    • Photocatalytic degradation of phenol with sol-gel prepared rare earth doped tin dioxide (SnO2) nanoparticles was reported. Gadolinium doped tin dioxide (SnO2:Gd) nanoparticles were found to absorb higher visible light compared to lanthanum, neodymium and cerium doped materials that were studied in detail. Photocatalytic degradation of phenol under artificial white light and sunlight in the presence of SnO2: Gd nanoparticles was studied with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis (CE), total organic carbon (TOC) measurements and the determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Clear correlations between the results obtained from these multiple measurements were found, and a kinetic pathway for the degradation process was proposed. Within 150 min of solar irradiation, the TOC of a 10 ppm phenol solution in water was reduced by 95%-99%, thus demonstrating that SnO2: Gd nanoparticles are efficient visible light photocatalysts.

  • Estimating REY content of eastern Kentucky coal samples based on their associated ash elements

    • Coal and coal combustion byproducts can be considered as an alternative source of rare earth elements and yttrium (REY). The study of relationships between REY and other main coal properties could have several advantages such as estimating REY content of coal particles and designing beneficial extraction method. In this investigation, inter-correlations between REY content with coal parameters (proximate and ash elements) for a wide range of eastern Kentucky coal samples (708 records) were explored. Results demonstrate that zircon and monazite are the main source of heavy and light rare earth elements (HREE and LREE), respectively. Zr has the highest correlation with Y and Th has the strength relationship with Ce and La. In general, LREE have higher interaction with coal ash content in comparison with HREE. Results indicated that REY can be estimated quite satisfactorily by using their associated elements in coal ash.

  • Effects of europium concentration on luminescent and scintillation performance of Cs0.2Rb0.8Ca1-xEuxBr3 (0 <= x <= 0.08) crystals

    • A series of Cs0.2Rb0.8Ca1-xEuxBr3 (0 <= x <= 0.08) crystals doped with different concentrations of Eu2+ were grown using the Bridgman-Stockbarger method. The work describes the influence of Eu2+ concentration on the luminescent and kinetic properties of Cs0.2Rb0.8Ca1-xEuxBr3 crystals, as well as on their scintillation performance. The maximum in the radioluminescence spectra of these crystals shifts from 439 to 446 nm with increasing europium concentration. The scintillation decay times of Cs0.2Rb0.8Ca1-xEuxBr3 lengthen with the Eu2+ content. The best light output of 33600 photons/MeV is obtained for Cs0.2Rb0.8Ca0.93Eu0.07Br3, and the best energy resolution of 6.9% is found for Cs0.2Rb0.8Ca0.94Eu0.06Br3.

  • Adsorption of yttrium (Y3+) and concentration of rare earth elements from phosphogypsum using chitin and chitin aerogel

    • Chitin powder and chitin-aerogel were prepared from shrimp wastes and used to uptake Y3+ from aqueous solutions and concentrate this rare earth element from phosphogypsum (PG). Chitin aerogel displays a specific surface area of 945 m2/g, while chitin powder is 3.6 m2/g, which largely influences its adsorption ability. Regarding the adsorption in synthetic solutions, the effect of pH on Y3+ removal is strong for chitin powder adsorbent. In contrast, no big pH influence was detected for chitin aerogel. Electrostatic interactions and chelation can highlight the proposed mechanism of Y3+ on chitin adsorbents for the powder and aerogel. Furthermore, in addition to these interactions, pore filling/pore diffusion is the main mechanism of Y3+ removal in the chitin aerogel. Chitin aerogel is efficient in concentrating 8 times the Y3+ from PG, a very complex matrix. The complex chitin aerogel-Y3+ can be a secondary source of rare earth elements for other applications.
