  • The development and sharing of knowledge by Centres of Excellence and transnational teams : A conceptual framework
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 48:3, s. 319-338
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper develops a conceptual framework addressing the development and sharing of knowledge by Centres of Excellence and transnational teams, which are important organisational mechanisms used by headquarters to manage knowledge processes within multinational corporations. The inherent differences of Centres of Excellence and transnational teams are conceptualised in terms of pre-existing knowledge, practices, interaction and communication. The inherent differences in the organisational mechanisms influence the amount of subsidiary participation and what factors that facilitate and hamper knowledge development and sharing respectively.

  • In search of centre of excellence : Network embeddedness and subsidiaryroles in multinational corporations
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: MIR: Management International Review. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 40:4, s. 329-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the authors explore the role of a subsidiary as a centre of excellencewithin the multinational corporation (MNC). It is argued that such a role can bebased on the characteristics of a subsidiary's internal resources, its relationshipswith the rest of the MNC and the business context of which the subsidiary is apart. Based on the perspective of an MNC as a Network the latter aspect is es-pecially focused. Through an analysis of 98 subsidiaries the importance of thesubsidiary's embeddedness, in terms of business relationships with specific cus-tomers and suppliers for its role as a centre of excellence, is investigated.A conceptual result from this paper is that it offers a framework for analysingthe role of the business context for the subsidiary's role as a centre of excel-lence. Productive relationships with external counterparts in the business envi-ronment can be used by the subsidiary to enhance its role as a centre of excel-lence. An empirical result is that the external embeddedness of the subsidiaryis an important and significant explanatory variable of the subsidiary's possibil-ities to be considered important to the MNC as well as a prerequisite to influ-ence the future behaviour of MNC.

  • Psychic Distance, Innovation, and Firm Performance
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 54:5, s. 581-613
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research suggests that internationalization improves a firm's ability to innovate, but the effect of internationalizing into specific target markets or destinations on the innovation ability of firms has not been fully investigated. This study examined whether the psychic distance between target market and home market affects firms' propensity to innovate. The starting assumption was that perception of a high degree of differences and subsequent environmental uncertainty when expanding into psychically distant markets triggers strategies for interacting and integrating with the market environment. These include producing and adopting innovations to processes and products and to organizational strategy, structure, and administrative procedures to cope with the new environment and overcome uncertainties. These innovations and the associated competitive advantages can improve firm performance. Hypotheses regarding the relationships between psychic distance, innovation, and firm performance were tested here by structural equation modeling using data from 186 export ventures into 23 international markets by Swedish companies. The results indicate that the link between psychic distance and firm performance is mediated by innovation.

  • The Impact of Psychic Distance on Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 53:5, s. 659-686
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to investigate the value of the well-known construct of psychic distance, developed to explain the internationalization path of firms from developed countries, for the internationalization of Chinese firms. Our research question is: Does psychic distance and its individual stimuli (differences in language, religion, culture, economic development, political systems, education, and geographic distance) explain Chinese investments abroad? We test hypotheses on the relation between psychic distance and its stimuli and Chinese outward direct investments with OLS regression analyses. We find that Chinese OFDI indeed is influenced by an aggregate construct of psychic distance and by certain psychic distance stimuli, but not by all; in particular, similarities or differences with regard to language and culture, the level of industrialization and the level of democracy relate to Chinese firms’ internationalization. Our findings suggest that psychic distance and its stimuli cannot be ignored as explanatory factors for Chinese outward FDI but that the explanatory value of these constructs depends on the context of the phenomenon under study. We conclude that it is important to understand how the home country context influences managerial perceptions and thereby patterns of international expansion from different regions.

