  • 2007
  • In: Norsk Antropologisk Tidsskrift. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget. - 0802-7285 .- 1504-2898. ; 18:3-4, s. 253-265
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article describes a bridewealth prestation amongthe Chagga-speaking people of Tanzania. Departingfrom approaches that rely on the notion of reciprocity, the author explores how the prestation per se constitutes, rather than represents, the relationship betweenwife-givers and wife-receivers. By investigating themateriality of the exchanged object, the relationships itforms part of are laid bare, and it is argued that theobject forms part of a reproductive network wherepersons, things and social relationships are mutuallyconstituted. Against this background, materiality andsociality, things and meanings, reality and representation, are interrelated and the problems raised by thenotion of reciprocity are transcended.

  • Technologies of Modern Reindeer Breeding as Technologies of Power in Circumpolar Russia : a Study of Selective Breeding of Evenki Reindeer
  • 2020
  • In: Norsk Antropologisk Tidsskrift. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0802-7285 .- 1504-2898. ; 31:04, s. 249-267
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores how reindeer science in Circumpolar Russia is a field of constitutions of indigenous people and animal subjectivities. It is based on empirical research of selective breeding of the Evenki breed of reindeer in the specialised Soviet literature and in the Reindeer Herding Enterprise in the village of Surinda, Evenki Municipality. Reindeer herding has historically played a significant role for the majority indigenous Evenki people. Neat classification of reindeer into distinctive breeds was completed in Soviet time, when “proper” selective breeding technologies were established. This article looks into some of the basic assumptions about animals, humans, and society that such breed classification and selection methods reveal. I analyse the role of scientific knowledge in the Soviet era to better understand why selective reindeer breeding appears more attractive to state authorities than to support indigenous reindeer husbandry, which has been experiencing a serious crisis since the early 1990s. I explain the local politics of reindeer herding and agricultural science through the contextualisation of the field case within Soviet and contemporary Russian Arctic and indigenous governance, trying to contribute to the broader issue of post-Soviet perceptions of animal husbandry, selective breeding and reindeer.

  • Den tidiga antropologins vetenskapliga gränsbyggande
  • 2010
  • In: Norsk Antropologisk Tidsskrift. - : Norsk antropologisk forening. - 0802-7285 .- 1504-2898. ; 21:2/3, s. 143-155
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • In: Norsk Antropologisk Tidsskrift. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget. - 0802-7285 .- 1504-2898. ; 33:3-4, s. 295-311
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The neighbourhood of Sofielund in Malm. is marked by diversity in terms of its population and its varying architecture and types of housing. It is also marked by social divisions, including poverty, housing exploitations and criminality. Over time, a large number of interventions have been implemented to better the situation. The interventions are, among other things, inspired by the Business Improvement District (BID) model and include efforts to enhance social cohesion through a strategy of “opening up Sofielund” through creating “meeting-places.” The article provides an analysis of the lived experiences of residents in Sofielund, and shows how policy efforts on “social cohesion” and the creation of meeting-places are perceived by residents. The presentation argues that while meeting-places aim to even out tensions and strengthen social cohesion, they may also reproduce existent power relations and increase tensions. Consequently, the article shows that strategies of opening up places can have the unintended consequences of closing down for buildings, people, and social relations. The article focuses on how inequality and exclusion unfold in inclusive spaces, and entail different forms of polarisation based on “us” and “them”.

  • 2000
  • In: Norsk antropologisk tidsskrift. - 0802-7285. ; 11:1, s. 4-19
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 1990
  • In: Norsk antropologisk tidsskrift. - 0802-7285. ; 1:1, s. 79-81
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this commentary the idea of local culture is questioned. It is argued that localness is relative, and that this should be clearly recognized. On the other hand, local can also be used in a more basic sense. Phenomena can be local simply by virtue of existing in a specific geographical setting. The mere use of the word local does not therefore imply that the phenomena described represent a specific local culture.
