  • Ericsson’s Proactive Supply Chain Risk Management-approach After a Serious Supplier Accident
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035. ; 34:5, s. 434-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Supply chain risk management (SCRM) is of growing importance, as the vulnerability of supply chains increases. The main thrust of this article is to describe how Ericsson, after a fire at a sub-supplier, with a huge impact on Ericsson, has implemented a new organization, and new processes and tools for SCRM. The approach described tries to analyze, assess and manage risk sources along the supply chain, partly by working close with suppliers but also by placing formal requirements on them. This explorative study also indicates that insurance companies might be a driving force for improved SCRM, as they now start to understand the vulnerability of modern supply chains. The article concludes with a discussion of risk related to traditional logistics concepts (time, cost, quality, agility and leanness) by arguing that supply chain risks should also be put into the trade-off analysis when evaluating new logistics solutions – not with the purpose to minimize risks, however, but to find the efficient level of risk and prevention.

  • Legal Analysis of a Contract for Advanced Logistics Services
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035. ; 42:7, s. 673-696
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose An advanced 3/4PL-relationship in which the logistics service provider extended normal services by taking ownership of the goods during global distribution, is studied. We describe and analyze the approach to the legal rules a 3/4PL provider and its client company took in their contract, and present some remarks on the extent to which these contract solutions are legally sound. Design/methodology/approach A cross-functional (business law and logistics) approach is applied to a single case study. The main data source is a written contract, complemented by in-depth interviews with the 3/4PL’s managing director. A legal analysis is made from four perspectives of non-mandatory and mandatory commercial legal rules. Findings Issues between the offered service, the legal function and reaction in contracts are pointed out, e.g. doubts regarding the legal risk of sales uncertainty, the ownership of goods, the product liability, the roles as commercial agent and as freight forwarding agent. These kinds of advanced logistics services are not clearly handled, e.g. in the standard-form contracts for freight forwarding. Research limitations/implications The research is limited to one case and to some aspects of Swedish commercial law, but put in an international perspective. It adds a legal perspective to previous studies on 3/4PL contracts, and it contributes to legal research by its analysis of how firms in real life react to law in their contracts. Practical implications Practitioners can get inspiration from an innovative logistics service setup, but also realize what legal challenges to consider when they make their contracts. A tentative approach to aligning logistics’ and lawyers’ work is suggested. Originality/value To combine legal and logistics research, and description/analysis of a 3/4PL case where ownership of the goods is transferred to the service provider.

  • Supply chain risk management strategies in normal and abnormal times: policymakers' role in reducing generic medicine shortages
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 53:2, s. 206-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper links supply chain risk management to medicine supply chains to explore the role ofpolicymakers in employing supply chain risk management strategies (SCRMS) to reduce generic medicineshortages.Design/methodology/approach – Using secondary data supplemented with primary data, the authors mapand compare seven countries’ SCRMS for handling shortage risks in their paracetamol supply chains beforeand during the first two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.Findings – Consistent with recent research, the study finds that policymakers had implemented few SCRMSspecifically for responding to disruptions caused by COVID-19. However, shortages were largely avoided sincemultiple strategies for coping with business-as-usual disruptions had been implemented prior to the pandemic. The authors did find that SCRMS implemented during COVID-19 were not always aligned with thoseimplemented pre-pandemic. The authors also found that policymakers played both direct and indirect roles.Research limitations/implications – Combining longitudinal secondary data with interviews sheds lighton how, regardless of the level of preparedness during normal times, SCRMS can be leveraged to avertshortages in abnormal times. However, the problem is highly complex, which warrants further research.Practical implications – Supply chain professionals and policymakers in the healthcare sector can use thefindings when developing preparedness and response plans.Social implications – The insights developed can help policymakers improve the availability of high-volumegeneric medicines in (ab)normal times.Originality/value – The authors contribute to prior SCRM research in two ways. First, the authorsoperationalize SCRMS in the medicine supply chain context in (ab)normal times, thereby opening avenues forfuture research on SCRM in this context. Second, the authors develop insights on the role policymakers playand how they directly implement and indirectly influence the adoption of SCRMS. Based on the study findings, the authors develop a framework that captures the diverse roles of policymakers in SCRM.

  • Big Data in spare parts supply chains: The potential of using product-in-use data in aftermarket demand planning
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 48:5, s. 524-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore and propose how product-in-use data can be used in, and improve the performance of, the demand planning process for automotive aftermarket services. A literature review and a single-case study investigate the underlying reasons for the demand for spare parts by conducting in-depth interviews, observing actual demand-generating activities, and studying the demand planning process. This study identifies the relevant product-in-use data and divides them into five main categories. We have analysed how product-in-use data is best utilised, in planning spare parts with different attributes, e.g. different life-cycle phases and demand frequencies. Furthermore, we identify eight potentially relevant areas of application of product-in-use data in the demand planning process, and elaborate on their performance effects. This study details the understanding of what impact context has on the potential performance effects of using product-in-use data in aftermarket demand planning. Propositions generate several strands for future research. This study shows the potential impact of using product-in-use data, using eight different types of interventions for spare parts, in the aftermarket demand planning. The literature focuses on single applications of product-in-use data, but would benefit from considering the context of application. This study presents interventions and explores how these enable improved demand planning by analysing usage and effects.

