  • Strategies for environmental control : a comparison between regulation and centralized control inGermany and reforms leading to decentralized control in Sweden
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 6:1, s. 34-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A theoretical framework for analysing control implementation structures and processes is discussed. The framework is applied to a comparative study of a control strategy implemented in Germany and one implemented in Sweden. The differences between these control strategies are explained. In Germany, legislation was used to combat single-source, measurable emissions. Environmental problems that are identifiable and measurable lend themselves to such detailed legislation. However, this is not the case with newly defined environmental problems such as diffuse emissions. Thus, in Sweden, openly formulated directives were used to combat diffuse, hard-to-measure emissions. This illustrates the recent tendency in Swedish environmental control, which is a change from centralized control through regulation to decentralization of environmental control through reforms.

  • Marketing of electric vehicles
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 10:1, s. 53-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Substituting electric vehicles for traditional ones could reduce local pollution and greenhouse emissions from the transportation system. However, these societal benefits come at high costs to the owner of the EV in terms of price, driving range, availability, loading capacity, speed and acceleration. In addition, the usability of an EV is hampered by the lack of an infrastructure for recharging. Such a product hardly sells itself to potential customers. Besides supportive national policies, skillful marketing is needed to get it accepted and diffused throughout society. This paper outlines a two-phase strategy for the marketing of EVs based on a discussion of current and expected future characteristics of EVs and on a review of research on early adopters.

  • Leaders in sustainable development: how agents of change define the agenda
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 9:5, s. 279-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an overview of the Eighth Annual Greening of Industry Conference, Sustainability: Ways of Knowing/Ways of Acting. Held in Chapel Hill, NC (USA), 14–17 November 1999, the conference featured diverse visions of sustainability and a range of views on which societal actors should play leading roles in setting the sustainability agenda. The conference revealed a dichotomy between corporate and public visions of sustainability: who should define the agenda, who should lead the transition and the degree of change needed to achieve a sustainable society. Presenters at the conference highlighted innovative sustainability actions of corporations, the challenges and successes of collaborative approaches, and the shift in the NGO tactics towards the corporate role in defining the sustainability agenda. A challenge for future Network conferences is how to catalyse fruitful links and mergers among various visions of sustainable development and the leading agents of change. To that end, a research agenda is proposed.

  • Union-Jacking the research agenda. A study of the frontstage and backstage of Business Strategy and the Environment 1992-1998
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. and ERP.. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 9:1, s. 46-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this discussion article is to show some descriptive characteristics of research carried out in environmental management. Thus, it is an invitation for reflection on environment-related research in management. To start this reflection, we use data from Business Strategy and the Environment (BSE) in the years from 1992 to 1998. BSE is a journal that is to a great extent dedicated to research on environment-related management issues. To identify characteristics of environment-related research in management, we utilize data from the frontstage of the journal (published articles and their authors) and from the backstage (references used in these articles). The database includes the titles and authors of 150 articles and their 4297 references. We present descriptive data on key terminology, country origins of the articles, number of references used per article over time, age changes of the stock of references, most cited authors and most cited works. Based on these observations we draw conclusions concerning power structures and formulate research questions that will contribute to a better understanding of the research in strategic environmental management. • Flexible couplings: combining business goals and environmental concern
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Business strategy and the environment. - : John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. - 1099-0836 .- 0964-4733. ; 9:3, s. 163-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses how the natural environment became a business concern in a Swedish multinational manufacturing company. Ideas that were initially external to the organization were internalized and formulated, i.e. translated into guiding principles for environmental change efforts within the organization. External influences (environmental organizations, customers, media) and internal influences (CEO commitment, similar successful projects) were fitted with management tools that the organization already has experience from. Thus, the environmental strategy emerged as a result of a translation process: phenomena in the institutional environment become internalized and matched with existing tools and solutions. The empirical findings presented in the paper show how the translation process results in a business-driven environmental strategy. The environmental strategy is however not static, but the degree of business–environment integration fluctuates over time. The process by which an organization tries to integrate environmental strategies into business strategies is in the paper shown to be a matter of de-coupling and coupling business efficiency and environmental responsibility. The task of management becomes to keep a flexible, not loose, coupling between business efficiency and environmental orientation. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment

