- The article «Poesins vanitas» («Poetic vanitas») presents five lyrical examples of the vanitas theme in Western literature, spread out over as many centuries (from the 15th to the 20th). The Spaniard Jorge Manrique’s (1440–79) «Couplets on the Death of His Father» expresses an involvement with the problem of time typical of much Spanish poetry, based on the medieval topic of ubi sunt. In the sonnet «All Is Vanity» by the Schlesian poet Andreas Gryphius (1616 –64), the same Biblical theme is played off against the Baroque fascination with material culture and instantaneous experience. The Swedish poet Viktor Rydberg (1828 –95), for his part, represents nineteenth century idealism, confronting a new sense of existential emptiness and meaninglessness (provoked by recent scientific and technological advances) through recourse to memory and dreaming. By contrast, the poem «Troubled Dreams» by Finno-Swedish Edith Södergran (1892–1923) shatters standard Romantic illusions in its early modernist version of the vanitas trauma. Finally, the German-speaking poet Paul Celan (1920–70), born in (present-day) Romania, gives voice to a post-war experience of utter desolation, perchance, however, relieved by the presence of the beloved.

- A Genealogy of the Subject as Posthumanism avant la lettreIf the constitution of the modern subject is indebted to Descartes’ self-grounding and self-positing of the subject of thought and knowledge, this article discusses how some of the period’s libertines and moralists in the wake of Montaigne articulated a counter-discourse to this dominating form of subjectivity. I argue that they point to a pathway for the modern subject grounded in an art of existence rather than in Descartes’ cogito. Special attention is given to their reception of Montaigne’s critique of human sovereignty. Focussing on the discussion about the animal-human relationship in Descartes and La Fontaine, but also on the latter’s relationship to Madame de Sablière as well as to the period’s court society and salon culture in general, the article’s purpose is to highlight the plurality of early modern subjectivity, and its relevance for current theories of posthumanism and critique of the modern subject.

- In this article, the religious narrative of the Fall charging Hamsun’s Hunger (1890) is related to the motive of creatureliness that figures in the thinking of Walter Benjamin – as an ongoing subjection under the transformations of sovereign power in modernity. In comparison with Rainer Maria Rilke’s The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (1910), it becomes clear that the motive of kenosis – God making himself the likeness of a servant – does not surface on the level of the fable in Hunger the way it does in Rilke. Whereas on the one hand Rilke’s Malte recognizes God in the figure of the stooping, blind newspaper vendor, on the other hand the protagonist in Hunger, desperately fighting to separate himself from fallen creation, finds himself animated by an urge to punish the correspondingly crippled character in the novel. Nevertheless, the article traces a kenotic or “self-emptying” movement even in Hunger, albeit on a performative level: As the negotiations on dignity are played out ad absurdum, the arbitrariness of sovereign power’s exclusion of “unworthy” life is displayed, thus being emptied out or deactivated in a comic register.

Genom att studera äldre självframställningar träder i studien enrad singulära själv fram som samtidigt ter sig historiskt, socialt och politiskt betingade.

- Artikeln tar sin utgångspunkt i tre svenska debatter: om videovåldet (på 1980-talet), om ljudbokens konsekvenser och om gangsterrapen. Samtliga kretsar kring konstens autonomi, men det signifikativa är att autonomin förflyttas till subjekten som förväntas göra de distinktioner som är nödvändiga för att skenet av oberoende ska upprätthållas. Samtidigt finns en spridd uppfattning om att dagens konst ska vara ”berörande”. Detta kan tolkas som ett uttryck för att konst handlar om krafter. Artikeln fördjupar sig därefter i kraft-begreppet, via framförallt Christoph Menke, Bernard Stiegler och Gilles Deleuze. Till sist vänder den sig till ett par samtida litterära exempel för att illustrera kraft-begreppets tillämpbarhet. Den tentativa slutsatsen är att kraft-begreppet idag skulle kunna vara mer adekvat än autonomi-begreppet för att förstå litteraturens relevans.
