  • Mind the Gap: Unexpected Pitfalls in Doing Classroom Research
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Qualitative Report. - : Nova Southeastern University. - 2160-3715 .- 1052-0147. ; 16:5, s. 1435-1447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inherent in classroom research are the inevitable, and often unanticipated, challenges experienced by researchers. This article moves beyond the main issues highlighted in the literature and identifies some of the problems the authors encountered when conducting two common methodological procedures, classroom observations and stimulated recall interviews (SRIs), as part of our dissertation research investigations. The paper first surveys what the literature describes as the main areas of concern with these two procedures. It then pulls away from these resources to explore actual difficulties we experienced that we believe are inadequately addressed in the literature. Using illustrations from our dissertation projects, we examined several recurring challenges we faced, including participant discomfort with specific types of SRI questions and different forms of participant-researcher interaction during non-participatory classroom observations. For each of these problems, we provide a series of recommendations for researchers who plan to use similar methodological protocols in classroom research.

  • In Search of Themes–Keys to Teaching Qualitative Analysis in Higher Education.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - 1052-0147 .- 2160-3715. ; 24:5, s. 1001-1011
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teaching research methods in psychology involves communicating a number of methods stemming from diverse philosophical traditions. The process of searching for themes is a central part of various qualitative methods of analysis and involves the transformation of coded raw data into a thematic structure. This process has often been briefly described which can create a problem for students who encounter qualitative analysis for the first time. The aim of the present paper is to explore how the process of transforming codes into a thematic structure can be described and communicated through higher education teaching. Literature on research methods and related teaching methods was explored and subsequently related to experiences of teaching and using qualitative methods in research. The essay-writing process was used to develop a language and pedagogical methods for teaching of thematic analysis. The reflective journey started off with concepts such as sorting and using visual tools found in the literature review, and continued with more active concepts such as abstracting and re-organising. I found the illumination of dominating epistemologies in psychological research to be a key element for understanding a more fundamental problem impeding students’ learning processes. The reflective journey ended in a proposition of teaching exercises aimed at encouraging students’ research creativity.

  • Comprehensive Treatment of Women with Postpartum Psychosis across Health Care Systems from Swedish Psychiatrists' Perspectives
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - : Nova Southeastern University. - 1052-0147. ; 16:1, s. 66-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies concerning the psychiatrist’s experiences of treating women with postpartum psychosis (PPP) or how they react to these women are limited in the literature. In this study a qualitative design is used. Data collection includes semi-structured interviews with nine Swedish psychiatrists working in psychiatric hospitals. The audio-taped interviews are transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. The findings consist of the categories: Protection, Treatment, Care, and Reactions. The psychiatrists describe emotions such as compassion, empathy and distress. A conclusion is that the psychiatrists focus on protecting the women from suicide and/or infanticide. Given the degree of stress the psychiatrists can experience caring for high risk challenging patients, health care organizations need to provide support and/or opportunities for peer supervision.

  • (Inter)Active Interviewing in Childhood Research : on children’s identity work in interviews
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - 1052-0147. ; 15:6, s. 1309-1327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seeing identity as work produced in interaction is a starting point in this current study, were analyzing interviews with children living in economic hardship, and how everyday life in economic hardship in one way or another becomes significant for their identity work[DS1] ,  is the main empirical material. This article is intended to illustrate[RC2]  how to 1) combineing James A Holstein and Jaber F Gubrium’s active interview approach with elements from Erving Goffmans frame analysis, and 2) introduceing this approach as a fruitful way of analyzing children’s narratives. Also, by regarding the interview as interaction and thereby acknowledging the respondents’ participation in the research process, I argue that an interactive interview approach has both ethical and analytical advantages that should appeal to qualitative childhood studies.Key words: Interviewing, childhood sociology, interaction, power, frames

  • A Qualitative Analysis of Personal Health Care Challenges Experienced by Iranian Divorcees
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - : NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY. - 1052-0147 .- 2160-3715. ; 27:12, s. 2783-2800
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Divorce, nowadays an increasingly more prevalent life event in Iran, can create poor general health among Iranian women, possibly due to bigger challenges for health-related behaviors. The aim was to explore challenges to achieve health-related behaviors as experienced by divorced Iranian women acting as household-heads. An inductive exploratory design based on qualitative content analysis was utilized. Twenty strategically selected divorced women acting as household-heads in Tehran were interviewed between September 2019 and January 2020. The divorced women experienced individual-centered and social and environmental-centered challenges concerning their health-related behaviors. Lack of competence, lack of personal control, and lack of emotional support were described as individual -centered barriers. Lack of community-based support, lack of financial support, and lack of labor market support were described as social and environmental challenges to health-related behaviors. A wide range of individual, social, and environmental-centered factors hindered divorced women acting as household -heads to engage in health-related behaviors. Therefore, person-centered interventions are necessary alongside efforts to develop appropriate policies and amend protection laws to increase the welfare and health of divorced women acting as household-heads.

