  • Climate change and ecological literacy in Ghassān Shibārū’s climate fiction novel "2022"
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Arabic and Islamic studies. - 0806-198X. ; 23:1, s. 17-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change has been attracting increasing attention as one of the most significant consequences of the anthropogenic global warming and fictional narratives have increasingly been involved in engaging human imagination on the topic of climate change. Climate fiction, or cli-fi, is the umbrella term that designates fiction with climate change as its main theme. Climate fiction has been primarily published in English so far and narratives specifically problematising anthropogenic climate change are still quite rare in the Arabic literary landscape. In this regard, the novel 2022 by the Lebanese author Ghassān Shibārū constitutes an interesting case, given that it is authored in Arabic but displays several of the characteristics typical of the cli-fi genre. This paper aims at providing an analysis of Shibārū’s novel 2022 as representative of Arabic climate fiction. The main features of the climate fiction genre and its relationship to the scholarship of ecocriticism are first outlined. An overview of the environment as a theme in Arabic literature and Arabic literary studies then follows. The paper subsequently presents the concept of ecological literacy, which constitutes the theoretical framework for the analysis of the characters in the novel. After a synopsis of the plot, the characters are analysed and discussed and the novel itself is examined as instance of climate fiction as intended by the Anglophone definition of the genre. The authors argue that the purpose of the novel is didactic, since, rather than narrating a fictional story, the novel exploits a fictional story in order to spread awareness of global warming and climate change.

  • Egyptian Dystopias of the 21st Century : A new literary trend?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Arabic and Islamic studies. - : University of Oslo Library. - 0806-198X. ; 21, s. 79-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the first two decades of the 21st century an increasing amount of narratives termed as Arabic dystopian fiction appeared on the Arabic literary scene, with a greater part authored by Egyptian writers. However, what characterises/marks a work as a dystopia? This paper investigates the dystopian nature of a selection of Egyptian literary works within the frame of the dystopian narrative tradition. The article begins by introducing the features of the traditional literary dystopias as they will be used in the analysis. It then gives a brief overview of the development of the genre in the Arabic literature. The discussion that follows highlights common elements and identifies specific themes in six Egyptian novels selected for the analysis, thereby highlighting differences and similarities between them and the traditional Western dystopias. The article calls for a categorisation of Arabic dystopian narrative that takes into consideration social, political, historical and cultural factors specific for the Arabic in general, and Egyptian in particular, literary field.

  • The Role of the b-prefix in Gulf Arabic Dialects as a Marker of Future, Intent and/or Irrealis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies. - 0806-198X. ; 8, s. 26-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents arguments for a re-analysis of the b-prefix in Gulf Arabic dialects. Similar to several other dialects, Gulf Arabic possesses a b-prefix that is inserted before the p-stem (prefix form) of the verb. However, the Gulf Arabic b-prefix differs substantially from the one encountered in other Arabic dialects. According to most previous studies, the Gulf Arabic b-prefix encodes future tense or intentive mood or a combination of these. Based on a thorough survey of the use of this particle in modern speech, I suggest that it is used in Gulf Arabic today as a generalized marker of the irrealis mood rather than being limited to function as a future/intentive marker. Futurity is one - but not the only or necessarily the most important one - of its connotations. Meanwhile, another marker, rāḥ, emerges as an obvious future marker in some parts of the dialectal area.

  • From Theocracy to democracy? Towards secularisation and individualisation in the policy of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Arabic and Islamic studies. - : Alex Metcalf. - 0806-198X. ; 8, s. 85-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a common assumption that ‘Islam’ has an inherent opposition be-tween the sacred and the secular which obstructs the secularisation process witnessed in western societies. This study argues that Weber’s notion of Protestant religion as a driving force in the rationalisation of society might be an indicator of how political Islam in itself in the end might lead to a dif-ferentiation between the religious and the secular sphere; an individualisa-tion and a secularisation of the Islamic message and thereby to a privatisation of religion. The political experience of the Muslim Brother-hood in Jordan is analysed in view of western theories of secularisation, particularly Steve Bruce’s study on secularisation in British society. As Islamists work within the democratic system there seems to be a transfor-mation from being a radical organisation towards becoming ‘just another comfortable denomination’, as expressed in Bruce’s claim that ‘the sectar-ian project’ is ‘largely self-defeating’.

  • In the Presence of Absence: Mahmoud Darwish's Testament
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies. - 0806-198X. ; 8:2008, s. 11-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish is well known for his intertextual playfulness and inventiveness, and indeed, in one of his last books, Fi Hadrat al-ghiyab (In the Presence of Absence, 2006) he alludes to classical Arabic poetry, the Quran and his own previous oeuvre. Drawing on a celebrated qasida by the Umayyad poet Malik Ibn al-Rayb as his model, Darwish composed this work as a funeral speech for himself. Essentially, it is an oration in prose, but snatches of poetry also appear in a stylistic pattern where rhetorical figures abound. Speaking from the barzakh between life and death, the poet reflects on his wordly existence from cradle to grave. Published less than two years before Darwish death in August 2008, the text has the double character of prediction and testament. The thesis of this article is that the death of the author adds meaning to it not by his absence, but paradoxically, by his increased presence as an unavoidable point of reference and source of identification for the reader.