  • Interaction : a new focus for supply chain vs supply chain competition
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 43:7, s. 511-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Although the supply chain (SC) competition concept has emerged during the past decade as the way firms will compete in future, there is scant academic research on actual mechanisms through which such competition can occur. The purpose of this paper is to proposes interaction as the means by which competition between supply chains may be undertaken. Design/methodology/approach - The paper investigates a Swedish logistics center via case study methodology to develop the idea of interaction for SC vs SC competition. Findings - Results suggest that interaction points along organizations' supply chains may present enough breadth to assume a role in determining how SC vs SC competition may be played out in reality. Research limitations/implications - Interaction, as proposed here, implies an emphasis on all points at which supply chains meet to request goods and services, including various points where such supply chains converge, e.g. service providers, original equipment manufacturers, etc. Originality/value - Most studies dealing with competition between supply chains fall short of exploring the link between theory and corresponding practice of this evolving competition mode. Such a link is provided with the use of logistics centers.

  • Nordic research in logistics and supply chain management: an empirical analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035. ; 38:6, s. 452-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this data-based analysis is to report and reflect on the characteristics ofthe academic discipline concerned with logistics and supply chain management (SCM) as it isconducted in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The paperfurther seeks to explain variations in the research field in terms of the demographics, research domainsand methodologies, and publication patterns of the study’s respondents.Design/methodology/approach – An e-mail questionnaire survey was distributed to 353researchers based in the Nordic countries. With 144 answers returned, the response rate was 41 per cent.Findings – The study did not provide a clear picture of a distinct Nordic research paradigm applyingto the study of logistics and SCM. The analysis shows as characteristic of research issues pursued byNordic researchers the focus on supply chains and networks and the use of dyads, chains or networksof organizations as levels of analysis. The use of case study methodology and a highly diversifiedpublication pattern were likewise evident. Most researchers were found to rely heavily on externalresearch funding. Significant differences were also identified for research conducted by researchersholding PhD degrees as compared to research by respondents with lower degrees, for researchersaffiliated with institutions based in the technical sciences in comparison to those in the social sciences, and for institutions according to their varying degrees of experience with research in the field andexternal funding.Research limitations/implications – The research reported here may help individual researchersraise their consciousness about their own research.Originality/value – This is the first empirical study to analyze research paradigms within logisticsand SCM in the Nordic countries. It identifies a number of significant differences in regard to researchpatterns among various categories of researchers and institutions.

  • Operational performance of light electric freight vehicles in the last mile : two Nordic case studies
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 54:2, s. 192-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To assess the introduction and performance of light electric freight vehicles (LEFVs), more specifically cargo cycles in major 3PL organizations in at least two Nordic countries. Design/methodology/approach: Case studies. Interviews. Company data on performance before as well as after the introduction. Study of differing business models as well as operational setups. Findings: The results from the studied cases show that LEFVs can compete with conventional vans in last mile delivery operations of e-commerce parcels. We account for when this might be the case, during which circumstances and why. Research limitations/implications: Inherent limitations of the case study approach, specifically on generalization. Future research to include more public–private partnership and multi-actor approach for scalability. Practical implications: Adding to knowledge on the public sector facilitation necessary to succeed with implementation and identifying cases in which LEFVs might offer efficiency gains over more traditional delivery vehicles. Originality/value: One novelty is the access to detailed data from before the implementation of new vehicles and the data after the implementation. A fair comparison is made possible by the operational structure, area of delivery, number of customers, customer density, type of packages, and to some extent, the number of packages being quite similar. Additionally, we provide data showing how city hubs can allow cargo cycles to work synergistically with delivery vans. This is valuable information for organizations thinking of trying LEFVs in operations as well as municipalities/local authorities that are interested.

  • Urban consolidation centre - a literature review, categorisation, and a future research agenda
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 48:8, s. 745-764
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Urban consolidation centre (UCC) is a popular initiative targeting the challenge of negative environmental and social impacts from freight transports in cities. Despite this, UCC often fails in practice, which indicates a knowledge gap. Furthermore, research within the field can be described as fragmented, transdisciplinary and fast growing. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the field by describing dominant categories and themes within the area, identify gaps in order to propose a future research agenda, and provide insights into the needs of practitioners. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review (SLR) targeting journal articles based on UCCs has been constructed with a supplementary snowball approach. A content analysis was performed to categorise themes in the research on UCCs and to identify research gaps, both within and outside the categories identified. Findings Despite substantial research on UCC, very little research ends up in academic journals. In all, 56 articles address UCC. The most common topics were the role of stakeholders, design of distribution structures and transport resources, environmental and social consideration, and economic considerations. Much focus is directed towards finding optimal solutions and designs for potential initiatives with very little, if any, consideration to financial viability or the management of the UCC initiative. Research limitations/implications This research points out existing gaps in the literature and proposes a future research agenda with UCCs as the focus. For example, although environmental and social arguments are often applied to justify the implementation of UCCs, few studies measure or evaluate their impact. Another important research gap is the economical consideration, both how to generate revenue and how to consider economies of scale. Practical implications The practical contribution of most studies is directed towards municipalities. Few findings are presented in a way to support companies. Additionally, by bridging the gaps related to how stakeholders can collaborate and describe what is happening in a UCC, practitioners can use such information as guidelines. Originality/value The results provide a research agenda for the fragmented research targeting UCCs, supporting the viability of future initiatives.
