  • Prostate Cancer and the Emotionology of Masculinity : Joking, Intellectualization, and the Reconstruction of Gender
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : Sage Publications. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 31:3, s. 500-518
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article builds on data gathered through focus group interviews with Swedish mentreated for prostate cancer. First, we aim to analyse how the participants talk about andhandle sensitive issues and common side effects. Second, we investigate how theparticipants’ feelings about their disease affect or interfere with their understanding ofmasculinity. The findings illustrate how participants partly break with historical ex-pectations of men as emotionally inexpressive. Instead, in the groups they talk openlyabout incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and other sensitive issues. At the same time, these discussions can be positioned within certain discursive coping strategies. Usingjokes and intellectualizing their health narratives, combined with a problematizationand partial redefinition of gender and masculinity, most of the men adapt to their newlife situation. The men’s ways of handling their emotions can be situated in the interfacebetween discursive and gendered emotion ideologies, and lived experiences ofmasculinity.

  • The Health Guru : Masculinity and Fitness Coaching in the Blogosphere
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : Men's Studies Press, LLC. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 21:3, s. 277-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through a close study of blogs, where male fitness experts share their expertise, this article analyses how masculinity are framed within the Internet-mediated context of the fitness culture. This is done against the background of Connell's theory of masculinity, and recent critiques of the concept of hegemony. Through an in-depth analysis of three blogs, we get a complex and contradictory image of the different forms of masculinity portrayed in these blogs and in fitness culture at large. The texts and imagery on the blogs clearly exceeds the criteria/limits of traits and norms traditionally considered male or female. In doing so, the may contribute to an increased acceptance for, for example, gay identities and other submissive masculinities.

  • Rethinking male peer support theory : Social network responses to young men’s violence against women
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 30:2, s. 291-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Male Peer Support Theory (MPST) is one of the few principal theories about masculinity and men’s violence against women. The theory foregrounds the role of social networks in encouraging violence. This article offers a critical discussion of MPST, particularly the assumption that social networks primarily support violence. Drawing on a qualitative study of young men perpetrators in Sweden, we suggest that the concept of response is better suited than support in capturing the diversity of social network responses to violence. In our data, there were few stories about unmitigated pro-abuse support. Instead, we found responses that unequivocally condemned violence, as well as ambiguous and transformative responses. We suggest that such responses be understood in relation to changing attitudes concerning violence.

  • “Something You Just Don’t Talk About”: An Analysis of Teenage Boys’ Experiences of Non-Consensual Sexting in Lower Secondary School
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 30:2, s. 155-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current study explores Swedish teenage boys’ exposure to non-consensual sexting, drawing on interviews with ninth-grade students, age 14 to 15years, in a lower secondary school in northern Sweden. The results reveal that boys are exposed to unsolicited “dick pics,” unsolicited “female nudes” and non-consensual “explicit video” sharing via the social media platform Snapchat. However, traditional notions of heteronormativity and heterosexual masculinity prevented boys from talking about, understanding and handling experiences that may be identified as digital sexual harassment. Additionally, because of traditional gendered perceptions, students had difficulty categorizing victims and perpetrators of sexting. The study shows that there is a link between male vulnerability and male loneliness that can be manifested in both an individual and collective sense.

  • The #MeToo-movement : Men and masculinity in Swedish news media
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : Sage Publications. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 29:1, s. 8-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses the coverage of the #MeToo movement in Swedish news media. The aim of the study was to explore how men and masculinity were represented. The results showed that masculinity was associated with violence, harassment, and a culture of abuse, as well as with progressive ideas of a “new man” that is both strong and gentle at the same time. The article discusses how the represented masculinities might be problematic in relation to the #MeToo movement’s ambition to reform a sexist society because of the stereotypical and gender-dualistic tendencies that permeate the material and the tendencies to individualize the represented assaults and perpetrators.

  • Just a Joke? The Thin Line between Teasing, Harassment and Violence among Teenage Boys in Lower Secondary School
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 29:2, s. 177-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article, addresses and discusses thin line between teasing, and violence in lower secondary school. The main aim of the study is to highlight and explore different types of “joking cultures” and lad cultures. This study draws from interviews with ninth grade students conducted at three schools in various geographic locations in Sweden. The results indicate that jokes and fighting for “fun” are recurrent in everyday school life and part of how boys conform in masculinity and homosocial relations. As part of conforming masculinity, boys are not expected to show pain and are expected to take part in homophobic teasing.

  • A momentary lapse of identity and control : straddling male collaborations with professional instruments
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : Men's Studies Press, LLC. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 17:2, s. 129-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the tragic accidents that occurred in Montana and in Colorado where a total of 27 fire fighters lost their lives. While the encompassing interest concerns men operating in male dominated working sites and how homosociality is contingent on artifactual utility, the article specifically discloses the organizational dynamics found among the perished fire fighters and the homosocial practices that may have contributed to the tragic outcomes of these disasters. Not only does homosociality embrace dominance, competitive activities and friendship; it also includes material aspects, which is why the study allocates an understanding of the intimacy between artifacts and performances of masculinity. A theoretical aim of this study advocates collaborative practices between masculinity studies and actor-network theory (ANT). In order to disclose how materiality fosters demonstrations of masculinity and homosocial performances, this article draws on the previously mentioned disasters in the U.S. Additionally interviews with retired fire fighters in a Swedish town provide supplementary sources of information.

  • Hegemonic masculinity and pornography - young people's attitudes toward and relations to pornography
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of men's studies. - 1060-8265. ; 15:1, s. 57-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores young people’s attitudes toward pornographic material. How do young people in general relate to and view pornography? Are there any clear gender differences? On the basis of empirical results from an extensive Swedish survey study, we discuss and analyze how gender differences are articulated. We are specifically interested in what kinds of attitudes young men and young women develop. A common conception of gender and the consumption of pornography is that men and boys are generally the consumers, whereas women dislike pornography. Results from the present study partly support these claims. However, we argue that it is important to analyze differences within the categories “men” and “women.” Here, we find that many young men are actually hold negative attitudes toward pornography, whereas some young women are positively disposed toward and enjoy pornography. These findings are discussed within the framework of gender theory and theories of masculinity.
