants’ needs, demands and preferences depend upon their current life-course phase situation, their resources and constraints are also likely to correlate with the lifecourse. The conceptual framework can be used to ease understanding between researchers and policymakers in issues related to place attractiveness and the migration of relatively affluent migrants with choice opportunities.
