  • On the “vulnerability” of syntactic domains in Swedish and German
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Language Acquisition. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1048-9223 .- 1532-7817. ; 14:1, s. 31-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thispaper investigates the L2 acquisition of clausal syntax in post-puberty learnersof German and Swedish regarding V2, VP headedness and verb particleconstructions. The learner data are tested against L2 theories according towhich lower structural projections (VP) are acquired before higher functionalprojections (IP, CP), VP syntax is unproblematic (invulnerable), but where grammatical operations related to thetopmost level of syntactic structure (CP) are acquired late (e.g. Platzack’s(2001) vulnerable C-domain). It willbe shown that such theories do not hold water: native speakers of Swedishlearning German and native speakers of German learning Swedish both master V2from early on. At the same time, these learners exhibit a nontargetlike syntaxat lower structural levels: residual VO in the case of the Swedish-L1 learnersof German, and persistent nontarget transitive verb particle constructions inthe German-L1 learners of Swedish. I argue that these findings are bestexplained by assuming full transfer of L1 syntax (e.g. Schwartz & Sprouse 1996).

  • Typological and developmental considerations on specific language impairment in monolingual and bilingual children : A Processability Theory Account
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Language Acquisition. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1048-9223 .- 1532-7817. ; 24:3, s. 265-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article suggests a method to deal with cross-linguistic differences in children with Specific Language Impairment. The differences in vulnerable structures reflect typological properties of the surrounding language (e.g., Leonard 2014a, 2014b). This article adds a developmental perspective to the discussion by interpreting the vulnerable structures through the framework of Processability Theory (PT; Pienemann 1998, 2015) and placing them along a developmental continuum. Studies focusing on production of grammatical structures in children with SLI from 19 different language backgrounds are examined. The results of the analyses suggest that the major grammatical problems in children with SLI belong to the later stages of the PT hierarchy. PT gives an alternative interpretation to earlier accounts by offering a developmental perspective and a metric that allows us to measure both languages in bilingual children.

  • The Acquisition of Neg-V and V-Neg Order in Embedded Clauses in Swedish : A Microparametric Approach
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Language Acquisition. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1048-9223 .- 1532-7817. ; 21:1, s. 45-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the acquisition of embedded verb placement in Swedish children, focusing Neg-V and V-Neg order. It is proposed that a principle of economy of movement creates an overuse of V-Neg order in Swedish children’s embedded clauses and that the extremely low frequency of the target-consistent Neg-V order in child-directed Swedish obstructs children from revising their initial hypothesis about the verb placement in embedded clauses, creating a delay in the acquisition of Neg-V. However, it is also demonstrated that, despite the lack of clear evidence for the Neg-V order in Swedish children’s input, the children distinguish between different types of embedded clauses in the acquisition of Neg-V and V-Neg order already between the age of three and four years, supporting a microparametric approach to language acquisition. Comparing child-directed Swedish to child-directed German, it is further proposed that the presence of clear evidence for verb-final in the input to German children aids error-free acquisition of embedded verb placement in German.

  • Specific Language Impairment in Children: A Comparison of English and Swedish
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Language Acquisition: A Journal of Developmental Linguistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1048-9223. ; 12:3, s. 219-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a cross-linguistic investigation of English-and Swedish-speaking children with specific language impairment (SLI) in an attempt to determine whether Wexler's (1998; 2003) (Extended) Unique Checking Constraint (EUCC) can account for the grammatical profiles of these groups of children. In Study 1, a group of Swedish-speaking preschoolers with SLI showed greater use of finite verb inflections and copula forms than a group of English-speaking preschoolers with SLI, even though the two groups were carefully matched according to both age and severity of language impairment. In Study 2, the same Swedish-speaking children with SLI showed high levels of appropriate verb-second use with finite verbs. However, they were less proficient in this regard than a group of younger typically developing Swedish children with similar mean lengths of utterance. The findings from both studies are generally compatible with predictions based on the EUCC. Issues in need of future investigation are discussed.
