  • Is the Positive Effect of Education on Ethnic Tolerance a Method Artifact? : A Multifactorial Survey Experiment on Social Desirability Bias in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International journal of public opinion research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 35:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educated individuals are believed to be more tolerant towards ethnic minorities-a finding widely inferred from standard survey items. We propose a new approach that helps mitigate the risk of socially desirability bias (SDB), using a multifactorial survey experiment with name-based vignette dimensions. The experiment is strategically inserted into a question about a social dilemma not related to ethnicity. By embedding our experiment into an established survey-the Swedish part of the European Values Survey-we show that individuals with a high level of education are more tolerant towards ethnic minorities, even under a lower risk of SDB. The study strengthens findings in prior research and supports the hypothesis that education can further ethnic tolerance.

  • Asking about Social Circles Improves Election Predictions Even with Many Political Parties
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Opinion Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 34:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, election polls have asked for participants' own voting intentions. In four elections, we previously found that we could improve predictions by asking participants how they thought their social circles would vote. A potential concern is that the social-circle question might predict results less well in elections with larger numbers of political options because it becomes harder to accurately track how social contacts plan to vote. However, we now find that the social-circle question performs better than the own-intention question in predicting two elections with many political parties: The Netherlands' 2017 general election and the Swedish 2018 general election.

  • Gender and Sociotropic Anxiety: Explaining Gender Differences in Anxiety to Social Risks and Threats
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of public opinion research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 28:2, s. 217-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on a multidisciplinary approach to explore the causal links between gender and sociotropic anxiety, this article studies the characteristics and magnitude of gender differences in anxiety to a range of social risks and threats. Specifically, it tests whether gender differences with regard to perceived vulnerability, personality traits, ideology and values, and awareness (political interest and news media exposure) mediate the effect of gender by means of mediational regression analyses. The analysis also includes a test for acquiescence bias. Gender is found to be a significant predictor of an individual’s sociotropic anxiety. Vulnerability, personality traits, ideology and values, and awareness all mediate the effect of gender. A significant effect of gender remains even when all other mediating factors were taken into consideration.

  • Surveys as a social experience: The lingering effects of survey design choices on respondents' survey experience and subsequent optimizing behavior
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of public opinion research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 28:4, s. 534-561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose that the design of earlier survey sections affects respondents’ response strategy to later unrelated questions. We hypothesize that the structure of the survey is socially construed, and when earlier survey design features are respectful of the rules of social conversation, individuals are more likely to optimize their responses later on and express more satisfaction in end-of-survey evaluations. We find evidence supporting these expectations from two experiments, but more research is needed to sort out the causal mechanism responsible for these effects.

  • Opinion Trends on Moral Issues in the United States and the United Kingdom Explained by the Applicability of Generally Accepted Arguments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of public opinion research. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 34:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to a recent theory, public opinion on moral issues will trend toward opinions that are justified by generally acceptable kinds of arguments. Both in the United States and the United Kingdom, generally acceptable kinds of arguments include concerns about harm, violence, fairness, and liberty. The theory therefore predicts that these countries will exhibit similar opinion trends on moral issues. We test this prediction using polling data on 98 issues in the United States and 108 issues in the United Kingdom, with an overlap of 27 issues on which opinions have been polled in both countries. We find that moral opinion trends are well predicted by the applicability of generally acceptable kinds of arguments and that there is a remarkable similarity between opinion trends in the two countries. These findings lend support to the theory that generally acceptable kinds of arguments play a key role in driving opinion dynamics.

  • The bandwagon effect in an online voting experiment with real political organisations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International journal of public opinion research. - : Oxford University Press. - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 33:2, s. 412-421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined through an online experiment how pre-election polls affect voters. The results revealed that votes for the most popular optionin creased on average by 7% when polls were shared with participants, shifting away from both minority options and options with intermediate popularity. This bandwagon effect was consistent across different electoral systems and different political issues. In the experiment, participants voted on the distribution of $1,200 between politically active organisations. This experiment is unique in that it offered a highly controlled environment to study voting and examined voting options that are relevant to participants because of real-world political consequences.

  • Insurance voting in the centre: An experimental approach
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Opinion Research. - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 36:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research suggests that to help their preferred coalition win an election, voters are willing to vote for a political party other than their preferred choice. In this field, voting for smaller parties under proportional representation is an under-studied feature. A crucial factor to estimate the chances for smaller parties is polls. In this study, we analyze the influence of opinion polls on switching vote choice to a smaller party when the party polls are at different levels. Building on an original survey experiment, we elaborate the potential differences in impact on insurance voting for a small party with looser or stronger association with a government alternative. The focus is the 2022 Swedish general election and the three smallest parties in parliament: the Green Party (center-left), the Christian Democrats (right), and the Liberals (center-right). The experiment had nine different conditions where each of these parties was placed at different levels of opinion: below, at, and above the parliamentary threshold, while holding all other factors constant. We find that poll-induced insurance voting is most prevalent for the party with the strongest preference for a government alternative (the Christian Democrats) and least prevalent for the party with a more issue-focused stance (the Greens).

  • Misinformation Detection in the Context of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Evidence From Original Survey Data Collected in 19 Democracies
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Opinion Research. - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 36:3, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It can be difficult for citizens to discern factually accurate information from mis- and disinformation. Particularly in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the omnipresence of counterfactual narratives, propaganda, and partisan content may increase the likelihood that citizensselect and accept mis -or disinformation. To assess citizens’ performance in discerning false statements from factually accurate information on the war, we utilized original survey data across 19 countries (N = 19,037) with soft quotas for age, education, and gender to approximate population characteristics. Our main findings indicate that people perform relatively well in discerning factually accurate information from false statements and that self-perceived media literacy and the need for cognition corresponds with better performance. Stronger pro-Russia views on the war correspond with a lower performance in misinformation detection, whereas anti-Russia attitudes are associated with better evaluations of the statements’ truthfulness. We find little cross-country variation in these patterns. As a key implication, we show that discernment between factually accurate information and mis- or disinformation is driven by both accuracy and partisan motivation and that these effects are similar across most different national contexts.
