Two-phonon octupole excitation in 146Gd

- The excited states in 146Gd have been re-investigated with the 144Sm(α,2n) reaction using a modern Ge γ-ray array including a polarimeter. Amongst the non-yrast states populated in this reaction we have identified the aligned 6 + member of the two-phonon octupole quartet from the observation of the E3 branching to the one phonon 3 - state. Our results represent the first observation of a 6 +→ 3 -→0 + E3 cascade in an even-even nucleus.

- Gamma-ray transitions from excited states in Te-106 have been identified using the recoil decay tagging technique. The experiment which was the reaction Fe-54(Fe-54,2n)Te-106* was performed at the JYFL accelerator facility at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The production cross section was estimated at 25 nb, a new limit for in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy. A tentative level structure for the ground state band of Te-106 is proposed.

- The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a 238U beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17 and I=21.5, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single-particle and collective motions, a much improved description of the experimental results can be obtained. In addition, new results on the structure of 208Fr, 211Ra and 216Ac are reported.

Lifetimes of high-spin states in 74Kr

- High-spin states in Kr-74 were studied using the 40Ca(40Ca,alpha 2p)74Kr fusion evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV with Gammasphere and Microball and at a beam energy of 185 MeV with Euroball and Isis muli-detector arrays. Lifetimes of the high-spin states for the ground state band and the favoured negative parity band have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The deduced transition quadrupole moments show a marginal decrease as a function of spin, suggesting that the rotational bands do not terminate at the maximum spin I=Imax.

- γ-ray transitions in the neutron deficient 190,197Po nuclei have been identified. The yrast band of 190Po has been extended up to a spin and parity of 14+ and is found to display similar systematic behaviour to isotones 186Hg and 188Pb above the 4+ level, thus confirming its prolate nature. In 197Po the band built upon the 13/2+ isomer has been extended up to a spin and parity of 33/2+, while the non-yrast side-band has been observed for the first time. The behaviour of 197Po is found to be similar to that of the nearby even-mass isotopes, which is consistent with the model in which the i13/2 neutron is weakly coupled to the states in the even-even core.

- Preliminary lifetime values have been measured for a number of near-yrast states in the odd-A transitional nuclei Cd-107 and Pd-103. The reaction used to populate the nuclei of interest was Mo-98(C-12, 3nx alpha)Cd-107, Pd-103, with the beam delivered by the tandem accelerator of the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at an incident beam energy of 60 MeV. Our experiment was aimed at the investigation of collective excitations built on the unnatural parity, v h(11/2) orbital, specifically by measuring the B(E2) values of decays from the excited levels built on this intrinsic structure, using the Doppler Recoil Distance Method. We report lifetimes and associated transition probabilities for decays from the 15/2(-) and the 19/2(-) states in Cd-107 and the first measurement of the 15/2- state in Pd-103. These results suggest that neither a simple rotational or vibrational interpretation is sufficient to explain the observed structures.

- Two-proton removal in 17Ne at energies from 60 to 710 A MeV in the carbon target is studied in the eikonal approximation of the Glauber model. The excitation of the 15O core fragment is taken into account. The calculated proton removal cross section in 17Ne, the 17Ne and 15O interaction cross sections are compared to the available experimental data.
