  • Fleeing as an Activity of Waiting : Visual Representations of the World’s Refugee Situation on Médecins Sans Frontière Sweden’s Website
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 35:1, s. 310-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article uses social-semiotic methods to explore how the world’s refugee situation is constructed discursively in photographs on the Médecins Sans Frontière (MSF) Sweden website in order to discern what discourses humanitarian aid communication draws upon to frame the world’s refugee situation as being worthy of support. The main conclusion of the study is that the refugee situation is portrayed as an activity of waiting, where forcibly displaced people are restrained from continuing on with their lives. By highlighting personal experiences, the phenomenon of flight is humanised: Refugees are constructed in need of support, and MSF is constructed as actionable and trustworthy. Focus is then drawn to the organisation’s medical knowledge, and potential donors, i.e. the website’s visitors, are invited to become a part of and to engage in the life of the refugees and the work performed by the organisation. Combining different styles of appealing in the imagery draws on discourses of morality, solidarity, ethical and gender equality.

  • Refugee Youth in Sweden Who Arrived as Unaccompanied Minors and Separated Children
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 30:4, s. 530-553
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of children fleeing and/or seeking asylum alone without parents or guardians has been increasing during the last decade worldwide, where Sweden has been receiving the largest number of asylum claims by unaccompanied minors in Europe. Despite the growing interest in the situation of this group in destination countries, there is a lack of research articles that address this group with nationwide comprehensive data. This study examines the labour-market situation of the whole population of the refugee youth who entered Sweden as unaccompanied minors or separated children and were registered during the years 2003-12. We investigate whether this group is in a disadvantageous situation regarding labour-market incorporation compared to their counterparts who arrived with their families due to their specific marginalized and vulnerable position within society. The results show that this group exhibits capacity and resilience in terms of finding employment and willingness to work. The results are discussed with a structural incorporation framework from a reception and integration policy perspective as well as from an immigrant wellbeing and a 'whole-child' approach.

  • Understanding out-mobility and radical-right support as responses to differentiated refugee exposure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press. - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 35:2, s. 1030-1053
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The refugee crisis of 2015 became a major issue of both national and pan-European debate. Behavioral reactions among natives in the form of support for radical-right parties or leaving neighborhoods following influxes of non-Westerners are well documented, but a detailed account of how asylum seekers contribute to these dynamics remains elusive. In this paper, I study how asylum centers and refugees choosing their own residences prompt each of these two behavioral outcomes using register data for the whole of Sweden (2013–2018). The analyses show a divergence depending on the particular type of refugee exposure experienced and the specific behavior under analysis. Only increased radical-right support is observed following the establishment of a new asylum center, whereas greater native out-mobility is found following refugees self-selecting into native-based areas.

  • Stories as lived experience: Narratives in forced migration research
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of refugee studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 20:2, s. 248-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stories are part of everyday life and constitute means for actors to express and negotiate experience. For researchers, they provide a site to examine the meanings people, individually or collectively, ascribe to lived experience. Narratives are not transparent renditions of ‘truth’ but reflect a dynamic interplay between life, experience and story. Placed in their wider socio-political and cultural contexts, stories can provide insights into how forced migrants seek to make sense of displacement and violence, re-establish identity in ruptured life courses and communities, or bear witness to violence and repression. The researcher must pay particular attention to his/her own role in the production of narrative data and the representation of lived experience as text.

  • I stand on my own two feet but need someone who really cares : Social networks and social capital among unaccompanied minors for becoming established in Swedish society
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press. - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 32:3, s. 372-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Settling in a new host country as an unaccompanied minor holds a lot of challenges such as adaptation of new social norms, learning a new language and understanding a new culture. Social networks may foster good conditions for settlement in the host community but little is known about the availability, quality and significance of social networks for unaccompanied minors (UM) in Sweden. The aim of this qualitative grounded-theory situational study was to explore experiences of social networks among UM and the significance of those networks for becoming established in Sweden, based on data from in-depth interviews with 11 young persons. Unaccompanied young persons were broadly found to be involved in three different kinds of networks: professional carers, like-ethnic friends and ‘Swedes’ in general. Networks with professionals (i.e. linking social capital) were perceived as both a secure base and a source of rejection, and could either facilitate or obstruct the establishment. Supporting networks with like-ethnic friends (bonding social capital) proved to be the most available and important resource for becoming established, while access to networks with Swedes (bridging social capital) was in general low but still perceived as important for becoming established, not least for reducing language and cultural barriers.

