  • Health information seeking behaviour during exceptional times : A case study of Persian-speaking minorities in Finland
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 44:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Literature on minorities' health-related information seeking shows that minorities, like non-minorities, require access to accurate and timely information, but they also need information in a range of languages and from a variety of sources. Health-related information seeking behaviour of Persian-speaking minorities living in Finland, explicitly focused on the COVID-19 pandemic situation, was investigated. Eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the extended Longo Health Information Model was used as a theoretical lens for analysing the data. The results point to several factors that can improve the outcome of minorities' health-related information seeking behaviours and activities, such as providing information related to their personal health, a deeper understanding of factors influencing the quality of health conditions at the individual or household level and broadcasting the latest health-related information in different languages and emphasize the needs for mental health-related information and services. The findings suggest that not only healthcare providers, immigration officials, and policymakers should be aware of the specific health-related information that minorities require, seek, and use during times of adversity, but also the extent to which how the identified factors influence the process of minorities' seeking health-related information.

  • Negotiating the role of sources : Educators' conceptions of credibility in participatory media
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 34:3, s. 169-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Participatory media are commonly used in today's society for a variety of purposes. The credibility associated with these media is sometimes contested, and their acceptance into school practices has been debated. Focus group interviews with teachers and librarians in upper secondary schools in Sweden are used to investigate conceptions and experiences of activities involving the critical evaluation of participatory media, with a particular focus on Wikipedia. Three themes are addressed. The first concerns how the teaching of the critical evaluation of sources is organized and comanaged between teachers and librarians. The second describes educators' experiences of print versus digital media, and their worry because students have problems negotiating the information architecture of print media. The third theme deals with conceptions of the credibility of Wikipedia. Four conceptions of credibility are identified: credibility is associated with the control and stability of a source; it is considered to be strengthened when several sources support a claim; it is viewed as situational and partial, rather than absolute; and it is associated with a multiplicity of voices and democratic forms of production. These findings may be used to inform educational activities around credibility and authority in schools by raising self-awareness among educators of various ways to talk about the credibility of sources with both colleagues and students.

  • Archaeological information-making activities according to field reports
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 44:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accounts of how scholarly information is produced are crucial for understanding and using the information yet they are often criticized for being incomprehensive or even non-existent. This article aims to increase the understanding of how scholarly information-making is conceived and documented by information-makers. By analyzing how a set of archaeological field reports describe different aspects of the information-making activities (cf. Activity Theory) pertaining to the research documented in the reports, the study suggests that scholars might have a tendency to focus on reporting tools, outcomes and physical location of activities while descriptions of especially rules/norms, community factors and division of labour are rare and expected to be known tacitly. The findings suggest also that the descriptions of information-making activities become comprehensible in relation to their related activities. Therefore, an increased emphasis on explicating their underpinning social factors and how activity systems and their elements link to other activity systems could improve the comprehensiveness of documentation and decrease the need of tacit contextual knowledge.

  • Holistic information behavior and the perceived success of work in organizations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 40:1, s. 18-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surprisingly little is known about the relationship between perceived work success and information behavior. This study shows that holistic (versus organization-centric) information behavioral preferences are related to interaction and exchange oriented perceptions of the success of work. The findings were drawn from a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) based analysis of the survey data (N = 305) collected from employees of a large multinational corporation. The findings suggest that holistic information behavior is more strongly related to social measures of success, whereas their association with quantitative measures tends to be lower. From the perspective of information behavior research, the findings suggest that holism seems to be a similar factor to, for instance, task complexity or personality, which influences human information behavior and, for instance, perceptions of relevance. From a practical perspective, the study suggests that the promotion of specific facets of measuring success and patterns of information behavior can be used to influence the orientation of working between centrifugality and openness.

