  • Perfluoroalkyl substances in the blood samples from a male population of Sweden

    • Temporal trends of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been determined in the blood samples from several countries globally including a female population in Sweden recently, yet little is known about the time trends in the blood levels of these compounds in Swedish male populations over recent years. In this study, the fourteen target PFASs consisted of four perfluorosulfonates (PFSAs) and ten perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs) in the whole blood samples, collected from 153 Swedish elderly men during the period between 2008 and 2010, were analyzed via ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). As the dominant PFASs contaminants in the blood samples, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) showed the highest geometric mean (GM) at 8.5 ng/mL, ranging from 1.7 to 29 ng/mL, while blood perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) contained the GM of 1.8 ng/mL, ranging from 0.35 to 6.4 ng/mL. Both the levels of these two compounds were lower than those determined in the blood samples of Swedish elderly populations derived from the late 1990s. According to the temporal trend analysis, over the three years, the blood levels of PFOS in Swedish male populations declined 16 % per annum, while those of perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) increased 6.1 % per annum, which were consistent with those reported previously for the populations from other countries.

    • One approach to study the system-wide organization of biochemistry is to use statistical graph theory. In such heavily simplified methods, which disregard most of the dynamic aspects of biochemistry, one is faced with fundamental questions. One such question is how the chemical reaction systems should be reduced to a graph retaining as much functional information as possible from the original reaction system. In these graph representations, should the edges go between substrates and products, or substrates and substrates, or both? Should vertices represent substances or reactions? Different representations encode different information about the reaction system and affect network measures in different ways. This paper investigates which representation reflects the functional organization of the metabolic system in the best way, according to the defined criteria. Four different graph representations of metabolism (three where the vertices are metabolites, one where the vertices are reactions) are evaluated using data from different organisms and databases. The graph representations are evaluated by comparing the overlap between clusters (network modules) and annotated functions, and also by comparing the set of identified currency metabolites with those that other authors have identified using qualitative biological arguments. It is found that a “substance network”, where all metabolites participating in a reaction are connected, is better than others, evaluated with respect to both the functional overlap between modules and functions and to the number and identity of the identified currency metabolites.

  • Sick building syndrome among parents of preschool children in relation to home environment in Chongqing, China

    • The prevalence and risk factors of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms in domestic environments were studied by a questionnaire survey on the home environment. Parents of 5299 3-6 years old children from randomly selected kindergartens in Chongqing, China returned completed questionnaires between December 2010 and April 2011. The prevalence of parents' SBS symptoms (often (every week) compared with never) were: 11.4% for general symptoms, 7.1% for mucosal symptoms and 4.4% for skin symptoms. Multiple logistic regressions were applied controlling for gender and asthma/allergic rhinitis/eczema. Living near a main road or highway was a strong risk factor for general symptoms (adjusted odds ratio, aOR=2.16, P<0.001), skin symptoms (aOR=2.69, P<0.001), and mucosal symptoms (aOR=1.63, P<0.01). Redecoration was a risk factor for general symptoms (aOR=2.00, P<0.001), skin symptoms (aOR=1.66, P<0.01), and mucosal symptoms (aOR=1.66, P<0.05). New furniture was a risk factor for general symptoms (aOR=2.16, P<0.001) and skin symptoms (aOR=1.67, P<0.01). Dampness related problems (mould spot, damp stain, water damage and condensation) were all risk factors for SBS symptoms, as was the presence of cockroaches, rats, and mosquitoes/flies and use of incense. Protective factors include cleaning the child's bedroom every day and frequently exposing bedding to sunshine. In conclusion, adults' SBS symptoms were related to factors of the home environment.

    • This paper focuses on the design of continuous phase-modulated systems and simplified receiver for high-mobility wireless communications. A class of spectrally efficient coded modulation systems is proposed and analyzed in terms of Euclidean distance and spectral efficiency. Moreover, the simplified detector based on mismatched receiver is designed to reduce the detection complexity exponentially for partial response systems. To deal with the fast time-varying channels without channel state information, a class of noncoherent detection algorithms for continuous phase modulation systems is developed to offer near-coherent performance. The proposed system is assessed over both the additive white Gaussian noise and fast-fading channels. Numerical and simulated results show that the proposed system offers not only high spectral efficiency but also near-optimum performance over fast time-varying scenarios.

    • The structural, dynamical, and electronic properties of compressed SrC2 were systematically investigated up to 200 GPa by using ab initio method. Three new phases are obtained by means of evolutionary algorithm. The confirmed most stable structure has C2/c symmetry at zero pressure, which transforms into an orthorhombic Cmcm phase at 4.5 GPa, followed by another orthorhombic Immm phase, which is stabilized at wide pressure range of 21.5-123.5 GPa, and then transformed into MgB2-type phase (space group, P6/mmm). Although SrC2 has similar structural transformation to that of compressed CaC2, SrC2 holds small electron-phonon coupling, which leads to its low superconducting critical temperature (only 1.8 K).

    • Antarctica is an important research region for assessing persistence and long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, XAD-resin passive air sampling was conducted near the Chinese Great Wall Station, Antarctica, during a one-year sampling period in 2009-2010. The air concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were at a very low level, with total PCBs in the range of 26.74-45.08 pg m(-3). PCB profiles were dominated by tetra-PCBs, tri-PCBs and di-PCBs, indicating LRAT was responsible for the pollutants in the Antarctic atmosphere. The sampling site near the Chinese Great Wall Station did not show higher PCB levels than the other sites, suggesting that PCB sources associated with the Great Wall Station were negligible. PCB-11 is a non-Aroclor congener, which has specific sources compared to other Aroclor PCB congeners. PCB-11 was observed in all air samples, with an average concentration of 1.22 pg m(-3). To our knowledge, this study is the first investigation of PCB levels and distribution in the atmosphere around the Chinese Great Wall Station, Antarctica.

    • In order to evaluate the perceived home indoor air quality, as well as sick building syndrome (SBS) in areas with typical arid continental climate such as Urumqi, northwest of China, a cross-sectional study including 4,260 parents of children (1-8 years) was performed by a questionnaire survey in winter season in 2011. The sensation of air dryness (weekly/sometimes) in the last 3 months had the highest proportion of reports by more than half of the parents (57.4 %), followed by perceived stuffy odor (40.6 %), unpleasant odor (27.0 %), tobacco smoke odor (25.5 %), sensation of humid air (17.9 %), pungent odor (11.7 %) and moldy odor (9.5 %), respectively. The prevalence of SBS symptoms in the same time period was 40.4 % for general symptom, 47.7 % for mucosal symptom and 9.5 % for skin symptom, respectively. There were significant associations between perceived odors/sensation of air dryness and SBS symptoms (ORs range 1.39-1.42). Additionally, the OR values increased with an increase of the OH score (P < 0.05). Dampness, the presence of cockroaches and mosquitoes/flies, prenatal exposure to decoration and close to traffic were all risk factors of SBS symptoms. However, frequently putting bedding to sunshine was potentially a protective factor. In conclusion, adults' perceptions of odors and sensation of air dryness are related to SBS symptoms and home environmental factors in Urumqi, China.
