  • Studying narrative-in-action in women with chronic rheumatic conditions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Qualitative health research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 19:8, s. 1154-1161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we aim to sculpt a possible methodology for studying how a good everyday life comes about when living with chronic rheumatic conditions (CRC). Our “how” focus acknowledges a woman with CRC as one member of a diverse population, whereby we question the biomedically based view that she differs from the population. The more frequently asked “what” question colors study designs and results in categories and characteristics regarding what she is able to do and what adaptations she has made in everyday life as a consequence of her disease. Adopting a narrative approach, we ask how a good everyday life comes about, and illustrate this with ethnographic material of the everyday activities of women living with CRC. We conceptualize narrative as embedded in the process of enacting activities. Furthermore, we highlight hermeneutical interpretative processes of how meaning works in the stream of everyday action.

  • The Experience of Younger Adults Following Myocardial Infarction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 23:6, s. 762-772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The hidden suffering among breast cancer patients : A qualitative metasynthesis
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - THOUSAND OAKS : SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; , s. 510-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to review literature on how the lived experience of breast cancer and suffering was described in nursing/caring literature between 1990 and 2000, and to interpret and discuss the result from the perspective of suffering. The frequent reports of changing courses, called by various names, such as transition, transformation, transcendence, and finding meaning, werefound as paths whereby the person regained integrity, balance, and wholeness. When findings were interpreted from the perspective of suffering and an ontological health model, actions, values, and existential concerns were understood as both expedients for alleviating suffering and a sign of the patient's inner struggle.

  • Women's Lived Experiences of Chronic Pain: Faces of Gendered Suffering
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Qualitative health research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 30:5, s. 772-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women are overrepresented in pain rehabilitation. They seem to be more exposed to comorbidity between mental illness and diseases of the musculoskeletal system than men, implying that besides biopsychosocial factors, gender relations and cultural context should be considered. The aim of the study is to understand the lived experience of women with chronic pain from a caring science and gender perspective. Gadamerian philosophical hermeneutics has been used to analyze interviews from 21 women living with chronic pain in Sweden. The hermeneutical process revealed intertwined experiences of overperformance, loneliness, pain, and exhaustion. Women’s experience of an overwhelming life situation and the significance of mutual dependency seem to be central to health and suffering in women with chronic pain. We suggest, contemporary health care to acknowledge women’s health and suffering in relation to their life situation and prevailing gender roles.

  • Unintended consequences of gender equality promotion in Swedish multicultural contraceptive counseling : a discourse analysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 27:10, s. 1518-1528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we explore how reproductive health care providers in Sweden, a country often described as one of the most gender-equal countries in the world, incorporate gender equality ideals in multicultural contraceptive counseling. In the tension between gender equality promotion on one hand and respect for cultural diversity and individualized care on the other, we will demonstrate that values of gender equality were often given priority. This is not necessarily undesirable. Nevertheless, our proposal is that the gender equality ideology may inhibit providers’ ability to think differently about issues at stake in contraceptive counseling, which may negatively influence women’s possibilities to obtain adequate support. At the end of the article, we suggest how health care providers’ reflexivity might be used as a working tool for increased awareness about the taken-for-granted cultural norms that exist in their clinical milieu.

  • The integration of chronic illness self-management
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 22:3, s. 332-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-management is crucial for people living with chronic diseases, but the actual process of integrating self-management has not been explored in depth. In this article, we investigate the integration of self-management into the lives of people with chronic illness. In this longitudinal study, we used an interpretive description approach. Twenty-one individuals were interviewed regularly during the first 3 years after they were diagnosed with a chronic condition. We found self-management integration to be an ongoing process that included four phases: seeking effective self-management strategies, considering costs and benefits, creating routines and plans of action, and negotiating self-management that fits one's life. The participants managed the phases according to their context, e.g., illness experience, life situation, personal beliefs, and social support. Health care providers should therefore facilitate self-management integration by providing support that is adjusted to the person's phase of self-management integration and life context.

  • Parental Perspectives on Family Mealtimes Related to Gastrostomy Tube Feeding in Children
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - Thousand Oaks, CA : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 31:9, s. 1596-1608
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Built on the important functions daily routines serve families and child health, this study aimed to explore parents’ descriptions of mealtimes and food-related challenges when living with a child using a gastrostomy feeding tube. The study was informed by ecocultural theory and based on in-depth interviews combined with stimulated recall. The interviews of 10 parents were inductively analyzed by means of qualitative content analysis. Four main categories comprised the parents’ descriptions: “One situation, different functions,” “On the child’s terms,” “Doing something to me,” and “An unpredictable pattern,” with one overarching theme. The analyses showed that the parents strived to establish mealtimes in line with their cultural context, although they struggled to reach a point of satisfaction. The study highlights the importance of health care professionals to address the medical aspects of caring for a child with a G-tube, but also the potential psychological and social consequences for ordinary family life. © The Author(s) 2021.

  • Contributions of Preventive Social Services in Early Childhood Home Visiting in a Disadvantaged Area of Sweden: The Practice of the Parental Advisor
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - : Sage. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 31:8, s. 1380-1391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early childhood home visiting to improve health and development is commonly delivered by child health care (CHC) whereas home visitors from the social services are rare. We applied a constructivist grounded theory approach to explore the practice and contributions of parental advisors from the preventive social services in a home visiting collaboration with CHC in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area of Sweden. The analysis rendered a conceptual model of a situation-based practice, built on interactive encounters between parents and professionals. It includes strengthening of positive parenting, connecting parents to additional services, early detection of needs and provision of psychosocial support in accordance with each family’s specific situation. Rooted in the training and experience in social work, the practice can be seen as contributory to the delivery of complex support to families through home visiting and could provide input to efforts of improving training of home visitors in different contexts.

  • Gendered portraits of depression in Swedish newspapers
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - Newbury Park, Calif. : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 18:7, s. 962-973
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mass media are influential mediators of information, knowledge, and narratives of health and illness. In this article, we report on an examination of personal accounts of illness as presented in three Swedish newspapers, focusing on the gendered representation of laypersons' experiences of depression. A database search identified all articles mentioning depression during the year 2002. Twenty six articles focusing on personal experiences of depression were then subjected to a qualitative content analysis. We identified four themes: displaying a successful facade, experiencing a cracking facade, losing and regaining control, and explaining the illness. We found both similarities and differences with regard to gendered experiences. The mediated accounts of depression both upheld and challenged traditional gender stereotypes. The women's stories were more detailed, relational, emotionally oriented, and embodied. The portrayal of men was less emotional and expressive, and described a more dramatic onset of depression, reflecting hegemonic patterns of masculinity.