  • LAM professionals' roles and attitudes to user participation in Norway and Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 45:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies provide insights into library, archive and museum (LAM) professionals' attitudes toward user participation, yet they do not address how the diversity of roles LAM professionals assume may influence their attitudes toward participation. The reported findings based on a questionnaire to LAM professionals in Norway and Sweden indicate that user participation is viewed differently depending on how the professionals perceive their roles in relation to those of other professions. Analysis of the underlying relationships between the ques-tionnaire respondents' perceptions and attitudes identifies three subject positions with associated interpretative repertoires: power sharing, outsourcing and engaging experts. Additional analysis using a four-quadrant model of user engagement that differentiates between bottom-up and top-down approaches and between areas of orga-nizational activity suggests that the respondents primarily see themselves as experts within their respective fields and have yet to relinquish this role in favor of a more bottom-up approach to user participation.

  • Researchers’ use of social network sites : a scoping review
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 38:3, s. 224-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study is a scoping review of 80 research articles in LIS and related fields (2004-2014) on the use of social network sites by researchers. The results show that social network sites are used as part of scholarly life, yet with disciplinary differences. It is also shown that the area lacks methodological, theoretical and empirical coherence and theoretical stringency. The most salient strands of research (General uptake, Outreach, Special tools/cases, Assessing impact, Practices/new modes of communication) are mapped and ways to improve research in the field are identified. This provides a first step towards a more comprehensive understanding of the roles of social network sites in scholarship.

  • Performance evaluation as a tool for strategic decisions about serving visually impaired users : The case of the Lithuanian Library for the Blind
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 38:2, s. 161-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complexity of serving diverse and dispersed target audiences of visually impaired persons suggest that there is a need to analyse the performance of libraries for the blind. This issue is currently neglected in library and information science research. Library managers and policy-makers can employ performance data for developing new strategies for service delivery and sustainability. The balanced scorecard and historical benchmarking approaches were applied to analyse the performance of the Lithuanian Library for the Blind (LLB) in 2008-2012. The concepts of strategic issues and strategies were employed to demonstrate how performance evaluation findings may be used for the purposes of strategic planning. The findings revealed the attractiveness and sufficiency of cultural services, but also the inability of the LLB to reach its target audiences, the inefficiency of internal processes, low use of information resources and electronic services, and a lack of sustainability in organisational learning. A model of service provision in collaboration with public and academic libraries for publishing and distribution of literature in accessible formats was suggested to the LLB. It is in line with the policy and legal decisions necessary for achieving the Library's main goals.

  • The role of curiosity triggers and features in digital literacy training
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 45:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Curiosity and interest may drive engagement in digital literacy programs and contribute to overcoming digital inequalities. Curiosity triggers and features influenced digital literacy training of vulnerable groups of older adults, children from low-income families, and individuals with hearing impairments in Lithuania. A theoretical framework combining psychological and social perspectives helped to observe the phases of interest development and explore factors influencing the transformation of situational curiosity into sustained interest. Qualitative content analysis of data from graphic questionnaires, focus groups, and interviews with participants and trainers revealed that curiosity triggers, including novelty and surprise, fostered engagement, while physical and epistemic curiosity modes played key roles. The study highlights the value of perceived utility in sustaining interest. The results inform instructional design, emphasizing the importance of appealing objects, resources, and social support in promoting digital inclusion and fostering long-term interest in digital technologies for vulnerable populations.

  • Research agenda for social and collaborative information seeking
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 39:2, s. 140-146
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scholars in diverse fields of inquiry have identified the need to expand individual-based information seeking and behavior models and systems to incorporate social as well as collaborative dimensions. However, the research areas of Social Information Seeking (SIS) and Collaborative Information Seeking (CIS) have been largely disconnected from one another despite a few notable attempts to study them under one umbrella. Researchers in these communities have recently realized the value of bringing SIS and CIS together for two main reasons: often it is impossible to separate social and collaborative dimensions in a project; and by considering these two aspects of information seeking, we may be able to support human information behavior in ways not previously possible. A brief synthesis of work in the domains of SIS and CIS is presented here. Then, an integrated view is presented to consider Social and Collaborative Information Seeking (SCIS) as an intersection and extension of SIS and CIS. Benefits of this approach are discussed and the integrated view is used as the basis to present a research agenda that outlines opportunities and challenges unique to SCIS.
