  • Involvement of relatives in care of the dying in different care cultures : development of a theoretical understanding
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 12:1, s. 45-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prerequisite for the staff to be able to guide relatives through the dying trajectory is that the staff members know what the relative wants and can do. The aim of this study was threefold: (a) to identify and categorize family members' involvement in the care of a dying relative, (b) to develop a theoretical understanding of their involvement, and (c) to discuss the congruence or incongruence between the empirical results and key concepts in Swanson's and Watson's theories of caring. The results show that the relatives' involvement could be classified into three categories: to know, to be, and to do. Good correspondence was found between these three categories and key concepts in Swanson's and Watson's theories of caring.

  • The Nordic Tradition of Caring Science : The Works of Three Theorists
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 28:4, s. 288-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nordic tradition of caring science has had a significant influence on healthcare research, healthcare education and clinical development in the Nordic countries from 1990 to the present. Theoretical contributions from the professors and scientists Katie Eriksson, Kari Martinsen and Karin Dahlberg form the basis for this paper. The tradition has established a paradigm of ethics, ontology and epistemology for the caring science domain. Short introductions present the scientific background of Eriksson, Martinsen, and Dahlberg, and show how interpretive teamwork has led to the formation of an intertwining of the essential qualities of the theories. The synthesis emphasizes caring science as a human science, and views caring as a natural phenomenon where the patient’s world, vulnerability, health, and suffering are primary. In the art and act of caring, relationships and dialogue are essential; they provide parameters where caring becomes visible in its absence.

  • Living as an oldest old in Rio de Janerio : The lived experience told
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 20:4, s. 376-382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This phenomenological-hermeneutic study was an inquiry into the lived experience of 16 very old persons who were living in their own homes. The nursing perspective was Gadow's existential advocacy for nursing practice. The study findings led to the essence of the phenomenon: pragmatic transition to old age, within a restricted 14 future. Heideggerian concepts were applied and the findings were discussed in relation to the guiding theoretical perspective and related literature. Understanding the meaning of being a very old person is fundamental to developing nursing interventions to help people remain independent, with a sense of self-determination, for as long as possible.

  • Nurses' Self-relation - Becoming Theoretically Competent by Implementation of the SAUC model for Confirming Nursing
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : Sage Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 16:3, s. 265-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to acquire an understanding of how nurses' self-relation (view of themselves as nurses) was influenced in connection with implementation of a nursing theory, the sympathy-acceptance-understanding-competence model for confirming nursing. This model was developed by Gustafsson and Pörn. Twenty-two nurses' written statements evaluating mentoring during the six-month implementation process in elder care, were analyzed hermeneutically with the hypothetic-deductive method. An action-theoretic and confirmatory approach was used for facilitating theoretically specified hypotheses. The nurses increased their ability to describe nursing theoretically and gained a foundation of common nursing values. The results provided an understanding of how nurses' self-relation was strengthened by becoming theoretically competent.

  • The EXPAND-Model : A Hermeneutical Application of a Lifeworld-Led Prehospital Emergency Nursing Care
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 34:3, s. 287-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prehospital emergency care is the response to a patient’s life-threatening and critical medical condition out of hospital. Patients experience this as both existential and physical suffering. There is therefore a need to combine medical care and treatment with a caring science approach in order to provide lifeworld-led nursing care. A model for the application of lifeworld-led prehospital emergency nursing care was developed using Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy, bringing together the concepts understanding and explanation. The model comprises the phases of primary understanding, structural explanation, and secondary understanding, which together integrate medical care with a lifeworld perspective on the patient’s illness or injury.

  • Developing a supportive-educative program for patients with advanced heart failure within Orem's general theory of nursing
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 11:2, s. 79-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recovery from heart failure and coping with the effects of this serious condition has a major impact on the self-care demand of patients with heart failure. To prevent potential self-care deficits, education and support are important issues in nursing care. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of a supportive-educative program that is designed to enhance self-care abilities of patients with heart failure. To structure nursing care for these patients and their families in a consistent systematized way, Orem's general theory of nursing is used as a frame of reference.

  • Striving for Balance Between Family and Work Demands Among Iranian Nurses
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 23:2, s. 166-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study reported here explored Iranian nurses' experience of managing work and family roles. Grounded theory method guided the data collection and data analysis from both individual and focus group interviews. Five categories emerged: family role, working conditions, seeking support, perceiving dissatisfaction, and perceiving threats to health. The core concept that emerged was striving for balance between family and work demands. In the work family role the Iranian nurses faced significant pressures, and they mostly relied on their own capabilities to create balance, often neglecting their own needs. This resulted in perceived dissatisfaction and health threats.

  • The Ethical Demand in Nursing A Scandinavian Perspective
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nursing Science Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-3184 .- 1552-7409. ; 22:3, s. 281-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this column the authors discuss the ethics of information exchange in nursing practice with children. Five concepts identified in three Swedish grounded theory studies and a content analysis that used the theoretical framework of ethical demand were analyzed. A simultaneous concept analysis found five related concepts: being interconnected, acting according to accepted procedure, completeness, interdependence, and social intercourse. These concepts are synthesized in the concept of intergrade, which emphasizes the value of maintaining the integrity of all involved in information exchange.
