  • Movement, Violence, and the Making of Home
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Focaal. - : Berghahn Books: Oxford and New York. - 1558-5263. ; 49:1, s. 3-14
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • By giving an extensive literature review and presenting the central objectives of this theme section, this introductory article develops a programmatic call for a critical anthropology of 'home' in relation to violence and place. Challenging assumptions that territoriality, rootedness, and memories of violence are necessarily the primary determinants of identification among people on the move, it proposes conceptual tools to investigate how and when such discourses may provide or prohibit the making of 'home'. In particular, it draws attention to issues of political and economic transformation and the changing forms of violence and movement produced by them.

  • Buy or barter? Illegal yet licit purchases of work in contemporary Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Focaal. - Oxford : Berghahn Books. - 0920-1297 .- 1558-5263. ; 2013:66, s. 75-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the tensions between buying and bartering a ser vice in contemporary Sweden by analyzing the acceptable purchase of svart arbete —informal exchanges of work. It is a commonplace phenomenon, but also widely debated, as it is seen as detrimental to welfare society, eroding taxpaying morals and solidarity with fellow citizens. Settling the svart deal with money makes the links to market and state domains more pertinent. Even cash-settled deals are therefore often referred to as barters to create a reverse disentanglement, away from the formal market and moved closer to the realm of social exchanges. The informants express a verbal creativity in a joking manner. Exploring synonyms and metaphors reveals the informality, but the talk also shows that, as exchanges, they are part of everyday life. The article thus describes how illegal yet licit exchanges of work are articulated.

  • Enemies of the people : Theorizing dispossession and mirroring conspiracy in the Republic of Georgia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Focaal. - : Universiteit Nijmegen. - 0920-1297 .- 1558-5263. ; :74, s. 42-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article connects a specific generational experience of having been dispossessed of former social status and political influence to suspicious theories of conspiracies and hidden connections. Th rough ethnographic cases from Georgia I argue that while acting as an explanatory framework for the personal experience of being economically and politically dispossessed, conspiracy theorizing may also work as an everyday means of reappropriating a morally meaningful social identity through the mirroring of a general form of political rhetoric and power. The theories analyzed in the article draw on socially and culturally recognizable registers and tap into a general atmosphere of suspicion and opacity in which mistrust of official accounts and rhetoric is reasonable and appealing. They thus work as a means of repacking generational and economical marginality into a broader framework that is of concern to the wider community and may be seen to represent an effort of reclaiming a moral high ground and being reinscribed into wider social and national domains.

  • Anthropology and decision making : an introduction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Focaal. Journal of Global and Historical Anthropology. - Nijmegen : Focaal. - 1558-5263 .- 0920-1297. ; :65, s. 97-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This introductory article calls for a critical re-examination of a plethora of phenomena relating to choice and decision-making, occasionally addressed by anthropologists, but more regularly studied by economists, political scientists, psychologists and organization scholars. By means of a bird's eye research overview, we identify certain weak spots pertaining to a formalistic uni-central view of human rationality, and argue that ethnographic approaches casting light on cultural contexts for thought, reason and action can explain how choices are framed and constituted from horizons of perceptions and expectations. A positive account of socially and culturally embedded decision-making heralds a mode of anthropology with a broad, integrating capacity to address public policy and administration and its interactions with everyday experience and practice.
