  • Assessment of Digital Image Correlation as a method of obtaining deformations of a structure under fluid load
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Academic Press. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 58, s. 173-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is employed for the measurement of full-field deformation during fluid-structure interaction experiments in a wind tunnel. The methodology developed for the wind tunnel environment is quantitatively assessed. The static deformation error of the system is shown to be less than 0.8% when applied to a curved aerofoil specimen moved through known displacements using a micrometre. Enclosed camera fairings were shown to be required to minimise error due to wind induced camera vibration under aerodynamic loading. The methodology was demonstrated using a high performance curved foil, from a NACRA F20 sailing catamaran, tested within the University of Southampton RJ Mitchell, 3.5. mx2.4. m, wind tunnel. The aerodynamic forces induced in the wind tunnel are relatively small, compared with typical hydrodynamic loading, resulting in small deformations. The coupled deflection and blade twist is evaluated over the tip region (80-100% Span, measured from the root) for a range of wind speeds and angles of attack. Steady deformations at low angles of attack were shown to be well captured however unsteady deformations at higher angles of attack were observed as an increase in variability due to hardware limitations in the current DIC system. It is concluded that higher DIC sample rates are required to assess unsteady deformations in the future. The full field deformation data reveals limited blade twist for low angles of attack, below the stall angle. For larger angles, however, there is a tendency to reduce the effective angle of attack at the tip of the structure, combined with an unsteady structural response. This capability highlights the benefits of the presented methodology over fixed-point measurements as the three dimensional foil deflections can be assessed over a large tip region. In addition, the methodology demonstrates that very small deformations and twist angles can be resolved.

  • Interaction of a rotational motion and an axial flow in small geometries for a Taylor-Couette problem
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 20:5, s. 621-641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the stability of a Taylor-Couette flow under the imposition of a weak axial flow in the case of a very short cylinder with a narrow annulus gap. We consider an incompressible viscous fluid contained in the narrow gap between two concentric short cylinders, in which the inner cylinder rotates with constant angular velocity. The caps of the cylinders have narrow tubes conically tapering to very narrow slits, allowing an axial flow along the surface of the inner cylinder. The approximated solution for the Taylor-Couette flow for short cylinders was found and used for the stability analysis instead of the precise but bulky solution. The sensitivity of the Taylor-Couette flow to small perturbations and to weak axial flow was studied. We demonstrate that perturbations coming from the axial flow cause the propagation of dispersive waves in the Taylor-Couette flow. While in long cylinders the presence of an axial flow leads to the breaking of axial symmetry, in small cylinders it leads to the breaking of mirror symmetry. The coexistence of a rotation and an axial flow requires that, in addition to the energy and the angular momentum of the flow, the helicity must also be studied. The approximated form for the helicity formula in the case of short cylinders was derived. We found that the axial flow stabilizes the Taylor-Couette flow. The supercritical flow includes a rich variety of vortical structures, including a symmetric pair of Taylor vortices, an anomalous single vortex and quasiperiodic oscillating vortices. Pattern formation was studied at large for rated ranges of azimuthal and axial Reynolds numbers. A region where three branches of different states occur was localized. Numerical simulations in 3-D and in the axisymmetrical case of the model flow are presented, which illustrate the instabilities analyzed.

  • Active nozzle control and integrated design optimization of a beam subject to fluid-dynamic forces.
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 13:2, s. 269-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active nozzle control is used to improve the stability of a beam subject to forces induced by fluid flow through attached pipes. The control system has a significant effect on the structural stability, making both flutter and divergence type of instabilities possible. The stability analysis is carried out using a state-variable approach based on a finite element formulation of the structural dynamics. The simultaneous design of the control system and the beam shape minimizing structural mass is performed using numerical optimization. The inclusion of the control system in the optimization gives a considerable reduction of the structural mass but results in an optimal design which is very sensitive to imperfections. Using a simple model of the control system uncertainties, a more robust design is obtained by solving a modified optimization problem. Throughout the study, the theoretical findings are verified by experiments.

  • Active wing flutter suppression using a trailing edge flap
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 16:3, s. 271-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aeroservoelastic behaviour of a thin rectangular wing with a controllable trailing edge flap is investigated. A rather high aspect ratio motivates a numerical model based on linear beam theory for the structural dynamics and strip theory for the unsteady aerodynamic loads. Experimental flutter testing shows good agreement with the numerical stability analysis, and the impact of the trailing edge flap on the dynamics is verified by open-loop testing. The problem of stabilizing the wing utilizing the trailing edge flap is posed, and the design of a fixed-structure feedback controller is performed using numerical optimization. The problem of maximizing closed-loop modal damping with constraints on actuator performance is solved for a sequence of flow speeds and the obtained controller is synthesized using gain scheduling. The fairly large predicted increase in critical speed is experimentally verified with satisfactory accuracy.

  • On the optimal design of pipes conveying fluid.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 12:3, s. 353-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The stability and optimal design of a beam subject to forces induced by fluid flow through attached pipes is investigated. The structure is assumed to have the same dynamics as a fluid-conveying pipe, and the dynamic stability is analysed using a finite element formulation of the linear equation of motion. The optimal design problem of minimizing the structural mass at fixed critical flow speed is solved. The numerical results are compared to experiments with satisfactory agreement, provided that the lower bounds of the beam dimensions are properly chosen. The influence of structural damping on the critical flow speed is significant, and is found to be strongly design-dependent.

