  • Joint EMS and group certification : a cost-effective route for SMEs to achieve ISO 14001
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Greener Management International. - : Greenleaf Publishing Ltd. - 0966-9671. ; 28, s. 23-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are an important group from an environmental point of view and they also have environmental requirements - including environmental management systems (EMSs) - imposed on them by larger companies. At Hackefors Industrial District in Sweden, 30 SMEs are co-operating on environmental issues; they have formed a network and established a joint EMS in accordance with ISO 14001. This is a unique strategy for the implementation of EMSs by SMEs. In this paper the EMS model used at Hackefors is presented and the resulting cost savings are analysed. Environmental improvements are also discussed briefly. It can be concluded that, by networking and implementing a joint EMS, the SMEs (mostly small and 'micro' enterprises) at Hackefors have established a rational and cost-effective solution that has facilitated both the implementation and maintenance of EMSs. Although the EMSs have only recently been certified, many environmental and commercial improvements have already been observed. Many of the companies have received positive responses from their customers and believe that the EMS improves their ability to obtain contracts relating to sales of products and/or services. Furthermore, the companies at Hackefors believe that having an EMS based on ISO 14001 results in positive commercial and environmental effects.

  • An evaluative framework for conceptual and analytical approaches used in environmental management
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Greener Management International. - 0966-9671. ; 26, s. 109-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last 30 years, a number of new approaches for use in environmental management have been developed for use by decision-makers. This paper presents a framework for comparing these approaches based on various methodological features. These include: nature of the approach, type of decision-maker, overall purpose and object analysed, perspective, investigated dimensions, character of the approach, basis for comparison, system boundaries, type of data, and evaluation of results. Use of the framework is illustrated for four approaches: industrial ecology; design for environment; environmental impact assessment; and environmental accounting. The approaches can be used consecutively, or be complementary, competing, encompassing or overlapping in their applications. The research suggests that there is considerable scope for exploring these relationships between and within approaches. Rather than developing new tools for environmental management, it may now be appropriate to focus on practical integration of existing approaches for different applications.

  • Managing ecological competence - Empirical evidence and theoretical challenges
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Greener Management International. - 0966-9671. ; 3:11, s. 32-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper elaborates on the problem of managing the ecological challenge from a competence point of view. The aim of this paper is to discuss a set of competence areas from a management perspective, which together form the concept of ecological competence. Conceptual reflections about ecological competences establish a first step in specifying descriptions of an ecological learning process and may contribute as an analytical tool for researchers interested in exploring this subject more. Empirical data from Sweden demonstrates learning elements of emerging "ecological spaces".

  • ISO 14001 Certification in BoP Markets: Case Studies in Uruguay
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Greener Management International. - 0966-9671. ; 56, s. 57-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a part of corporate responsibility, environmental certification is becoming an imperative for many corporations throughout the world. Costs for certification and audits and minimal demand from local markets are particularly critical in a base-of-the-yramid (BoP) markets. In spite of a lack in local demand, the studied cases, four local companies in Uruguay choose to invest in EMS certification. This research project aims at identifying motives for certification and perceived effects after the implementation. The motives for investing in an environmental management system are associated with perceived opportunities and threats of restrictions of various sorts. A weak legal context is perceived as a driving force and a limiting factor. A number of key stakeholders, including financial institutes, customers, NGOs, authorities and certifying organizations, are identified as crucial for future corporate sustainable development in BoP markets
