  • National Human Research Ethics : A Preliminary Comparative Case Study of Germany, Great Britain, Romania, and Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ethics & Behavior. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1050-8422 .- 1532-7019. ; 26:7, s. 586-606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although international research is increasing in volume and importance, there remains a dearth of knowledge on similarities and differences in “national human research ethics” (NHREs), that is, national ethical guidelines (NEGs), Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and research stakeholder’ ethical attitudes and behaviors (EABs). We begin to address this situation by reporting upon our experiences in conducting a multinational study into the mental health of children who had a parent/carer in prison. The study was conducted in 4 countries: Germany, Great Britain, Romania, and Sweden. Data on NHREs were gathered via a questionnaire survey, two ethics-related seminars, and ongoing contact between members of the research consortium. There was correspondence but even more so divergence between countries in the availability of NEGs and IRBs and in researcher’ EABs. Differences in NHREs have implications particularly in terms of harmonization but also for ethical philosophy and practice and for research integrity.

  • Moral stress and coping : Relationship with long-term postitive reactions and PTSD indication in military personnel
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ethics & behavior. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1050-8422 .- 1532-7019. ; 33:8, s. 672-683
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the relationship between moral stress reactions and resulting coping efforts in severely morally challenging situations. Long-term positive reactions and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) indicators following morally challenging situations are also studied. The sample consisted of cadets and officers (n = 332) from Norway and Sweden. Long-term positive reactions were found to be associated with limited moral stress reactions during the challenging episode and frequent use of acceptance and positive reappraisal coping strategies. Long-term high scores on a PTSD indicator scale covaried with high scores on Openness, a strong moral stress reaction, and frequent use of instrumental coping strategies. The main conclusion is that the immediate moral stress reaction and coping strategies following morally challenging situations appear to be related to both positive long-term reactions and to indicators of PTSD.

  • Moral Stress in International Humanitarian Aid and Rescue Operations : A Grounded Theory Study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ethics and behavior. - : Routledge. - 1050-8422 .- 1532-7019. ; 21:1, s. 49-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humanitarian aid professionals frequently encounter situations in which one is conscious of themorally appropriate action but cannot take it because of institutional obstacles. Dilemmas like this are likely to result in a specific kind of stress reaction at the individual level, labeled as moral stress. In our study, 16 individuals working with international humanitarian aid and rescue operations participatedin semistructured interviews, analyzed in accordance with a grounded theory approach. Atheoretical model of ethical decision making from a moral stress perspective was developed. Thepractical implications of the study are discussed.

  • Sheltering in chaos : parents’ experiences when facing moral challenges in childhood cancer care
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ethics and Behavior. - 1050-8422.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Childhood cancers are life-threatening diseases that affect the whole family. During the treatment moral situations might arise. Research on how parents perceive moral challenges in childhood cancer care is sparse. The aim was to explore parents’ main concern, and how they deal with their main concern, when facing moral challenges in childhood cancer care. Data collection included focus group interviews with parents. The data analysis was carried out according to a classical theory and revealed the core category “Sheltering in chaos”. The strategies to handle the main concern included “To bring the child through a life-saving trajectory” by “Balancing control” and “Deliberating of suffering. The consequences included feelings of being “Torn between roles”. “Familiarity” emerged as a facilitating factor to handle moral challenges. The results indicate that parents are torn between different roles, and that the care experience is improved through familiarity with the healthcare professionals. The following findings may inspire new ways of offering moral support to families in childhood cancer care.
