  • The (Dys)Functionality of Girls' and Young Women's Violence
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : Sage Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 32:4, s. 543-556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how professionals talk about girls' and young women's use of violence; more specifically, how violence is constructed and conceptualized and its effects on social work practice. The data analyzed consist of focus group sessions with 11 professionals within social and youth work. The findings revealed that violence is conceptualized through interpretative repertoires as social functionality, psychological functionality, or dysfunctionality, which affect the professionals' conceptualizations of violence and social work practice. Accordingly, a multifaceted understanding of violence is needed, otherwise girls' and young women's violent acts risk being diminished and made into an individual problem to solved.

  • Sisterhood at a distance : doing feminist support work online
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : Sage Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 39:2, s. 214-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of feminist peer support in the context of online chat counseling. Based on 15 interviews with female lay supporters associated with a branch of the Swedish women's shelter movement targeting young women, we explore how the digital setting—characterized by distance and anonymity—affects the meaning and doing of feminist support. Our results show that core principles of feminist support—striving for equality and trust, the crafting of safe spaces, and sharing experiences—are all renegotiated and/or accentuated by the digital setting. The chat is experienced as enabling a more equal relationship and a high level of safety. The meaning of safety has largely shifted, however, from being associated with a feminist community to safety associated with solitude and distance. We further show a tension in the respondents’ understanding of shared experiences, stressing both the importance of situated knowledges and the value of not knowing who is seeking or offering support. By combining research and material on feminist support and online youth counseling, the article offers novel perspectives on feminist counseling and social work, the power dimensions of online counseling, and the virtual space as an arena for feminist activism.

  • Casa Rut : A Multilevel Analysis of a “Good Practice” in the Social Assistance of Sexually Trafficked Nigerian Women
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 30:40, s. 546-559
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article depicts the case study of Casa Rut (“Ruth Home”), a shelter for victims of sexual trafficking, who are predominantly Nigerian women. Since 1995, through the implementation of article 18 of the consolidated act on immigration, Casa Rut has offered a program of social assistance and rehabilitation to 340 women, 120 of whom were Nigerian and 41 of whom were pregnant. Data gathered during a two-month internship between 2008 and 2009 are examined in light of the context of the Nigerian sexual trafficking operation and its collusion with the local criminal organization Camorra in the surroundings of the southern Italian city of Caserta.Casa Rut’s interventions are analyzed according to a multilevel perspective and the nature of victims’ case management in order to assess whether this NGO can be considered to represent “good practice” in the fight against sexual trafficking. Hence, the work of the social cooperative NewHope—a tailoring cooperative founded in 2004 by Casa Rut that provides vocational training to formerly trafficked women—is considered in relation to the long-term employment needs of sexual trafficking victims.Human and sexual trafficking has not been extensively investigated within social work, even though practitioners are best positioned to address this issue. This work therefore aims to facilitate social service providers in their everyday activities by presenting multilevel evidence of “good practice” in the fight against the modern day slave trade.

  • The Paradox of a Gender-Balanced Workforce : The Discursive Construction of Gender Among Swedish Social Workers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 28:1, s. 19-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through a study of the narratives and practices in a gender-balanced social worksite, this article identifies institutionalized gender normalization processes. In the tales, the social workers told of their work, they reiterated the value of a gender-balanced workforce, together with the ideal of a gender-neutral profession. This view made it hard for the workers to see the ways in which the gender order they were involved in reproduces a gendered hierarchy in which male social workers are accorded greater value and an increased space of action, while female social workers and femininity are characterized by shortcomings when compared to men. © 2013 SAGE Publications.

