  • Nuragic pottery from Hala Sultan Tekke: The Cypriot-Sardinian connection
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Egypt and the Levant. - 1015-5104 .- 1813-5145. ; 29, s. 231-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper describes, for the first time, Cypriot evidence of Nuragic tableware from Sardinia discovered at Hala Sultan Tekke. This Late Bronze Age harbour and trade metropolis is situated near modern Larnaca on the southern littoral of Cyprus. The city's exceptional wealth during the Late Bronze Age (1650-1050 BCE) was based on trade and cross-cultural connections with a vast area, including the entire Aegean, Anatolia, the Levant and Egypt. This is exemplified by the enormous amount of imported goods, most of which originated in the Mycenaean sphere of culture. Five handmade and burnished bowls of dark grey fabric with highly lustrous surfaces found at Hala Sultan Tekke were recently identified as imports from Sardinia. The main purpose of this article is to provide primary information about these exceptional finds and to place them in the context of trade between Sardinia and the eastern Mediterranean.

  • The occupational history of the Bronze Age Harbour City of Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Egypt and the Levant. - 1015-5104 .- 1813-5145. ; 29, s. 189-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper is a synthesis of nine seasons of excavations supported by geophysical surveys at the Late Bronze Age harbour city of Hala Sultan Tekke near Larnaca on the southern littoral of Cyprus. Conclusions and hypotheses dealing with the origin, the heydays and the decline of this eastern Mediterranean trade metropolis are presented in addition to a summary of the previous field reports. A summary of the results from excavations in the recently discovered extramural cemetery with numerous rich tombs, offering pits and wells is included. The city’s vast intercultural relationships, which are based on trade, and chronological and terminological issues are particularly considered. Special attention is devoted to the final decades of the life cycle of this city which fall into the period of years of a widespread crisis at the waning Bronze Age, characterised by the ‘Sea Peoples Phenomenon.’

  • Egypt and Kush in Mesopotamian Chronicles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ägypten und Levante. - 1015-5104. ; 31, s. 163-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on African-Mesopotamian relations in general and on how Egypt and Kush (in today’s Sudan) are represented in Mesopotamian chronicles specifically. Mesopotamian chronicles, which belong to a genre that focuses on historiography, contain references to Egypt and Kush in seven different chronicles dating to the Neo-Babylonian period and the Hellenistic period. The results of the study show that Egypt and Kush are not differentiated in the sources; that the references in question deal with military conflicts; and that Egypt appears both in positive and negative terms, thus standing in contrast to the propagandistic genre of Mesopotamian royal inscriptions. Even though Mesopotamian chronicles were primarily a matter for the scholarly elite, these texts provide one piece of the puzzle on how Egypt and Kush were regarded in ancient Mesopotamia.

  • Egyptian hybrid names in cuneiform texts from the first millennium BCE
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ägypten und Levante. - 1015-5104. ; 33, s. 303-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on Egyptian hybrid names, specifically on personal names in cuneiform texts from the first millennium BCE that consist of one Egyptian element (generally the name of an Egyptian deity) and a non-Egyptian element (generally a Semitic phrase). The absence or presence of Egyptian contexts, such as Egyptian ethnonyms and fully Egyptian personal names, is evaluated to determine whether these hybrid names indicate the diffusion of Egyptian cults abroad or the partial integration of Egyptians living in Western Asia. After identifying and presenting 27 attestations from Neo-Assyrian to Parthian times, it is concluded that the name-bearers in question likely consisted of both foreigners who had adopted Egyptian cults and ethnic Egyptians.
