    • The problem of computing probabilistic uncertainty regions for the frequency responses of identified models is studied. A novel method for uncertainty bounding that uses bootstrap is presented and compared to a classical method using estimated covariance information. It is shown that, with bootstrap, it is possible to compute realistic uncertainty regions that closely resemble those obtainable through Monte Carlo simulations.

    • The paper deals with the application of identifiability criteria to mean-value models of turbocharged IC engines. A way of reducing such models to linear regressions using differential algebra is presented. The conditions of global identifiability and persistent excitation are formulated in explicit form for a given set of sensors. It is accompanied with a technique for reducing the set of sensors required for the engine identification. The software tools required are outlined and their complexity is discussed.

    • An optimization approach to Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is considered. The ILC algorithm is formed by minimizing a quadratic criterion in the control error and input signal. A frequency domain interpretation of the derived updating algorithm is given. Experiments carried out on an ABB IRB 1400 are presented.

    • In recent years, the advent of efficient methods for solving linear matrix inequality (LMI) problems has yielded a new interesting class of Lyapunov functions, the piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions, subject to efficient computation. This class has shown promise, e.g. in the stability analysis of hybrid systems. In this paper, we describe one example that we have analyzed in order to investigate how LMI methods and piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions can be used to iteratively synthesize a switched control law in order to obtain an improved decay rate. The example shows that piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions are not sufficient to analyze the decay rate of a piecewise affine system, given that the partitioning used in the Lyapunov function is the same as in the piecewise affine system. As noted in other performance analysis examples, a finer partitioning is needed

    • Zeno hybrid automata are hybrid systems that can exhibit infinitely many discrete transitions in a finite time interval. Such automata arise due to modeling simplifications and may deteriorate simulation efficiency and accuracy considerably. Some basic properties of Zeno hybrid automata are explored. Possible ways to extend a simulation beyond the Zeno time are suggested

    • Simulation based methods have gained interest in the signal processing community. In this article we propose an algorithm to estimate the probability density function of some statistic associated with an identified model in the case of undermodeling. With this algorithm, we are thus able to estimate the variance error of any statistic associated with the model. We also give a simulation example, which shows that the estimates are in very good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

    • We review some features related to the use of prefiltering data for identification. In addition to the well known interplay between noise models and prefilters we discuss how to find a compromise between the need for a noise model, at the same time as having control of the approximation properties of the model. The statistical paradigm tells us to use high order models so that the bias distribution aspect of the prefilter can be neglected. For real data this may however be infeasible. The discussion is illustrated with both simulated and real data.

    • A parameter estimation method for finite-dimensional multivariate linear stochastic systems is presented which is guaranteed to produce valid models close enough to the true underlying model, in a computational time of at most a polynomial order of the system dimension. This is achieved by combining the main features of certain stochastic subspace identification techniques together with sound statistical order estimation methods, matrix Schur restabilization procedures and multivariate covariance fitting, the latter formulated as linear matrix inequality problems. In this paper we make emphasis on the last issues mentioned, and provide an example of the overall performance for a multivariable case.
