  • Inter-organizational management and decision-making
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Systemist. - 0961-8309. ; 28:2, s. 4-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To work against threats and to obtain new possibilities, new forms of inter-organizational collaborations are formed. The management literature deals mainly with one single organization although aspects of collaborative processes are discussed. In this paper problems with inter-organizational management and decision-making are discussed. The conclusion is that some approaches that are successful in single organizations and seem to be promising for inter-organizations need to be further explored, like Warfields laws of complexity, systemic models for management and organizational learning.

  • A method for contextual inquiry: some reflections
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Systemist. - 0961-8309. ; 29:1, s. 32-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is the third in a series which recounts experiences in a project conducted in a newly-created Department of the University of Portsmouth (see also Bednar et al, 2004 and Eglin et al, 2005). A variant of the Strategic Systemic Thinking (SST) Framework (Bednar, 2000) was used to support the 25 staff of the Department to explore possibilities for development in a range of areas of work relating to distance learning. A simplified version of SST was created and developed by the team in order to promote enhanced usability for the particular context of this study. The inception of the project, and progress made over a two year period, are described in the earlier work referred to above. The purpose of this third paper is to evaluate some aspects of the work, to draw some preliminary conclusions about use of the Framework for a purpose such as this, and to record some of the planned and unplanned consequences which have arisen through the project.

  • Educational applications of the SST framework
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Systemist. - 0961-8309. ; 31:1, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is the fourth in a series discussing experiences in applying the Strategic Systemic Thinking (SST) framework. The framework was originally proposed for the purpose of supporting contextual analysis into complex problem spaces as part of information systems analysis. Previous papers have dealt with an application supporting strategic development of work in an academic university department. In this paper, we turn our attention using the framework to support the educational process itself. Four separate applications are described relating to educational practice. The framework has been applied in an educational setting with varying degrees of success, and the authors attempt to draw some conclusions based on these experiences.

  • Not avoiding the question of complexity
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Systemist. - 0961-8309. ; 27:2, s. 60-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper gives an account of progress made in a study commenced during 2004, and previously reported. The theme is contextual analysis in requirements shaping practice. The context is organizational development within a relatively new University department. The Strategic Systemic Thinking Framework is used as the basis for inquiry. The paper outlines the process followed in carrying out the study and draws some preliminary conclusions. Points covered in these conclusions relate to problem ownership, roles of analysts and scalability of investigation.

  • Anticipatory knowledge syntegrity : A way of linking individual and organisational knowledge management
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Systemist. - 0961-8309. ; 25, s. 121-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge Management (KM) is in most cases taken synonymously as Organisational Knowledge Management, i.e. procedures and measures on the organisational level. However, KM is also a matter for each individual knowledge worker in such organisations. Hence, Individual Knowledge Management will likewise be of paramount importance for modern knowledge organisations. Further, Individual and Organisational Knowledge Management have to be integrated into a mutually supporting whole. This integration is here called Anticipatory Knowledge Management and will be achieved by an adjusted form of Team Syntegrity in combination with anticipatory knowledge intensification and continuously co-created web spaces in intelligent networks.

  • An Innovative Systems Approach for Research on Urban Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Systemist. - 0961-8309. ; 23:3, s. 188-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an innovative research on urban risk reduction and climate change adaptation that combines case studies, grounded theory and systems analysis, which could be used as a template for similar intersectoral and interdisciplinary investigations. Such a ‘case studies–grounded theory–systems analysis approach’ permits a grounded theory to be built from case study data, which is viewed and analysed as part of a system that includes causal factors and feedbacks. This is an important advancement of the linear paradigm model commonly used for axial coding, which is one of the data analysis tools of grounded theory. This new approach allows theory to be built not only on any specific situation/system, but also on how this situation/system could be improved (i.e. be positively influenced). Moreover, it allows investigations that cross the traditional boundaries between disciplines and sectors as regards: (a) the methods applied; (b) the research focus; (c) the heterogeneous set of practitioners and experts involved; and (d) the outcomes that are relevant to more than one discipline or sector. In this context, the combined use of interviews, group discussions, walk-through analyses, observations, text reviews, questionnaires, and, importantly, research workshops and ‘hands-on’ practice proved to be an effective means of attaining this.