  • Linguistic and Ontological Concept Formation: The LION Method
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - : NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIV. - 1052-0147 .- 2160-3715. ; 27:12, s. 2715-2743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Concept formation is a demanding task in social research. A methodological approach (called LION) is presented that emphasizes the clarification of concepts based on linguistic and ontological views. This method originates from a qualitative-pragmatist tradition of studies of work-practices in organizational settings and it is explicitly based on the linguistic turn and the practice turn in social research. It is also based on the articulation of seven conceptualization maxims. Its aim is to bring rigor to the conceptualizing process and clarity to resulting conceptualizations. The method is illustrated through an analysis example from service management. The concepts of "value-in-use" and "value generation" are critically analyzed using linguistically and ontologically oriented questions. The application of the LION method in qualitative research is discussed concerning research question formulation, collection, and analysis of data, review of extant theory, and final articulation of theoretical contribution.

  • Case Study of Persons with Cancer Participating in a Community-Based Exercise Program: An Exploration of Meaning and Change
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - 2160-3715 .- 1052-0147. ; 21:8, s. 1409-1424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasingly, research supports the importance of incorporating exercise into the cancer care paradigm. While quantitative studies have substantiated the significant effects of exercise on physical functioning, the individual's perspective of participating in an exercise program has rarely been considered. The purpose of this study was to explain the impact of a community based exercise program on the lives of persons with cancer and their caregivers. Based on Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, a single explanatory case study with multiple embedded units of analyses was conducted. Interviews were conducted with 10 individuals representing participants with cancer, their caregivers, and health care providers. Data were analyzed using Yin's case study method. Four themes emerged ( Sense of Community, Building Relationships, Bridging the Gap, and Living Life Abundantly), which identified the unique characteristics of this community based exercise program. Incorporation of these characteristics into program planning may benefit other communities that aspire to offer a similar program to improve patient outcomes and enhance quality of life.

  • Qualitative Research on ‘Mediated Dialogism’ Among Nordic Project Educators
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - 1052-0147. ; 9:2, s. 280-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relevance of qualitative research to virtual practices rests on subject knowledge and practical know-how on operations for exchange, growth, learning, and dialogue. Highlighting the discursive perspective, this paper covers theory on emerging didactics for online learning. In doing so, the contents show how computer-mediated learning incorporates a dialogical orientation. There is an empirical account of experiences of applying the theory in a comprehensive Nordic network with an aspect of computer-mediated theory focused on Ba, a construct illustrating how educators and pupils keep their higher mental operations creative in the process of critiquing and applying knowledge in English as a foreign language. The paper explores the social nature of learning, emphasising the dialogical perspective, weaving methodological consistencies, and principles and theoretical positions with recent conceptual elaborations that focus on knowledge creation in emerging realities. Ideas about action learning provide an overview of issues particular to research on virtual discursive interaction.

  • Exploring the Experience of Healthcare-Related Epistemic Injustice among People with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Report. - : Nova Southeastern University. - 1052-0147. ; 29:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic, disabling yet clinically “contested” condition, previously theorised through a lens of epistemic injustice. Phenomena conceptually close to epistemic injustice, including stigma, are known to have deleterious consequences on a person’s health and life-world. Yet, no known primary studies have explored how people with ME/CFS experience healthcare through a lens of epistemic injustice, whilst a dearth of research explicitly exploring healthcare-related injustice from a patient perspective has been noted. This qualitative study seeks to address this gap. Semi-structured interviews and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) were used to explore the experiences of five people with ME/CFS in the UK, vis-à-vis healthcare-related epistemic injustice. One superordinate theme is presented, “Being de-centred in patient-centred care,” alongside two sub-themes: “Struggling for epistemic-existential validation” and “Negotiating socio-epistemic hierarchies, politics and ‘power’.” Findings suggest that healthcare-related epistemic injustice may differentially impact according to the patient’s social positionality (here, notably gender), and that a potential pathway of existential harm operates through threats to identity and personhood. Findings also indicate that cultural and political factors may further epistemic injustice in healthcare. Finally, epistemic injustice impacting as a chronic stressor cannot be ruled out and is worthy of further research. The experience of healthcare-related epistemic injustice can carry far-reaching yet varied consequences for patients. Future research should consider drawing upon more socio-demographically diverse samples and an intersectional approach is recommended. Further exploration of structural drivers of epistemic injustice may highlight a need for politically and socio-culturally cognisant clinical approaches.

  • Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis from a Realist Perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Qualitative Report. - 1052-0147. ; 21:3, s. 558-570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article presents how a study that investigated the acquisition of second language academic literacy skills practised the qualitative methodology, interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), from a realist perspective. We share the rationale behind the methodological decisions made in the study, which is followed by a detailed description of the methodological practice. In addition, the evaluation of the study against the realist criteria is reported, and some implications of using IPA based on realism for educational research are discussed. Overall, we suggest that IPA practice from a realist perspective helps go beyond postmodernism paradigms that seems to exert considerable influence on qualitative research in education. Keywords: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), Realist Paradigm, Against Postmodernism, Qualitative Research in Education, English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