  • From Roll-Out to Reverse: Understanding Tanzanias Withdrawal from the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 34:3, s. 2699-2719
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article tries to bring some clarity to the dynamics of current Tanzanian politics that led to the sudden withdrawal of the country from the voluntary commitment to be a Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) roll-out country and, through this, an international forerunner in the application of the new comprehensive and multi-stakeholder approach embedded in the `New Way of Working. Specifically, the article will look into the possible underlying factors behind the decision to retreat from the application of the CRRF and highlight the potential implications of this course of action. Finally, in light of the above, the article will discuss lessons learned that could inform the implementation of the CRRF in other roll-out countries and suggest possible ways forward on how to strategically work with durable solutions in Tanzania beyond the option of voluntary repatriation.

  • When 'self-sufficiency' is not sufficient : Refugee integration discourses of US resettlement actors and the offer of refuge
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press. - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 34:3, s. 3113-3130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resettlement in a third country is fundamental in the protection of displaced persons, yet the offer of refuge encompasses more than mere admission into a country. In the US, various resettlement organizations provide arrival services; however, the resettlement programme’s ability to support long-term integration is restricted by an emphasis on economic self-sufficiency. Resettlement practices are shaped by the integration discourses of multiple resettlement actors, a term encompassing expectations, aspirations, and conceptions of ‘ideal’ refugee integration. This article explores the work of resettlement agencies and refugee ‘third sector’ organizations (RTSOs) by examining three organizations in a southeastern US city. Contesting government expectations of rapid ‘self-sufficiency’, RTSOs expand the offer of refuge provided in resettlement. They provide opportunities for social contact between volunteers and refugees and prioritize the formation of community and relationships. However, these organizations also reproduce neoliberal discourses of integration, ultimately constraining possibilities for expanded refugee integration.

  • Is the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire with a Trauma Supplement a Valuable Tool in Screening Refugee Children for Mental Health Problems?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 32:Special issue 1, s. 122-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high number of asylum seekers in Sweden has highlighted the need to develop and evaluate structured assessment tools for children. In this study, we aimed to explore the utility of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) with a trauma supplement of six items for preschool children in routine care. Parents of two- to six-year-olds (N = 61) were asked to complete the questionnaire during the routine health check-up offered to all refugees upon their arrival to Sweden. Focus-group interviews were conducted with the nurses who used the SDQ. The nurses found the SDQ valuable once they established a routine and felt that the SDQ contributed to a more structured and informative conversation about the child’s mental health. The SDQ total difficulties showed good internal consistency (alpha = 0.82). A significant proportion of children scored above the clinical cut-off and SDQ scores correlated significantly with the number of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms measured using the supplement (rho = 0.29). The findings suggest that the SDQ with the trauma supplement is a useful tool in this clinical setting.

  • Information Spotlighting in Americans Decisions Surrounding Refugee Resettlement Policy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 34:3, s. 3131-3163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Violent conflict in the Middle East has forced millions to flee their homes and seek refuge in host nations around the globe. Across three studies, we asked American participants (N similar to 1,500) to consider a refugee-resettlement policy that would bring displaced families from the Middle East into their communities, and tracked the items of information these Americans were interested in seeing during the consideration of their decision. Results suggest that participants who rejected the resettlement policy were especially concerned with security-related information and uninterested in humanitarian-related information, while participants who supported the policy expressed interest in a more balanced ratio of security and humanitarian-related information. We situate these findings within the broader literature on attitude-confirming behaviour (e.g. conformation bias, selective exposure) and discuss how information spotlighting might exacerbate polarization on politically charged issues like refugee policy.

  • Are the problems and motives clear enough? : A study on the placement of unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors at compulsory care institutions in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Refugee Studies. - : Oxford University Press. - 0951-6328 .- 1471-6925. ; 34:2, s. 1675-1694
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (SNBIC) is an independent governmental agency that provides compulsory care for minors with psychosocial problems, criminal behavior, and substance abuse. During recent years, a noticeable number of the youth placed at compulsory care institutions have been asylum-seeking minors who have arrived in Sweden without parents or guardians. This steady increase in placements has raised questions and concerns among the involved actors regarding the motives and needs underlying these placements. This qualitative study investigates the main motives that lead unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors to be placed at SNBIC residential homes and the problems that are to be solved during their placement, according to social workers and SNBIC staff. The study is based on 28 in-depth interviews with social workers and SNBIC staff. Findings indicate clear disagreement between social workers and SNBIC staff with regard to the motives for placing unaccompanied minors at SNBIC homes. Although the social workers and SNBIC staff explain that most of the unaccompanied youth placed at SNBIC homes have some form of criminal behavior or substance abuse, SNBIC staff believe, in some cases, the problem is not sufficiently serious to warrant compulsory care. As these disagreements and misunderstandings between the actors have an impact on their collaboration and, consequently, the situation of the unaccompanied minors, all attempts to reach a consensus on the leading causes for placement and the problems that need to be solved with SNBIC placement would increase security for both the young people and the relevant staff.
