  • “Everybody’s Different”: A Primary Prevention Program Among Fifth Grade School Children
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders: The journal of Treatment and Prevention. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 13:3, s. 245-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy and effectiveness of the primary prevention program “Everybody’s Different” among fifth grade school children. Pre and post measurements were made in both the intervention and control groups regarding body image, weight concern, emotional well-being, attitudes and behaviors associated with disordered eating, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. The study did not result in any significant improvements regarding self-esteem, eating attitudes, or body image. The prevention program does not seem to be effective for children in grade five in its present form. Further research on and development of primary prevention programs is needed.

  • Longitudinal experiences and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic among people with past or current eating disorders in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 30:6, s. 602-617
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study aimed to document the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and well-being of individuals with past and current eating disorders (ED) in Sweden. We re-contacted participants with a known lifetime history of ED from two previous Swedish studies. Participants completed an online survey about health and functioning at baseline early in the pandemic (Wave 1 ca May/June 2020; N= 982) and six months later (Wave 2 Dec/Jan 2020/21; N= 646). Three important patterns emerged: 1) higher current ED symptoms were associated with greater anxiety, worry, and pandemic-related ED symptom increase; 2) patterns were fairly stable across time, although a concerning percentage (23%) who were symptom-free at Wave 1 reported the re-emergence of symptoms at Wave 2; and 3) only a minority of participants (<50%) with a current ED were in treatment, and of those in treatment, many reported fewer treatment sessions and decreased quality of care. The COVID-19 pandemic appears to pose serious health challenges for individuals with an ED, whether currently symptomatic or in remission. We encourage health service providers and patient advocates to be alert to the needs of individuals with ED and to take active measures to ensure access to appropriate evidence-based care both during and following the pandemic.

  • Male experiences of life after recovery from an eating disorder
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - Oxfordshire, United Kingdom : Taylor & Francis. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 20:5, s. 460-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to describe how former male patients perceive life after recovery from an eating disorder. A qualitative method with a phenomenographic approach was used to identify ways of experiencing recovery. Two descriptive categories were developed: body acceptance and self-worth. Six conceptions describe how recovered patients now relate in a balanced way to exercise and food, using strategies to avoid relapse. With a sense of self-acceptance and autonomy, they now appreciate their social life. Some perceive recovery as coping with remaining impulses to diet or exercise. Others experience themselves as totally free from the eating disorder.

  • Effects of Parental Relations and Upbringing in Troubled Adolescent Eating Behaviors
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - : Routledge. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 19:5, s. 403-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Family relations may constitute a risk for developing eating problems. Not enough is known about parent-child relationship quality and upbringing in food situations. Self-report data from 80 high school students (45 males) showed that females had more eating problems than males, and their problems were related both to insecure mother attachment, controlling for body/weight dissatisfaction, and to more memories of childhood food rules. Secure mother attachment was related to decreased eating problems, via increasing body/weight satisfaction. Especially the mother- daughter relationship seems to affect adolescent girls' eating habits and can either protect against or enhance the risk for eating problems.

  • Drop-In Access to Specialist Services for Eating Disorders : A Qualitative Study of Patient Experiences
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 22:4, s. 279-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lack of patient motivation and dropout are common problems in the treatment of eating disorders. The present study explored patient experiences with open access to specialist eating disorder services through a drop-in program aiming to enable early identification of eating disorders, address motivational problems, and strengthen the therapeutic alliance. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were used to explore the experiences of 11 individuals attending the program. Results suggest that drop-in access may strengthen the therapeutic alliance, motivate engagement in treatment, and reduce dropout. Strengths and weaknesses of the program are discussed and the need for more systematic research is elaborated.

  • Parental caregiver burden and recovery of adolescent anorexia nervosa after multi-family therapy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - : Routledge. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; :5, s. 463-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated whether parental caregiving burden changed during adjunct multi-family therapy of adolescent anorexia nervosa and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) and whether caregiver burden at baseline and changes in caregiver burden during treatment were associated with treatment outcome.Twenty-four females, 13 to 16 years old, and their parents, participated in the study. Caregiver burden was measured with the Eating Disorders Symptom Impact Scale, by mothers (n = 23) and fathers (n = 22). Treatment outcome was measured by adolescent body mass index, level of global functioning and self-rated eating disorder symptoms by the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire 4.0.All patient outcomes improved and overall caregiver burden decreased significantly during treatment. When broken down in aspects of caregiver burden the decrease in parental perceived isolation, was found to be associated with improvement of BMI and Children's Global Assessment Scale. When analyzing fathers and mothers separately, we found that maternal feelings of guilt and paternal perceived burden of dysregulated behaviors at base-line were correlated to treatment outcome. Future studies are needed to clarify the role of caregiver burden as a potential mediator of treatment results.

  • Multi-family therapy in anorexia nervosa : a qualitative study of parental experiences
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 24:2, s. 186-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This qualitative study from northern Sweden investigated experiences of multi-family therapy (MFT) in 12 parents of children with anorexia nervosa (AN). The main reported benefit was the opportunity to talk to others in a similar situation, thereby sharing experiences and struggles. MFT resulted in new perspectives and insights that improved family dynamics and enabled new constructive behaviors. In conclusion, MFT seems to be a useful therapeutic modality in the treatment of AN in a northern European setting.

  • The possible selves of women with Anorexia nervosa
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Eating Disorders. - : Routledge. - 1064-0266 .- 1532-530X. ; 20:4, s. 288-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adopting the construct of possible selves, which are conceptions of our selves in future situations, the objective of this study was to investigate how anorexia patients differ from a non-clinical control group in their conceptions of the future on qualitative con- tent, and the four quantitative dimensions positive and negative emotional valence, and beliefs about probability and controllabil- ity. The Possible Selves Statements Test was employed. Participants presented 14 possible selves by completing the question “I can see myself . . .” and rating each possible self on the 4 dimensions. The patients reported a larger number of negative possible selves, with higher negative valence, often seeing future everyday situations as negative, whereas the control group saw similar situations as pos- itive. The anorexia patients also reported negative possible selves with high controllability and high probability in relation to such situations and in some cases rated recovery from anorexia with a negative valence. Clinical implications are discussed.
