- Packing items in bins is an old but nevertheless challenging combinatorial problem with numerous applications in industry. We report on an original approach based on constraint programming and rule-based modelling, which has been investigated in the framework of the FP6 ‘specific targeted research project’ Net-WMS (Towards integrating virtual reality and optimization techniques in a new generation of Networked businesses in Warehouse Management Systems under constraints). It has applications in the automotive industry.

- Most industrial software-intensive systems have a very long life span, and undergo many changes after their initial conception. To ensure that they maintain the desired system-level properties, it is essential that their architecture is also updated to reflect the added functionality. To this end, we have investigated how Evolutionary Architecting should be carried out in order to provide a strong basis for a system, not only at conception but throughout its life. The results are concrete and based on empirical findings, and include both a new state-of-the-art process description and a light-weight maturity evaluation method.

- With commodity operating systems failing to establish unbreakable isolation of processes, there is a need for stronger separation mechanisms. A recently launched open source project aims at applying virtualization to achieve such isolation on the widespread embedded ARM architectures. Strong assurance is established by formal verification and common criteria certification. Coexisting guest systems are able to run unmodified on the multicore platform, in a resource and cost efficient manner. The solution is rounded anchored in a secure boot process.