  • Towards circular economy : A guiding framework for circular supply chain implementation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - : Wiley. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Closing the loop for resource efficiency is a well-known practice in the industry. Toconcretize the circular economy implementation strategies, closed-loop thinkingrequires innovation and adaptation. Circular supply chains (CSCs) are one of the keyenablers in closing the loop by design or intention for value recovery and profit maxi-mization. CSC is an emerging area, and the view of CSC where forward and reversesupply chain is seamlessly integrated with the overall aim to achieve system-wide cir-cularity is missing in the academic debate. By offering a cross-functional perspectiveof CSC, this paper presents a CSC guiding framework to structure and understandthe underlying complexities and highlight the crucial elements of the CSC implemen-tation. Thus, this framework lays the basis for CSC within the systemic implementa-tion of CE by closing the loop by design or intention. The framework categorizes theCSC into four building blocks, namely, systemic approach, main drivers, levels of deci-sion making, and mechanisms to manage the full loop closure and minimize the inher-ent uncertainties of a complex system. The building blocks of the framework aresynthesized from various streams of supply chain literature and recurring concepts inthe circular economy literature. The CSC framework applicability is illustrated usingtwo industrial cases that are transitioning towards the circular economy.

  • Tracing business and environmental effects of environmental management systems : a study of networking small and medium-sized enterprises using a joint environmental management system
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - : Wiley. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 12:3, s. 163-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Hackefors Industrial District in Sweden, 26 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have formed an environmental network and implemented a joint environmental management system (EMS) according to ISO 14001. Based on interviews with the environmental co-ordinators at these enterprises, the effects on business and environmental efforts and impacts are analysed. It can be concluded that the joint EMS has resulted in better relations with important stakeholders, such as existing and potential customers. For example, three-fifths said that their EMS had made it easier to receive a contract for the sale of products and services. Several environmental improvements have been observed and are presented in the paper, many of which are considered as consequences of the EMSs. Moreover, based on observations during the study, this paper discusses how boundaries and screening affect the connection between EMSs and environmental performance.

  • Can environmentally oriented CEOs and environmentally friendly suppliers boost the growth of small firms?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 29:2, s. 325-334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The core question addressed in the natural resource‐based view (NRBV) of the firm is how to develop and exploit resources beneficial for both the natural environment and firm performance. Due to the resource constraints and increased competition facing small manufacturing firms, achieving this is a challenge for such companies. Building on the NRBV and resource orchestration literatures, we examine the relationship between green purchasing capabilities (GPCs), CEO's environmental orientation(EO), and firm growth. Results from 304 Swedish small manufacturing firms indicate a significant relationship between GPC and growth, and this relationship is positively moderated by the EO of the CEO.

  • Green resource orchestration : A critical appraisal of the use of resource orchestration in environmental management research, and a research agenda for future study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 32:8, s. 5506-5520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resource orchestration (RO) is a strategic management framework that details various processes by which how firms structure, bundle, and leverage resources. This study reviews how RO has been considered in environmental management research. The review highlights some limitations on how RO has been used in studies on environmental management, and it also illustrates a lack of knowledge accumulation in the field. To realize the full potential of RO, the concept of green RO is developed. Green RO (GRO) is defined as a firm's capability to coordinate and manage the structuring of resources and the bundling and leveraging of capabilities to create economicvalue for the company while simultaneously creating environmental benefits. Three main research areas for GRO are described: GRO as an organizational or managerial meta-capability, management of specific GRO processes, and the synchronization ofseveral GRO processes.

  • Sustainable development considerations in supply chains : Firms' relationships with stakeholders in their business sustainability practices—A triangular comparison
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - Oxford : John Wiley & Sons. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 32:4, s. 1885-1899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to investigate focal firms' business sustainability relationships in connection with their stakeholders in supply chain networks. A questionnaire survey was sent to a sample consisting of large Swedish firms, with 107 usable questionnaires returned. The results reveal which stakeholders are of interest for firms in sustainability efforts. The results are compared with earlier findings from Norway and Spain in a triangular approach. The former is a similar country, while the latter is different to Sweden in several ways. In addition, the study uncovers which stakeholders in the supply chain network should be considered. The study also demonstrates how firms can implement business sustainability in their supply chain networks and shows the extent to which different stakeholders are considered in sustainability efforts. The study contributes to sustainability research and stakeholder theory in supply chain networks. Opposite to earlier findings, this study showed only minor influences from national culture and institutions on firms' sustainable business practices in supply chain networks. © 2022 The Authors.
