    • Recently, molecular electronics has become increasingly important. By applying the hybrid density functional theory coupled with the Green's function method, the current-voltage characteristics of the molecular junctions composed of gold-porphyrin-gold and gold-copper porphyrin-gold were investigated. The role of the metal coordination effect in organic molecular electron transport was highlighted. Although the thresholds of the bias voltage for both molecules were almost the same, approximately 0.9 V, the metal compound showed a larger increase in current because of the metal-coordination-enhanced molecule-electrode coupling in the frontier molecular orbitals.

    • Salicin-based phenolic glycosides(PGs) are important defensive substances against herbivore feeding and have good bioactivities. In this work, a novel approach for the synthesis of salicin-based PGs has been developed, by which PGs of 2'-O-acetylsalicin(5a), 3'-O-acetylsalicin(5b) and 3'-O-benzoylsalicin(5d) were hemisynthesized. The effects of acylation reagent, solvent and temperature on the regioselective acylation of 2'- or 3'-hydroxyl groups of salicin mediated by dibutyltin oxide were investigated. The optimal conditions under which the best regioselectivity reached for 5a-5d were discovered, respectively. Moreover, a tentative tin-oxygen coordination mechanism was put forward to explain the different regioselectivities shown under different conditions.

  • Enhanced Solar Water Desalination by CuCo2S4-decorated Carbon Foam Derived from Waste Plastics

    • Interfacial solar desalination is an emerging technology for freshwater production, but the finding of novel solar evaporators is still challenging. In the present research, graphitic carbon foam (CF) was synthesized from the upcycling of waste plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste bottles functionalized with carrollite CuCo2S4 as a photothermal layer. Analytical characterization [X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS)] confirms the functionalization of carrollite CuCo2S4 on graphitic carbon foam. The UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis showed an enhanced optical absorption in the UV-Vis-near IR region (>96%) for functionalized CuCo2S4-CF foam compared to carbon foam (67%). The interfacial solar desalination experiment presented a significantly enhanced evaporation rate of 2.4 kg·m−2·h−1 for CuCo2S4-CF compared to that of CF (1.60 kg·m−2·h−1) and that of CuCo2S4 (1.60 kg·m−2·h−1). The obtained results proved that the newly synthesized CuCo2S4-CF from the upcycled plastic into new material for the photothermal desalination process can enhance the practice of a circular economy to produce fresh water.

  • Rapid Purification and Identification of Osteopontin from Human Milk by HPLC Coupled to FT-ICR-MS

    • Milk as a key element for infant nutrition represents the only source of feeding for newborns and infants, breast-feeding milk normally contains several bioactive proteins or peptides useful for the development of the immune system that protects infants from diseases. Osteopontin(OPN) plays a distinct role during the processes of lactation. Some studies on OPN isolated and purified from the human milk via HPLC on SCX and C-4 columns adopted biological mass spectrometry. After digesting the purified OPN sample with trypsin, the typical correlative polypeptide fragments GDSVVYGLR and QNLLAPQTLPSK are identified by FT-ICR-MS. The rapid identification of OPN is assumed to be reasonably well behaving in a standard bottom-up experiment. It shows that nano-spray HPLC combined with FT-ICR-MS and Mascot search can be used as a high efficient method for the identification of purified OPN and its polypeptide fragments. Further study will provide more academic theories of their different modifications and the bioactivity as well.

    • Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) was used to in situ monitor the concentration of alkali elements in combustion environments. Particular efforts were made to optimize the temporally resolved spectra of Na and K elements. Calibration curves were constructed by relating the intensities of the specific lines to the corresponding elemental concentrations. The detection limits of Na and K elements were found to be temperature-dependent. The results indicate that LIBS can be a powerful tool for in situ monitoring Na and K concentrations in combustion environments.

    • Complexes [MCl2 {CH3N (CH2CH2N = (CRR)-R-1)(2))}](3, M = Co, R-1 = H, R-1 = Ph; 4, M = Fe. R-1 = H, R-2 = Ph; 5, M = Co, R-1 = R-2 = Ph) were prepared and characterized by IR spectra and elemental analysis. The combination of each of complexes 3-5 with ethylaluminoxane (EAO), respectively, was found to be moderatety active for ethylene oligornerization to low carbon olefins. The activity of 113 kg oligomers . mol(-1) Co . h(-1) for complex 3(100 mol of EAO, 180 degreesC and 1.8 MPa ethylene) was observed with a selectivity of 93% to C4-10 olefins, of which 96% were linear C4-10 olefins. The catalytic properties of complexes 3-5 were compared with those of analogous P,P-coordinated complexes [MCl2{CH3N(CH2CH2PPh2)(2)}](1, M = Co; 2, M = Fe).

  • Anthracene-based derivatives : Synthesis, photophysical properties and electrochemical properties

    • A series of anthracene-based derivatives, namely, 9-(4-phenyl)anthracene(1), 9-(4-phenylethynyl)-anthracene(2) and 9, 10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene(3), was synthesized by the Suzuki/Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions in good yields. These compounds were fully characterized by X-ray crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence(FL) spectroscopy, as well as density functional theory(DFT) calculations. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the packing structures were influenced by the terminal substitutions. All the compounds exhibited high thermal stability(Td=221—484 °C) and blue emission with a high quantum yield(Ίf =0.20—0.75). As the number of substituents increased, the decomposition temperatures(Td) of these compounds increased in the following order: 1<2<3. Experiments on the photophysical properties revealed that different substituents strongly affected the optical properties. In particular, compound 1b with the electron-withdrawing group(—CHO) exhibited a larger Stokes shift(113 nm) than the other compounds. Investigation of the electrochemical properties of these compounds showed that the HOMO-LUMO energy gaps(Egap) decreased obviously as the degree of conjugation increased.

    • A new amorphous small-molecule material, in which the electron-donating carbazole units are connected to the backbone by flexible side chains, has been synthesized and utilised in the photovoltaic(PV) field. This material exhibits the amorphous feature, higher thermal stability and good film forming ability. The influence of the heat-treatment on the morphology and the performance of PV devices were studied. Eventually, a relatively high photovoltaic conversion efficiency was achieved. At the same time, the PV device displayed an ideal open-circuit voltage(over 1 V) which is very close to the upper limit of its theoretical value.

  • Effects of AlN layer and impurities on optical properties of GaN

    • The effects of the incorporated oxygen and the different buffer layers on the optical properties and surface morphology of GaN were studied. The results show that the decrease of the concentration of the incorporated oxygen has no effect on the surface morphology, but improves the optical properties. While the introduction of the AlN buffer layer makes not only the surface morphology but also the optical properties improve. Both the oxygen contamination from the nitrogen source and the resulted morphology are directly related to the line width of the low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra.
