  • GA-based Adaptive Setup Planning with Machine Tool Capability and Availability
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME. - 1047-3025. ; 35, s. 25-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a machine shop, setup planning of a part for more than one available machine is a typical combinatorial optimization problem under certain constraints. Targeting adaptability of setup plans for multiple machines, an across-machine setup planning approach using genetic algorithms is presented in this paper, including (1) gene pool generation, (2) setup plan encoding and fitness evaluation, and (3) optimal setup plan selection through GA operations. The proposed approach is implemented In a GA toolbox, and tested by a sample part. The results demonstrate that this approach is not only applicable to machines with varying configurations, but also adaptive to shop floor schedule changes due to uncertainty.

  • Increasing Adaptability of Assembly Planning and Control with Embedded Decision-Making Capability
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME. - : Society of Manufacturing Engineers. - 1047-3025. ; 37, s. 533-540
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our previous work, a framework and a new methodology for adaptive assembly process planning using function block (FB) concept was introduced. Function blocks are adopted to deal with dynamic job shop assembly floors, where product-mix often in small batches contributes to manufacturing uncertainty, making adaptability an important item on a company's wish list. FB-enabled assembly planning and control enables not only adaptive decision making but effective plan execution. Following our previous work, this paper reports the development of simulating a function block communication network in the Matlab Simulink environment and demonstrating the implementation of the methodology through an example.

  • Two-Stage Hybrid Adaptive Assembly Layout Planning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME. - : Society of Manufacturing Engineers, North American Manufacturing Research Institution. - 1047-3025. ; 38, s. 735-742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The manufacturing environment today is highly turbulent. Hence, the potential to alter factory layout has transformed the layout problem from considering long-term material handling costs to considering essential requirements, such as adaptability and proactive responsiveness to dynamic changes. This is beyond the costs of material handling and machine relocation when reconfiguring the layout. As continuation of the authors’ previous work, this paper proposes to incorporate function block methodology in dealing with the layout issues in the frequently changing environment of job-shop assembly operations so as to increase the autonomy and adaptability of the assembly operations against changes.

  • An Architecture for Distributed Process Planning Using Function Blocks
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME. - : Society of Manufacturing Engineers, North American Manufacturing Research Institution. - 1047-3025. ; 30, s. 613-620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today's machining shop floors, characterized by large variety of products in small batch sizes, require dynamic process planning capabilities that are responsive and adaptive to the rapid changes of production capacity and functionality. To meet the requirement, this research proposes a new methodology for dynamic and distributed process planning. The primary focus of this paper is on the architecture of a new approach using function blocks. The secondary focus is given to the other supporting technologies - machining features and agents. Different from conventional methods, this approach uses a two-layer structure - supervisory planning and operation planning. It is expected that the new architecture can improve the system performance for a dynamic environment.

  • Generic Machining Sequence Generation Using Enriched Machining Features
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME. - : Society of Manufacturing Engineers, North American Manufacturing Research Institution. - 1047-3025. ; 32, s. 55-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The manufacturing processes in today's decentralized manufacturing systems are rather complex, especially at shop floors where highly mixed products in small batch sizes are handled simultaneously. In addition to the fluctuating job shop operations, unpredictable issues like job delay, urgent job insertion, fixture shortage, missing tool, and even machine break-down, are regularly challenging the job shop operations. Targeting the fluctuation, this research proposes a DPP (distributed process planning) approach to generate process plans that are responsive and adaptive to the changes. In this paper, a concept of enriched machining feature is introduced, based on which several rules and algorithms are formulated for generic machining sequence generation. It is expected that the new approach can largely enhance the dynamism of fluctuating job shop operations.