  • Representations of Women Subjected to Violence : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Study Guides in Social Work
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 35:1, s. 89-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish government?s efforts to meet the needs of women subjected to violence have intensified since 2007 when it adopted an Action Plan for combating men?s violence against women. The aim of this study was to analyze how women are discursively framed from an intersectional perspective in five of the Action Plan?s study guides. A critical discourse analysis revealed three overall discourses. First, women are divided into various categories, which is likely to lead to an understanding that it is specific groups of women that become victims of violence. Second, women are framed in a heteronormative and a gender-equal context. This neglects nonheterosexual violence and underlines the otherness of ethnically categorized women. Third, the definition of women as agents stresses both their responsibility and their lack of agency. The absence of an intersectional analysis risks an interpretation in social work practice that some social division have a greater impact on violence in some specific groups of women. When women?s individual situation and needs are not taken into account, women risk being given inadequate help and support, which might put victims of violence in danger.

  • A Cry for Care But not Justice : Embodied Vulnerabilities and the Moral Economy of Child Welfare
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 35:2, s. 231-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the pivotal role of the body for political recognition and rights claims in child welfare "moral" interventions. I examine how the bodily figures in child welfare assessments, linking these manifestations to the concept of the moral economy of care. A sample of assessment reports from a Swedish municipality, all addressing violations of children's bodies or integrity, are used as empirical material. I show how the psychosomatically suffering child is being best "heard" as vulnerable. I also argue that such a moral economy of care silences children's accounts of gendered and racial injustices. Furthermore, racialized moral divides are indicated when assessments of different child bodies are considered. A concluding remark points to need for a child welfare moral economy of social justice that responds to structural intersecting injustices in childhoods, including to those of a racialized child welfare and its individualized and symptom-oriented services.

  • Intersectionality as a usful tool: Anti-oppressive social work and critical reflection
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 29:1, s. 8-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces intersectionality as a usable tool for critical reflection, which as a part of the critical social work tradition aims to challenge oppression and inequality. It is argued that in critical reflection, oppression and injustice are often understood in general terms and that oppression and inequalities related to gender, sexuality, class, and race therefore risk being neutralized and undetected. The suggestion is made that by using an intersectional approach, which focuses the interplay and complexity between gender, sexuality, class, and race, critical reflection gets the capacity to keep central power relations in urgent focus.

  • Gendered Activation at the Expense of Gender Equality? : Activation and Gender Equality as Competing Logics in the Swedish Welfare State
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : Sage Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 37:2, s. 279-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to understand how goals of activation and gender equality interact in labor market programs directed towards activating unemployed participants. The study draws on interviews with 28 social workers and managers at four Swedish municipally governed labor market programs typically targeted towards poor, unemployed individuals with little to no attachment to the labor market or social insurance system. Our findings show that activation goals are understood to be clear cut and a dominant logic within the labor market programs. The gender equality goals are understood as fuzzy and subordinate to the activation logic. Our theoretical analysis, based on neo-institutional theory, shows that gendered activation as a hybrid logic is created within the four programs as a means of handling the competing logics of gender equality and activation. Gendered activation may be reasonable on an individual level, where women in long-term unemployment can sustain a higher income through work and become financially independent. In the context of the gender segregated labor market, gendered activation reproduces gendered inequalities when an increasing interest for activation policy among welfare states overshadows claims of gender equality. Furthermore, our study exemplifies the systemic reproduction of racist discourse within social- and labour market policies. Within the logic of gendered activation, migrant women become singled out as specifically problematic for Swedish society to handle when unemployment is given gendered and cultural explanations. Through the logic of gendered activation, gender equality goals become no-matter-what employment rather than employment leading to equal outcomes.

  • Backward, Dumb and Violent Hillbillies? : Rural Geographies and Intersectional Studies on Intimate Partner Violence
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : Sage Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 28:4, s. 350-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban and rural geographies should be further included in feminist intersectional research on intimate partner violence. The article reviews existing research on the challenges facing rural victims of IPV. This research makes visible the specific problems rurality imposes on victims of IPV. However, research on rural IPV risks being misused and subsequently reinforcing othering and stereotypes of rurality and rural inhabitants. The article suggests that researchers alternate between intra- and anti-categorical approaches. On the one hand rural victims of IPV should be analysed as a neglected point of intersection, and on the other the diversity of ruralities should be acknowledged.