  • Internationalization of Service Firms and Their Interactions with Socio-Political Actors : Guest Editors' Introduction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: MIR: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 59:4, s. 499-514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Although there is extensive research in the field of services and lately on the internationalization of services, the topic of how service firms interact with society and political organizations, during their internationalization process, remains almost untouched. As an answer to the call for further research on the interaction between service firms, society and policy makers, this paper aims to advance the knowledge by proposing an integrative theoretical view. Dissimilar to the earlier research where each study stands on a specific theoretical discipline (economic, behavioural or political science), the proposed theoretical view asserts the need for an interdisciplinary approach. The integration of these three perspectives is vital since business, policy and society have different legitimacy and dependency grounds and yet their goals and objectives have been converging over the years. Isolating these disciplines from each other is, thus, not very helpful in advancing the knowledge and understanding the conditions, motives and consequences of multinational enterprises in foreign markets. Moreover, the internationalization of services and the extent of heterogeneity in service products/solutions, from banking to retailing and e-commerce, create new challenges that need for interaction between these parties; the three pillars of our society.

  • IPR Law Protection and Enforcement and the Effect on Horizontal Productivity Spillovers from Inward FDI to Domestic Firms : A Meta-analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: MIR: Management International Review. - : Springer Nature. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 61:2, s. 235-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the role of the strength of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) law protection and enforcement in influencing horizontal productivity spillovers from inward FDI to domestic firms in host countries. While most WTO countries adopted strong IPR legislation due to exogenous pressure resulting from the signing of the Trade-Related Aspects of IPR (TRIPS) agreement, public IPR enforcement strength continues to vary significantly between countries. We meta-analyse 49 studies and find that public IPR enforcement strength has a direct positive effect on horizontal productivity spillovers from inward FDI to domestic firms and a negative moderating effect on the relationship between IPR law protection strength and horizontal productivity spillovers from inward FDI to domestic firms.

  • Emerging Market Multinational Family Business Groups and the Use of Family Managers in Foreign Subsidiaries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: MIR: Management International Review. - : Springer Nature. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 61:1, s. 57-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about the internationalization behavior of Emerging Market Family Business Groups (EFBGs) and their strategic usage of family managers in foreign subsidiaries facing uncertainty due to institutional differences. Informed by the resource-based view of the firm and by institutional theory, we hypothesize that family managers are an EFBGs-specific resource used to mitigate institutional uncertainty caused by larger institutional distances occurring between home and host countries. Moreover, family managers are used differently depending on the regional focus of the EFBGs, which further strengthens the critical role that family manager’s play in management and control across the business groups. We employ 5-year panel data on Taiwanese EFBGs, and our results indicate that family managers tend to be assigned by EFBGs with stronger operations outside the home region, and in foreign subsidiaries where strong differences in regulative and cognitive institution may exist. We contribute to the continuing understanding of family ownership in the management of EFBGs, and the research of internationalization of firms on managing foreign subsidiaries.

  • Exploring the Effects of Vertical and Lateral Mechanisms in International Knowledge Transfer Projects
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 51:2, s. 129-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge is critical for creating and sustaining competitive advantage and in today's fast-moving international market firms need to leverage knowledge globally. Therefore, one important question becomes what effect different transfer mechanisms have on transfer success. This study investigates 169 international knowledge transfer projects in multinational corporations focusing on the role of hierarchy, heterarchy and IT in terms of effects on knowledge transfer success, that is, efficiency and effectiveness of the transfer project. We find that the effects of the different integrative and coordinative structures on knowledge transfer success are contradictory. Centralization through headquarters involvement is negatively related to knowledge transfer success in both its dimensions, while previous cooperation between subsidiaries has positive effects on transfer effectiveness, but not on efficiency. The use of IT nurtures knowledge transfer success in both dimensions. This study adds to the knowledge about the effects of vertical and lateral mechanisms on the success of knowledge transfer projects.

  • Headquarters' Influence on Knowledge Transfer Performance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 50:4, s. 471-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates headquarters' value-adding role in knowledge transfer. Transfer performance is considered in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness, and a model that includes headquarters' distribution of decision-making rights, resource allocation, and direct intervention is tested on 141 innovation transfer projects. The findings indicate that headquarters have both positive and negative influences on the efficiency and effectiveness of transfer processes. There is thus a need to consider the inherent trade-offs in the choices made in promoting knowledge transfer.