  • A nonlinear model of vortex-induced forces on an oscillating cylinder in a fluid flow
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : ACADEMIC PRESS LTD- ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A nonlinear model relating the imposed motion of a circular cylinder, submerged in a fluid flow, to the transverse force coefficient is presented. The nonlinear fluid system, featuring vortex shedding patterns, limit cycle oscillations and synchronisation, is studied both for swept sine and multisine excitation. A nonparametric nonlinear distortion analysis (FAST) is used to distinguish odd from even nonlinear behaviour. The information which is obtained from the nonlinear analysis is explicitly used in constructing a nonlinear model of the polynomial nonlinear state-space (PNLSS) type. The latter results in a reduction of the number of parameters and an increased accuracy compared to the generic modelling approach where typically no such information of the nonlinearity is used. The obtained model is able to accurately simulate time series of the transverse force coefficient over a wide range of the frequency-amplitude plane of imposed cylinder motion. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. • The effect of ground clearance on the aerodynamics of a generic high-speed train
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-8622 .- 0889-9746. ; 95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of ground clearance on the flow around a simplified high-speed train is investigated in this paper. Four clearance heights are studied using IDDES. After a grid independence study, the results of the simulations are validated against experimental data present in the literature. It is found that the drag decreases when reducing the clearance gap from the baseline height to a possibly critical height, while drag remains constant when the clearance is lower than this critical height. The negative lift (downforce) increases with the decreasing of the clearance gap. The flow is particularly influenced by the gap height at the underbody and wake regions, where a lower underbody velocity and a higher wake velocity are observed with lower clearance down to case h2. Therefore, the different topologies of the wake are presented and described. Particular attention is paid to the description of the wake flow and to the position and the formation of the flow mixing region. Specifically, with decreasing clearance, the mix of the tail downwash and underbody flows happen earlier, and the core of the counter-rotating vortices in the wake tends to develop with an increasing height trend. Overall, aerodynamic performance and flow structure descriptions show positive and negative effects when decreasing gap clearances, which should be taken into account for new design strategies.

  • A model of wall pressure correlation for prediction of turbulence-induced vibration
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 20:8, s. 1127-1143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vibration response of a structure excited by a turbulent boundary layer is investigated experimentally and numerically. First, the wall pressure in a high speed acoustic wind tunnel is characterized and the cross-spectral density is approximated using a Corcos model with frequency dependent correlation lengths and a modified Chase model. Both models agree quite well with the measured cross spectrum. Second, based on these turbulence models, the vibration response is predicted and compared to measurements. At lower frequencies both models perform well. In a higher frequency region, however, the vibration response is greatest for length scales that are much longer than the one given by the convection velocity of the turbulence, and in this frequency region only the modified Chase model works effectively.

  • Flow around a porous cylinder subject to continuous suction or blowing
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 19:8, s. 1031-1048
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present experimental investigation the surface pressure distribution, vortex shedding frequency, and the wake flow behind a porous circular cylinder are studied when continuous suction or blowing is applied through the cylinder walls. It is found that even moderate levels of suction/blowing (less than or similar to 5% of the oncoming streamwise velocity) have a large impact on the flow around the cylinder. Suction delays separation contributing to a narrower wake width, and a corresponding reduction of drag, whereas blowing shows the opposite behaviour. Both uniform suction and blowing display unexpected flow features which are analysed in detail. Suction shows a decrease of the turbulence intensity throughout the whole wake when compared with the natural case, whilst blowing only shows an effect up to five diameters downstream of the cylinder. The drag on the cylinder is shown to increase linearly with the blowing rate, whereas for suction there is a drastic decrease at a specific suction rate. This is shown to be an effect of the separation point moving towards the rear part of the cylinder, similar to what happens when transition to turbulence occurs in the boundary layer on a solid cylinder. The suction/blowing rate can empirically be represented by an effective Reynolds number for the solid cylinder, and an analytical expression for this Reynolds number representation is proposed and verified. Flow visualizations expose the complexity of the flow field in the near wake of the cylinder, and image averaging enables the retrieval of quantitative information, such as the vortex formation length.

  • Capturing the experimental behaviour of a point-absorber WEC by simplified numerical models
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0889-9746 .- 1095-8622. ; 99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a wave basin experiment of a direct-driven point-absorber wave energy converter moving in six degrees of freedom. The goal of the work is to study the dynamics and energy absorption of the wave energy converter, and to verify under which conditions numerical models restricted to heave can capture the behaviour of a point-absorber moving in six degrees of freedom. Several regular and irregular long-crested waves and different damping values of the power take-off system have been tested. We collected data in terms of power output, device motion in six degrees of freedom and wave elevation at different points of the wave basin. A single-body numerical model in the frequency domain and a two-body model in the time domain are used in the study. Motion instabilities due to parametric resonance observed during the experiments are discussed and analysis of the buoy motion in terms of the Mathieu instability is also presented. Our results show that the simplified models can reproduce the body dynamics of the studied converter as long as the transverse non-linear instabilities are not excited, which typically is the case in irregular waves. The performance of the more complex time domain model is able to reproduce both the buoy and PTO dynamics, while the simpler frequency domain model can only reproduce the PTO dynamics for specific cases. Finally, we show that the two-body dynamics of the studied wave energy converter affects the power absorption significantly, and that common assumptions in the numerical models, such as stiff mooring line or that the float moves only in heave, may lead to incorrect predictions for certain sea states.
